History of Tom’s Creek United Baptist Church
In the year of our Lord 1840, Tom’s Creek United Baptist Church was organized in the community of Mingo in Johnson County, Kentucky later renamed Tutor Key. Throughout the church’s 183 years of existence, there have been several milestones that have impacted the life and service of the church. In the early 1870’s a division developed among the members. No one seems to remember the exact cause of the divisions, but it is believed to have been something about the doctrine of Sacrament and Foot Washing. Unable to come to an understanding over their differences, several members withdrew with the intention of establishing another church.
In the 1900’s, the Tom’s Creek United Baptist Church was renovated and remained on its current location. Unfortunately, on February 28, 2004, the church was destroyed in an arson fire. The new church located on the same property was completed in 2008. Many churches, organizations and individuals supported the rebuilding of the church for which we are very grateful. There are plaques located at the entrance of the church on both sides displaying the names of all of those who supported its rebuilding.
The church also suffered a great loss on August 25, 2017, because of the untimely death of Elder James D. Rice. After his death the church struggled to keep the doors open and on June 2, 2018, the church ended membership with the Paint Union Association of United Baptist. The church will remain the Tom’s Creek United Baptist Church for historical reasons. However, the church has redefined the term “United” to mean that we stand as one with all churches and Christians in the service of the Lord. Tom’s Creek United Baptist Church is now on new journey and a different direction, as we strongly wish to worship with all denominations and fellowship with all churches and their members. The church wants to invite everyone to join us in song and worship every Wednesday evening and the second and fourth Sunday evenings of each month at 7:00PM with drinks and refreshments in the fellowship hall from 6:00 – 6:50PM.
We look forward to many opportunities to assemble and rejoice in the Lord. Psalm 133:1 says, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell in unity!” Everyone is always welcome and we are hopeful that you will help us in fulfilling this guidance from the Lord.
