Salvation in the Old Testament
Text: Jeremiah1-3[According to the Prophets] A series of Questions God asks His people.
Before salvation comes, there must come a repentance, for the people were immersed in sin, taken on them by copying the sins of the nations around them. And this was no different in Jesus’ day. One thing common in Jesus’ day was a need to call people to repentance, which both Jesus and John the Baptist did.
I. How Jeremiah was called into the Ministry: [Jeremiah 1: 5] – “ Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before thou came forth out of the womb I sanctified thee and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”
II. “Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak; for I am a child. But the Lord said unto me: say not unto Me I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.” Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, says the Lord. Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put My words in thy mouth. See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant. See, first there comes a doing away with the old way of doing things, and then comes in the living of a new life, a new way of doing things. Although there first is a change of heart that takes place, and then the ushering in of the new way of doing things; and God’s word is the catalyst, when moved upon by the Holy Spirit. A life lived by faith is still the means of salvation.
III. [Jeremiah 1: 16] – “ And I will utter My judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken Me and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands. These things must be repented of.
IV. And it shall come to pass, when you shall say Why does the Lord all these things unto us? Then shall thou shall answer them, Like you have forsaken Me, and served other gods, in your land, so shall you serve strange gods in a land that is not yours.
V. [Jeremiah 6: 14] – “ They have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly, saying, peace, peace, when there is no peace.” [Jeremiah 6: 19] – “ Because they have not hearkened unto my words, but have rejected them.
VI. The reason the Lord pours out all these judgments upon Israel, and upon Judah, is because they are a witness to those nations round about them, so they have an example to follow: if they follow the Lord, they shall be blessed, if not, they shall be punished. A witness they shall be, whether a good witness, or a bad witness. God’s witness of Himself still stands, He will bring honor and glory to Himself, whether in love and mercy or in justice and righteousness. No matter who you are, if you follow the Lord with your whole heart, you will be blessed, however, if not, but only follow the Lord with a heart feignedly, you will only be rewarded half-heartedly: “ Because they have not hearkened unto My words, nor to My law, but rejected it! Yet for all this, His anger is not quenched, but His hand is stretched out still.
Despite the hardness of Israel’s heart, their God still finds a way to single out those who still have faith in the Lord God, Almighty. God has not left Himself without a witness. He still has His prophets, who faithfully preach His word. His hand is stretched out to a rebellious and a stiffnecked people, but to the humble in heart, He still opens His heart To them, at least to those who acknowledge his word, and His sovereignty. [Jeremiah 9: 23,24] – “ Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, nor the mighty man in his might, nor the rich man in his riches; but let those who glory, glory in this, that he knows and understands Me. [Jeremiah 24: 7] – “ And I will give them an heart to know Me, that I am the Lord: and they shall be My people, and I will be their God: for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.” Those in the O.T., looked forward to the cross. And those who live now look backward to the cross, as a means to salvation.
