“The Kingdom of Heaven is Like

A Church Potluck”

7th Sermon of the “The Kingdom of Heaven is Like…” Series

This week we conclude our sermon series, “The Kingdom of Heaven Is Like...” with one final image that feels deeply familiar to church life: the church potluck. In Luke 14:15–24, Jesus describes the Kingdom of God as a great banquet where unexpected people are welcomed to the table. Through humor, storytelling, and the beloved image of a fellowship hall full of casseroles and conversation, this sermon reminds us that the Kingdom of God is joyful, generous, and radically welcoming. In God’s Kingdom there is always room for one more chair, and

nobody eats alone.

Reflection Questions

1) When have you experienced true belonging in a community or around a table?

2) Who might feel overlooked or left out in our community right now?

3) What does “radical hospitality” look like in everyday life?

4) How can our church better reflect the open and welcoming table of Jesus?

5) Where is God inviting you to “make room for one more chair” this week?

Affirmation of Faith

We believe in God, who prepares a table wide enough for all people. We believe in Jesus Christ, who ate with sinners, welcomed outsiders, and taught us that grace always makes room for one more. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who gathers strangers into community and turns ordinary meals into holy moments. We believe the Church is called to practice radical hospitality, to feed the hungry, to welcome the lonely, and to live as signs of God’s coming Kingdom. And we believe that in God’s Kingdom, nobody eats alone. Amen.

“The Kingdom of Heaven is Like

The Coffee Group”

6th Sermon of the “The Kingdom of Heaven is Like…” Series

Every small town has a coffee table where the same people gather day after day. Stories get retold, weather gets debated, and life is shared one cup at a time. In Luke 18, Jesus tells the story of a persistent widow who refuses to stop showing up until justice is done. This message explores how faith is often built not through dramatic moments, but through the ordinary discipline of persistence. Prayer is more than a one-time request it is a relationship that keeps showing up.

Reflection Questions

1) What ordinary rhythms or routines have quietly shaped your faith over time?

2) When have you experienced the challenge of continuing to pray without immediate answers?

3) Who are the people in your life that have “kept showing up” for you consistently?

4) How might God be working through ordinary, everyday moments in your life right now?

5) What would it look like for you to practice persistent faith this week?

Affirmation of Faith

We believe in God, who faithfully listens to the cries of God’s people. We believe in Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray without losing heart and revealed the Kingdom through ordinary lives and everyday moments. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who strengthens weary hearts, encourages persistent faith, and meets us again and again with grace. We believe the Kingdom of Heaven grows quietly among us, through prayer, compassion, community, and faithful presence. And we believe that no act of love, no prayer offered in hope, and no faithful step toward God is ever wasted. Thanks be to God. Amen.

“The Kingdom of Heaven is Like

A Road Trip”

5th Sermon of the “The Kingdom of Heaven is Like…” Series

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a road trip, full of excitement,

uncertainty, and unexpected moments that shape who we

become. In Luke 10, Jesus sends out seventy ordinary people

with no detailed plan, just a call to go. This week, we explore

how faith requires movement, trust, and a willingness to step into

the unknown. The Kingdom advances not through perfect plans,

but through people willing to go where love is needed.

Reflection Questions

1) Where in your life might God be calling you to “go,” even if you feel unprepared?

2) What fears or uncertainties tend to hold you back from stepping out in faith?

3) When have you experienced growth through an unexpected or difficult “journey” moment?

4) Who in your life right now might need love, presence, or encouragement from you?

5) What would it look like this week to take one simple, faithful step forward?

“The Kingdom of Heaven is Like

A Small Town Friday Night”

4th Sermon of the “The Kingdom of Heaven is Like…” Series

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a front porch, a place of waiting, watching, and welcome. In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, we encounter a God who doesn’t stay inside but waits and runs to embrace us. This message invites us to both receive that grace and become people who extend that same welcome to others.

1) When have you experienced a place or person that felt like a “front porch” of welcome?

2) Where do you see yourself in the story, on the road, on the

porch, or somewhere in between?

3) What makes it hard to believe that you are fully welcomed by God?

4) Who in your life might be “on the road” right now, and how can you show them grace?

5) What would it look like for our church to be a true “front porch” for our community?
