The Christian life is like a marathon. You have a start, a route and a finish. Accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior is crossing the starting line. Running the race includes learning about the Lord, living what you learn, praying, fellowshipping, evangelizing and loving the Lord and others before yourself. Finishing the race is dying in faith or being translated at the Rapture.

Runners don't get to dictate how the marathon works or what the rules are. Cheaters get disqualified. Running near others without starting at the beginning means you're not actually in the race. Quitting the race is not the same as finishing.

It's not a sprint. There will be faster and slower portions. It takes commitment. It's not meant to be done alone. The prize is an incorruptible crown of victory where we get to spend forever with the Lord, who loves us, and our fellow runners.

When you want to reach someone with the truth, ask yourself, "What are the particular roadblocks to their belief that are present?" Also ask, "Who or what would this person hold in priority, trusted authority, or importance?" Once you identify someone's questions, disagreements or challenges and who or what they may listen to as valid source, you can present a relevant and personal message that has the highest chance of being considered. Speak to those present, not to those absent.

With the Jewish audience observing the Feast of Weeks, Pentecost, Peter knew that the observers of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit being poured out on the faithful disciples were confused by exactly what was happening. He also knew that the risen Lord was the only way to life everlasting. To correct faulty accusations of drunkenness and provide biblical context from known scripture, Peter started with the prophet Joel and continued connecting dots with the confirmed and famous godly King David's words. Joel showed the miracle happening was foretold and David showed that he knew the Messiah, who was Jesus, would be at the Father's right hand, after delivering David soul from death, because Jesus could not be conquered, but would instead conquer it. "Jesus" means "God is Salvation". How fitting.

Do you have any roadblocks to belief? From whom or what would you listen?

Biblical truth is no more dependent upon man's agreement or high opinion, than the laws of nature are. Much in the same way, when we fail to spiritually understand the universe in which we live, and how it operates, we risk missing out on the benefits of knowledge and wisdom or suffering the consequences of ignorance. This was certainly the case on the first Pentecost after the Resurrection, shown in Acts 2.

While the Holy Spirit was moving mightily, skeptics attributed alcohol to be the source of inspiration at a 9 AM saintly gathering. It is well stated in many verses that God's truth and salvation seem as foolishness to the world, but describe the power to save. 1 Corinthians 1:18 — For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:21 — For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 1 Corinthians 1:23 — But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 1 Corinthians 2:14 — But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Will you dismiss the truth without exploring it, as foolishness, or will you take the time to research that which controls all eternity? The choice is for each individual to make.

Why are many Christians so ineffective in the culture these days? I believe one of the main reasons is their resistance to the baptism and giftings of the Holy Spirit. Jesus told His disciples they would "receive POWER, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me..." Power here, or "dynamis" in the Greek, is the strength or ability to accomplish something great. To deny this power as needful today robs Christians of the might required for victory.

Cessationism is the belief that the events of Acts 2, with the outpouring of the power of the Holy Spirit, were only intended to last until the completion of the New Testament, at which point we would have all the information and instruction needed to live a new covenant life. If information was all that is needed to do God's will, then the 3.5 years of in-person seminary that Jesus gave the disciples should have been enough, but Jesus clearly intended and instructed that more would be required. The same benefits of the Holy Spirit that were seen in the book of Acts are needed today. Knowledge alone is not sufficient.

My wife likes to watch survival shows, like "Alone". The contestants are knowledgeable and practiced survivalists, but without access to the proper equipment that enables them to perform the work for life, they get weaker and ineffective the more time goes on. Knowing there are fish and being equipped with the power and ability to catch them are two different things. Jesus said, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." We need the power of Holy Spirit to mightily accomplish the will of God.

What is God's heart toward us? Some think Him to be a mad and disappointed judge in the sky with a "whack-a-man" hammer just waiting for our next failure to thump us. Others think He is a peace-sign hippie who, in the name of love, is cool with whatever makes you happy. Here's God's own words to describe His heart toward us.

John 3:16 KJV — For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:18 KJV — He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

2 Peter 3:9 KJV — The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Romans 5:8 KJV — But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Luke 24:47 KJV — And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Even after the disciples had failed to stand up in full display of support for Jesus after His arrest, the day Jesus resurrected... John 20:19 KJV — Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, "Peace be unto you."

God is a righteous judge, but the blood of Jesus wipes His followers' sins away, thus finding them innocent of all charges and free to spend forever with the Lord. Take advantage of it.

I was asked a great question when I was young, "If I were on trial, accused of being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict me without a shadow of a doubt?" Be careful not to judge someone too quickly. Quite often a specific event will prompt the formerly discreet into public declaration. Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus were both disciples of Jesus, but their following of Him was mostly in secret until Jesus' crucifixion. Directly after the brutal, unjust and illegal ex*****on, these two hidden worshippers stepped up publicly to care for the physical remains of their Lord.

Everyone who is boldly and sincerely proclaiming "Jesus is Lord" has experienced a life-changing event. Someone may have shared scripture which the Holy Spirit brought to life in that person. A tragedy may have occurred that caused deep introspection. A miraculous healing may have given mortality extra weight. True love may have been expressed without being earned or deserved.

Not everyone who believes will preach at the same volume. That being said, no follower of Jesus should deny Him, nor remain hidden for the duration of their lives. Jesus said that those who confess Him before men would be confessed by Jesus before the Father. Do not be afraid.

"Be careful what you wish for." We humans are easily swayed by "group think" or "mob mentality." We can be manipulated to support things obviously harmful to ourselves, if its presented in an effective way. Leaders, the media and those who shout the loudest with the most frequency and silence the opposition have taken this as a consistent tactic throughout history. What we are told we should wish for can often times be the very things that bring our demise.

