Tonight marks the end of a 69-year family tradition.
For nearly seven decades, my family gathered every Christmas Eve to celebrate one another and to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. That tradition came to a halt on December 4, when my father entered heaven.
Tonight, I am sitting alone in the family room that once held cousins, laughter, and shared prayers. The house is quiet. My mother is asleep… alone, yet full … having spent the day surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
And still, the words of Scripture echo as loudly tonight as they ever have:
“Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
Luke 2:10–11 (NKJV)
If I’m honest, I was hoping my family would be here tonight to help me cross over this first Christmas without my beloved husband, Keith.
💔 Two years ago i missed tge family tradition because I spent Christmas Eve in a hospital bed, freshly out of ICU. It was just me, Jesus, and the only Christmas Eve service I could find on television.
👩⚕️ Thanks to a kind nursing staff, I shared communion with orange juice and saltine crackers. I was grateful to be alive, and deeply aware that God still had purpose for me on this side of eternity.
Last year, as my husband faced the final months of his life, I joined our Christmas Eve tradition by Zoom … just like we did during COVID. There is something about home and family that brings peace to the soul, even in the darkest trials.
Christmas has always been sacred to me. I never put my nativity set away … not because dates matter, but because Jesus does.
We may not know the exact day He was born, but we know that He was born. And that truth is worth celebrating every single day.
People argue over traditions, calendars, and customs. But here is the unshakable truth I stand on:
✝️Jesus Christ came in the flesh.
✝️ He was born of a virgin.
✝️ He lived.
✝️ He died.
✝️ He rose from the grave.
✝️ He brought eternity in heaven to all who ask.
✝️ And He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
Jesus has never been merely a baby in a manger to me.
He is the Word … the power that spoke creation into being.
He is the Light that shattered darkness in the beginning.
He is the Word made flesh.
And with His very first cry on earth, He chose to bring life … and life more abundantly.
On the darkest night, heaven opened and declared that a King had been born.
“For there is born to you this day… a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
Traditions come and go. Seasons change. Loved ones pass from this side of glory to the next.
But Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
⭐️Tonight, I am thankful.
⭐️Thankful that God the Father loved us so much that He sent His Son.
⭐️Thankful for the promise of eternal life.
⭐️Thankful that one day I will be reunited with my husband and my father in heaven.
Whether our traditions are celebrated on this side of glory next year or on the other side … Jesus remains.
💫 MERRY CHRISTMAS 💫
May you find the Light that is the life of all mankind in the birth of Jesus Christ… no matter what this season looks like for you.
