LEAF at Elon University

LEAF at Elon University We are LEAF: a welcoming and inclusive Christian community at Elon University that affirms that all people are beloved children of God. All are welcome!

LEAF is a campus ministry at Elon University which began in 2007. LEAF is a student-driven organization. This organization is made possibly by the support of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and The Episcopal Church. In addition, we are supported by a Board of Directors, The Truitt Center at Elon University, and Macedonia Lutheran Church and The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter. Th

e LEAF student leaders are an elected group of students who serve as the liaison between LEAF Community and the Elon University SGA. The student leaders guide the mission, programming, and community LEAF fosters. Julie Tonnesen serves as the LEAF Campus Minister, and The Reverend Joel Harter serves as LEAF's faculty advisor. We meet for worship, followed by a meal, in the Numen Lumen Pavilion at Elon University on Sundays at 4:30 pm during the academic year, and we encourage you to join us for worship, food, and conversation. In addition, we meet for conversation and coffee in Irazu Coffee Shop from 4-6 pm on Tuesday afternoons.

"I joined LEAF at the beginning of my freshman year, and it has been a home on campus for me ever since! I am grateful for everyone that I have been blessed to worship and be in fellowship with, for the weekly home-cooked meals, for the amazing pastors I have gotten to learn from, and for the opportunities for personal and spiritual growth that LEAF has made integral to my college experience."

"LEAF has been one of the most formative and encouraging communities I’ve ever been part of. It has allowed me to be authentically myself, explore my own religious beliefs, and stay rooted in a thoughtful and supportive community. Through coffee hours, retreats, service opportunities, and Sunday worship, I’ve been surrounded by incredible students and professional staff who care deeply about one another. Meet River:

"LEAF has given me a community on campus that I will always be deeply grateful for. Coming into college, I was worried I wouldn’t find a community that felt like my home church, which is a place where I feel truly known, supported, and encouraged in my faith. Joining LEAF completely changed that for me. Through this group, I’ve been able to have meaningful conversations about my faith with peers who love and care about God the same way I do. I’ve also been incredibly blessed by the campus ministers, who are always willing to listen, guide, and answer my questions. LEAF has become such an important part of my college experience and daily life. I truly don’t know what I would do without this community and, of course, the amazing coffee from Irazu each Tuesday."

"I joined LEAF thanks to my dear friend, Molly, my junior year of college. Even though I am Jewish, I felt truly welcomed as a “friend” of LEAF, and so appreciated the aligned values, fun social outings, reflective worship services, and meaningful meals I was lucky to share during my Elon journey. The LEAF community leads with intention, hospitality, laughter, and lots of good pre-final exam cookies!