Jesus was a completely innocent man, who had never sinned and was condemned to death, even after the judge found him 100% guiltless. The chanting of "Crucify him!" by the jealous, insecure leaders convinced the mob to, in the moment, agree to kill an innocent man, which was consenting to murder. But the sway of the "heat of the moment" made crouds of people do things that hours later they would regret. What was the result when they "got what they wished for?"

Luke 23:48 "And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned." They were disturbed and upset, but it was too late to change anything, now that Jesus had suffered what He did. Get in the habit of questioning what the talking heads say and examine what's actually true and right. It's your own head that hits your pillow at night. Be sure you can rest with it and get right with the Lord, if you can't.

How many times has someone said, "If God is real, let Him (fill in the requirement) to prove it..." Those statements are usually disingenuous, meaning even if God did preform the stated task, the individual would continue in their disbelief or rejection of God. The entire account of Jesus' earthly ministry, which was filled with miracles, insights and prophecies that were unrivaled in human history up to that point were not sufficient evidence for those who were hard of heart to the truth.

The mocking words of the crowd during the crucifixion saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God," and "If you are the king of the Jews, save thyself," prove that all the previous 3.5 years of walking and talking miracles meant nothing to those who wanted to reject God. It is rarely a lack of information, confirmation or evidence that keeps people from turning to the Lord. Or has always been the difficulty surrendering our prideful hearts to the One who made us, instead of ourselves being our own bosses.

How do we know someone loves us? The actions are the proof. Words mean nothing if there's not something that shows us that it's true. Giving what's right when receiving what's wrong is a way to live out love. Jesus knew hurt, insults and lies would be used against Himself, but still came down from above to win us from ourselves.

A tried and true friend will be there to the end. They are few and far between. Jesus self-sacrificed to give all of us life, sharing love with us, supreme. Rejected by His own, illegally condemned, yet "Forgive them," He would say. Whom shall we serve and give all of our love? What price would we all pay?

The world is trying to force the following lie upon the way we all think; "Your perception of truth defines what IS true." It means that whatever you think to be true (as long as it falls within the acceptable options) is permitted to redefine what others think. Whether it's about gender, misinformation, science, abortion, sexual behavior, religion or a whole host of topics, the worldly and Satanic position is that usually the anti-biblical choice is the better, moral one and the biblical stance is the intolerant and bigoted one. It's a complete perversion of God's truth and rejects any efforts to objectively consider what is actually true.

This should come as no surprise as it's a tactic used since the Garden of Eden. Jesus faced this kind of attack when being accused before Pontius Pilate by the Jewish chief priests. They said, "We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God." From the chief priests' perspective, Jesus was a threat and was claiming to be the Son of God, the Messiah. They didn't care to evaluate the claim objectively, having already determined the only acceptable answer for them, being that Jesus was false. They insisted that Pilate adopt their position as truth. Pilate never once agreed with them, but condemned Jesus to death anyway (repeatedly proclaiming Jesus' innocence) just to appease the multitude.

Lies and repetition were the method of forcing a small group's deception upon the world. Those in power didn't stop it and instead failed in their duty to carry out justice, becoming complicit in the guilt. There is nothing new under the sun, as we see the same patterns happening today in most facets of life. Resist it and seek God's truth.

When someone wrongs us or those we love, our desire to take matters into our own hands can be overwhelming. The abuse of power that Jesus's disciples saw against Jesus in the garden at Gethsemane, where a confidant had betrayed Jesus under false pretenses, leading to an illegal raid and arrest, led Peter to take his newly acquired weapon and start dispensing some street justice. Jesus was not amused nor approving and immediately called for the violence to stop while healing the damage. Self defense is permitted, recognized by the fact that Jesus had prior that evening instructed the disciples to bring swords with them, but God had a plan for the events that were occurring, which Peter did not comprehend. God would hold the abusers to account, removing their country less than 40 years later.

Knowing that our flesh would want revenge, God gave some very specific verses showing He is not behind vigilantism. Paul collected many of these in Romans 12 - "Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not... Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord... Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good."

Proper ex*****on of law enforcement and equitable justice is an expectation God holds authorities to, since the lack of such erodes trust, causes suffering and accelerates levels of corruption in other areas. The nation of Israel lost their homeland more than once by the leaders turning away from God and being partial in their justice. If God would do it with the nation He founded, how much more will He do it to others who claim, "In God we trust"?

We all know what's it's like to let someone down, to want to be steadfast and fall short, or to believe something in your heart, but miss the mark in your actions. It can be crushing and hurtful, both to ourselves and those we fail. It's easy to believe that God spends all day just disappointed with us because we're not perfect, but that's not God's heart toward us.

Peter, for example, was told by Jesus that he would deny Jesus three times before the c**k would crow it's final crow. Peter believed he would be 100% strong and faithful to Jesus. In the end, when a man asked if Peter was a companion of Jesus, we see the following, Luke 22:60-62 — "And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the c**k crew. And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the c**k crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And Peter went out, and wept bitterly."

Was Jesus surprised by Peter's actions? No. Jesus told Peter what he would do beforehand. Was Jesus hurt? I'm sure, because it was hurtful. Did Jesus give Peter a look of disgust? No. I believe Jesus was trying to show Peter that even though He knew what happened, Jesus still loved Peter. After Jesus was raised from the dead, an angel told those at the empty tomb to get the word back to the Disciples, and specifically, Peter in Mark 16:7 — "But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you." Jesus didn't reject Peter. He received the repentant heart and encouraged it further.

God loves each of us with that same heart. Respond accordingly.
