Rock and roll history is filled with oddballs, visionaries, and misfits who pushed music into strange, exciting territory. The Birth of 96 Tears
The band started playing backyard parties, teen dances, and small local shows. They weren’t polished, but they had something better—raw energy. What set them apart was their organ-driven sound, thanks to Frank Rodriguez’s Farfisa organ. While other bands were building around guitars, The Mysterians leaned on that hypnotic, carnival-like riffing.
The song that would change their lives began as a rough sketch called “Too Many Teardrops.” It was a simple, almost desperate tune built on heartbreak and rejection. But once they reworked it into 96 Tears, it gained an edge—an urgency that was impossible to ignore.

In 1966, the band recorded 96 Tears on a tiny local label, Pa-Go-Go Records. They didn’t have a big studio or slick production—just raw sound pressed to vinyl. The Mystery Endures
While The Mysterians never repeated the massive success of 96 Tears, they carved out a cult legacy. ? himself never gave up on his vision. He continued performing under the same name, still wearing sunglasses, still insisting on his immortality.
Through the years, artists as varied as Iggy Pop, Aretha Franklin, and The Stranglers covered 96 Tears, cementing its status as a classic. In 1999, it was added to Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
To this day, when that Farfisa riff kicks in, it feels alive—like a reminder that rock and roll was never meant to be clean or perfect. It was meant to be wild, strange, and unpredictable.
A One-Hit Wonder? Not Quite.
Some dismiss ? and The Mysterians as a “one-hit wonder.” But that undersells what they accomplished. With one raw, three-minute burst of energy, they helped define garage rock, influenced punk, and left behind a mystery that still intrigues fans decades later.
