The Parable

The king sat upon a plain wooden throne, taking no joy in the crown that pressed heavy on his brow. He was a ruler who believed in grace, but justice was the pillar that held his kingdom together. When the royal treasury was first breached, he hesitated to impose a penalty. Yet as the thefts continued, the law demanded a response.

He decreed a punishment of ten lashes for the thief, hoping the threat would suffice. It did not. Silver goblets vanished; ancient manuscripts disappeared. The penalty rose to twenty, then thirty, and finally forty lashes—a brutal toll designed to break even the hardened, a sentence equivalent to death. Still, the thief struck again.

The Man in the Cage

There is a story, often attributed to various spiritual traditions, about a man who was found living inside a locked cage in the middle of an open field. Passersby would see him there, crouched behind iron bars, and call out to ask what crime he had committed to end up imprisoned. Each time, the man would look up with genuine confusion, as though the question itself made no sense. “I haven’t committed any crime,” he would say. “Then why don’t you walk out?” they would ask, pointing to the open door on the far side of the cage. And the man would stare at the door, then back at them, and say something that silenced every person who heard it: “I never noticed it was open.”

The cage in that story is offense. Not the kind of offense you feel and process and release. The kind you pick up, examine, decide is justified, and then carry with you for years — so long that you eventually forget you are carrying anything at all. You only know that the world feels smaller than it used to, that your prayers seem to hit a ceiling they never hit before, that certain names still produce a tightening in your chest that no amount of worship has been able to dissolve. The cage is not locked. The door has always been open. But the man inside has grown so accustomed to the bars that he has stopped looking for the exit.

The Bucket Effect

Fishermen who catch crabs rarely bother with a lid. They don’t need one. Put a single crab in an open bucket and it will climb out within minutes. Put several crabs in the same bucket and something strange happens: the moment one of them starts to climb, the others reach up and pull it back down. Not to escape themselves. Just to make sure it doesn’t get out either. Marine biologists have a mundane explanation for this — competition, instinct, the chaos of too many bodies in too small a space. But the phrase “crab mentality” survived as a description of something distinctly human, because most people recognize it the moment they hear it. Somewhere in every life, in every family, in every church, in every workplace, there is a bucket, and there are hands reaching up to pull someone back down the moment they start to rise.

What makes this pattern worth sitting with isn’t the crabs. It’s the question underneath it: why would anyone spend their energy holding someone else down instead of climbing themselves? What do they actually gain? And what happens to the hand that keeps reaching up to pull — especially when the one it’s grabbing was never meant to stay in that bucket at all?

The Word That Isn’t Quite There

Ask most Christians to describe hell and you will get fire. Screaming. A pitchfork, maybe, though that image owes more to Dante and medieval woodcuts than to anything Moses, David, Isaiah, or Paul ever wrote. Here is the uncomfortable fact that rarely gets preached from the pulpit: the word “hell” as most people picture it does not have a single, stable home in the original texts of Scripture. What English Bibles flatten into one word, the original languages actually give us at least four: Sheol, the shadowy Hebrew realm of the dead, ambiguous and largely silent about torment; Hades, its Greek equivalent, borrowed from pagan cosmology to translate a Hebrew idea that didn’t map cleanly onto Greek thought; Tartarus, mentioned exactly once (2 Peter 2:4), a term lifted straight from Greek mythology to describe a holding place for fallen angels; and Gehenna, the word Jesus Himself used most often, which was not a mythological realm at all but a literal valley outside Jerusalem — the Valley of Hinnom — where refuse burned and, centuries earlier, child sacrifice had taken place.

This is not a trick to explain hell away. It is an invitation to notice that Scripture is far less tidy on this subject than sermons tend to be, and that even the most devoted Christians — across two thousand years of councils, creeds, and denominations — have never fully agreed on what these words mean, how literally to take them, or how they fit together. If the architecture of the afterlife is this contested among the faithful, perhaps the more urgent question isn’t “what happens after we die,” but a much closer one: what is happening in us, right now, today, before death ever enters the conversation.

Every soul carries a hallway - and at its end, a door we promised ourselves we would never open again.

The Doors We Closed Before We Knew How

There is a room inside every person that they have not visited in years. Not because they forgot it was there, but because remembering it costs too much. These rooms were built in childhood, or adolescence, or in some season of suffering so sharp that the mind did what minds do when they cannot flee — it walled off the pain, drew a deadbolt, and walked away. The room stayed. The pain stayed. The memory stayed. And somehow, without anyone noticing, the hallway leading to it grew longer, darker, and quieter with each passing year.

We do not always know we are building these rooms. A child who is told they are too sensitive, too loud, too much, learns to pack away the parts of themselves that provoke rejection. A teenager who survives abuse learns to construct walls so high that even they cannot see over them. A young adult who loses someone they love without warning — a parent, a sibling, a friend — may find that the grief does not dissipate so much as it retreats, pulling up roots from the visible garden of their heart and moving underground, where it continues to grow in the dark. These are not acts of weakness. They are acts of survival. The mind builds the room to protect the person. The problem is that what was meant to be a temporary shelter becomes a permanent prison.

The Silence Between the Amens

On prayer, listening, and the forgotten discipline of waiting on God when the room is empty and the words have run out.

There is a kind of prayer the modern church has almost entirely forgotten. It is not the prayer of petition, though that has its place. It is not the prayer of worship, though the heavens bend low when we offer it. It is the prayer that comes after the words have ended, after the final amen has been spoken, after the congregation has shuffled back to their cars and the building has gone quiet. It is the prayer of silence, the discipline of simply sitting in the presence of God and listening for a voice you are not entirely sure will come.

We have turned prayer into something it was never meant to be. In our haste, in our obsession with productivity and measurable outcomes, we have reduced the most intimate communion available to a human soul into a transaction, a checklist, a monologue delivered at speed to a God we treat more like a celestial complaint window than a Father who longs to be near His children. We speak, we ask, we list our grievances and our desires, and then we leave. We do not wait. We do not sit. We do not listen. And in our failure to listen, we have missed the entire point of what prayer was always supposed to be.

The Wound That Walks

On betrayal by the familiar, the conspiracy of the jealous, and the quiet road that leads out of bitterness without leading you into coldness.

The Knife You Did Not See

There is a particular kind of wound that does not come from the battlefield. It comes from the table. It comes from the hand you shook, the shoulder you leaned on, the voice that called you friend. Scripture names this wound with chilling precision:

Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.— Psalm 41:9 (KJV)

David wrote these words a thousand years before Yeshua walked the earth, and Yeshua Himself quoted them the night before He died. The wound of betrayal is not new. It is as old as friendship, as old as trust, as old as the first time two people broke bread together and one of them calculated how to take what the other had. What makes this wound different from others is the location of the blade. An enemy strikes from the front. A betrayer strikes from beside you, often with a smile still on their face.
