The Path of Spiritual Freedom is an individualized creative spiritual practice. We live in a time of unprecedented interest in spirituality.

My Soul-Traveling Methodist Mother Gets Good News

In the twenty-five years since I first introduced my mother to the teachings of Eckankar, she's never expressed much interest. So, I was surprised one day when she mentioned that she had begun singing HU, the ancient name for God, in her own Methodist church.

She also confided that she had had trouble sleeping the night before. "So, I decided to do my Eckankar Soul Travel," she said.

"You did?" I asked in amazement.

"What did you do?" My mother smiled. "I lay down on the bed, relaxed my mind, and sang HU. Soon I found myself drifting off into the clouds. I was just floating along, enjoying myself, when out of the clouds came a baby's foot! And you know, somehow I knew right away Alissa was pregnant." Alissa was her granddaughter.

Two days later, Alissa called my mom.

"Hi, kid," my mother said. "Whatcha got cooking?" Grandma, how did you know?" exclaimed Alissa. It was true! Alissa was indeed expecting a baby the following January.

That day I realized each Soul is making its spiritual journey in its own way.
My mother, a Methodist, was enjoying the benefits of singing HU. In her own way she was opening to the daily wonder of God's love for Soul.

An Out-of-Body Journey Shows a Woman Her True Self

I was very curious about Soul Travel when I was new to Eckankar and wanted to experience it for myself.

So, with great anticipation, I practiced my nightly spiritual exercises, hoping I would leave my body and travel the inner worlds as Soul.

But most of the time, I just dozed off to sleep and woke up the next morning with little recollection of any experiences. Still, I patiently wrote down in my journal whatever I learned from my dreams. This went on for a long time.

Then one night, it happened!

I was lying in bed, feeling very relaxed.

Quietly, I began to sing HU, an ancient love song to God. As usual, I started dozing off to sleep.

All of a sudden, I had the sensation of feeling feathery light, as if I was floating on air. I knew my body was in bed, and yet there I was—floating! With my eyes closed, I looked around with my inner vision. There were trees everywhere. Then I knew I was out of my body.

Slowly I floated toward the kitchen, and I found I was in the middle of a forest. The wall that separated the bedroom from the kitchen was gone. I looked toward what was supposed to be the kitchen window.

Instead of seeing the street, I saw a river surrounded by shrubs and trees and heard the sound of rushing water.

Happily, I said to myself, this is fantastic! I'm out of my physical body. This must be Soul Travel!

Then I accidentally wiggled a toe on my right foot.

Immediately I was back in my body in bed. I remained awake for a while, trying to comprehend this incredible and awesome experience. It was so real! As I lay there, I thought, so this is what Eckankar is all about. It is a teaching to realize and know one's True Self!

I had proven that I am Soul, a spiritual being that is separate from the physical body. It was the beginning of my conscious spiritual journey back home to God.

Healing Comes via an Unexpected Past-Life Recall

For many years, self-contempt colored every aspect of my life, telling me I deserved neither spiritual unfoldment nor the love of God. I didn't know where this problem came from.

One day, a chain of events began. They revealed the hand of Divine Spirit, blessing my entire life-and gave me the missing pieces to understand and heal my past.

It started as a fascination with the American war in Vietnam. I wondered if I had been there in a previous life. I believed in past lives. But I had been born in the early sixties, and this war had occurred in the 1960s and 1970s.

Even though I knew I couldn't have been there during the fighting, I was drawn toward everything about the war, even going to visit the long, shining, black wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

I walked along the wall, examining the engraved names of those who had perished or were missing in action and the flowers and mementos placed at their base by loved ones.

Suddenly, I became aware of a change in my posture. I was walking completely differently. I read more names and noticed I was thinking of the soldiers as "other veterans".

Why would I think this, as if I had been there too? It upset me so much, I had to leave.

A few years went by. My husband and I went to see the film Born on the Fourth of July. The movie portrayed life in the 1950s.

"Jeremiah," I asked my husband, "when did the Vietnam War start?"

"Nineteen fifty-five", he replied.

Suddenly, my inner vision opened. I was watching a movie of my own past life.

It was the late 1950s. The setting was Vietnam. It was the early days of the war. I was good at spotting the b***y traps set by Vietcong, but one day, I saw that something had tripped one of these traps.

The b***y trap was about to detonate. It would fling shrapnel in every direction, killing or wounding anyone in its path. Other members of my platoon were nearby. I had a split second to make a decision.

I threw myself on the explosive.

The next thing I knew, I was hovering above the scene, watching the platoon gather around my torn and lifeless body.

My commanding officer was angry and disgusted. "He was a fool to commit su***de like that!"

Abruptly my blissful, floating state collapsed. Su***de? I was filled with confusion, shame, and self-contempt. Maybe he was right. What had I been thinking before I jumped?

I couldn't remember.

After the violent exit from that life, my rebirth into my present one was quick. But I carried that intense moment of regret with me.

I had remembered the lifetime that caused my feelings. Now I wondered, how can I heal this experience?

Not long after, I was in an Eckankar class where we were sharing stories of spiritual
experiences. Suddenly, I felt an urge to talk about the Vietnam lifetime. I could feel myself burning with shame as I began to speak. I slowly described the war, my platoon, and the abrupt ending to that life. The class listened in silence and with love. I could feel the presence of the Mahanta*.

By the time I had finished speaking, something inside me had changed. It was as if a healing balm of divine love had been poured upon my heart. I gazed around the room and realized something important: I had not committed su***de in
Vietnam. I knew it with absolute certainty. I had acted out of love for my platoon.

From that moment on, I was a different person. The self-contempt was gone. In its place is the certainty that I am indeed worthy of God's love. This gift from the Mahanta has set me free.
