I am not sure where the past three months have gone, but I am sure of one thing–everything seems like it was a blur.

The end of school is always busy, but throw in a state basketball tournament, a state baseball tournament, graduation, and graduation parties–all GREAT THINGS, but there were more days with multiple activities than there were without.

Today was my first day of a “slowed down pace” in a while, and I have to say it was nice. We tried out a new recipe, sat around the table, and all ate together with no time constraints.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”
Being still is difficult for me. Yes, my friends totally agree with that statement.

But today, I was reminded of something important. When I slow down long enough to be still, I begin to notice just how much I have to be grateful for.
The laughter around the table.
The conversations that are usually rushed.
The blessings that can easily be overlooked in the chaos of busy schedules and full calendars.

Sometimes we move so quickly from one thing to the next that we forget to pause and enjoy the moment.

Today reminded me that stillness is not wasted time. Sometimes it is where gratitude grows the most.

This past weekend at the lake, Mason bought a collapsible fishing rod. It folds up small enough to carry anywhere, but within seconds it can be fully extended and ready to use.

What I loved most was his reasoning behind buying it.
Some of his thoughts included:
“If I’m playing baseball and there’s a lake nearby, I can take it on the bus and be fishing ready.” Or, “I can keep it in the car when we travel, and if we pass a good fishing spot, I’ll already be ready.”

Honestly, that’s pretty good thinking. He wants to stay prepared for any opportunity to fish.
As I listened to him talk, I couldn’t help but think about Jesus’ words in Matthew 4:19: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Jesus called His disciples to live ready, ready to share hope, encouragement, truth, and the gospel whenever the opportunity appeared.

Maybe being “fishers of men” looks a lot like Mason’s fishing rod. We stay spiritually prepared so that when God opens a door, a conversation, a hurting person, or an unexpected opportunity, we are ready.

Maybe it is a coworker needing encouragement. Maybe a friend is asking spiritual questions. Maybe someone is quietly carrying pain and you can help carry the load in some way. Maybe there is a moment when kindness or truth can point someone toward Christ.

The question is:
Are we living “fishing ready”?

Following Jesus means more than believing privately. It means living attentively, aware that God may use us at any moment to reach someone else.

“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have…” 1 Peter 3:15

“…you do not know what tomorrow will bring…For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” James 4:14

About 6:30ish this morning, I turned to tell Kelly something that had come to me during the night. In that quiet moment, I realized his side of the bed was empty. When the alarm sounded, I slipped on my slippers and padded through the living room for that first cup of coffee. Glancing out the front windows, I saw the scene God had prepared for me to greet the day—a tender, gentle reminder of how fragile life truly is, and of how important it is never to take a single moment for granted.

We may not know what tomorrow will bring, but we do know this: we are held by a God who loves us, shelters us, and gently calls us to worship Him today—His day.

My oldest brother has coached football forever. He writes a weekly newsletter for coaches across the country. This past week he included this quote…lots of wisdom here for all of us.

“I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. I possess tremendous power to make life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration, I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis is escalated or de-escalated, and a person is humanized or de-humanized. If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming.”

Growing up in the Texas Panhandle, we learned quickly not to trust the weather forecast too much. There were days that started with shorts, thunderstorms, and tornado warnings… and ended with snow.

One word seemed to describe life there:
Change.
And honestly, that still describes much of life now.
Change in age.
Change in health.
Change in relationships.
Change in circumstances.
Change in plans.
So much around us shifts constantly.

But there is One who does not.
The same God who walked with Adam and Eve still walks with us.
The same God who showed mercy to Rahab and Ruth still shows mercy today.
The same God who remained faithful through every generation is still faithful now.

People change. Seasons change. Life changes.
But God’s character does not.

That is something we can count on.
