In a recent letter to Catholic Missions In Canada, Fr. Joseph Uy and the fundraising committee of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception shared their gratitude for support toward the parish’s roof restoration campaign.

For generations, the Cathedral has stood as a place of prayer, worship, and community life in Grand Falls-Windsor. Through the generosity of donors, CMIC is honoured to help preserve this important sacred space for future generations.

A quick look inside the Northern Store in Behchokǫ̀, NT gives some perspective on the cost of everyday life in Canada’s North.

Catholic Missions In Canada supports missionary sustenance in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mackenzie-Fort Smith, where priests serve communities across great distances while also navigating the higher cost of living that comes with life in remote northern regions.

We join in celebrating the appointment of Fr. Roch Martin as the new bishop of the Diocese of Timmins. Please join us in praying for Bishop-elect Martin as he prepares to begin this new ministry, and in giving thanks for the years of faithful service offered by Bishop Serge Poitras.

Catholic Missions In Canada has been honoured to support the Diocese of Timmins through projects including repairs at the Diocesan Centre, helping strengthen the ongoing mission and pastoral life of the local Church.

Today, the Church in Canada celebrates the feast day of Saint François de Laval, the first Bishop of Quebec and one of the great missionary figures in Canadian history.

At a time when the Church was still taking root in New France, he travelled long distances to visit remote communities, form priests, care for the poor, and strengthen the faith among the people entrusted to him. His life reminds us that the Church in Canada was built through missionary perseverance, sacrifice, and trust in God.

That same missionary spirit continues today across Canada’s home missions, where priests, religious, and lay leaders serve communities separated by vast distances and difficult conditions.

St. Gabriel’s Mission in St. Brendan’s, Newfoundland, is located on an island in Bonavista Bay. Reaching the community means taking a one-hour ferry from Burnside. For those who live there, this is part of everyday life.

This mission serves a small fishing community where the church remains a place of gathering and support. There is no resident priest, so access to the sacraments depends on visiting clergy and the rhythm of travel across the diocese.

Through your support, Catholic Missions In Canada helps cover essential operating costs that keep this mission active and present in the life of the community.

On April 30, the Church in Canada celebrates Saint Marie of the Incarnation, a missionary, educator, and one of the founders of the Church in New France.

Born in France, she left everything behind to come to Quebec in 1639, where she helped establish a monastery and a school for Indigenous and French girls. Her life was marked by deep prayer and tireless work, serving both the spiritual and practical needs of the people around her.

She learned Indigenous languages, created catechisms, and welcomed all who came to her door. Her mission was clear: to make God known and loved.

Her witness reminds us that the Church in Canada has always been missionary, built through sacrifice, faith, and a willingness to go where God calls.

“Road closed” looks a little different in the North.

This photo shows our Stewardship Officer, Joe, standing at the end of the Dettah ice road across Yellowknife Bay on Great Slave Lake. For part of the year, this is a working road. By April, as the ice begins to break up, the sign goes up and the road simply disappears.

In the Diocese of Mackenzie-Fort Smith, this is part of everyday life. Travel routes change with the seasons, and reaching communities often depends on ice roads, flights, and careful timing.

Your support helps make sure that ministry continues, even when the road ahead looks like open water.

St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic mission in Prince George, BC is a small community of 40 families. It brings together people from many cultures who gather in the richness of the Eastern Christian tradition and grow together in faith.

The mission also serves beyond its walls. Members of the community have helped more than 250 Ukrainian refugees settle in the region and regularly prepare sandwiches for the local St. Vincent de Paul Society. These works of service reflect a mission founded in prayer and attentive to the needs of others.

This is the life of a living mission. It is grounded in the Word of God, strengthened through worship, and expressed in charity.

This Sunday, the Church marks the World Day of Prayer for Vocations.

Across Canada’s mission dioceses, communities depend on priests, religious, and lay leaders who are willing to serve wherever they are needed. In many places, that means long distances, small congregations, and a faithful presence.

Vocations grow in a culture of prayer and encouragement. They are formed over time, often beginning with a simple openness to God’s call.

Take time this week to pray for vocations. Pray for those already serving, and for those who may be discerning what God is asking of them.

Encourage the young people in your life to remain open. The Church continues her mission when people are willing to respond.

“I wrecked a lot of my clothes painting, but it was well worth it.”

In Carmacks, Yukon, a church repair project became something more than a job to finish. Families and volunteers came together to restore St. Jude’s Church, sharing the work, the meals, and the experience along the way.

What began with practical needs turned into a clear example of community in action.
