Waves of fear moved through me as I hung up the phone. The doctor's office had just called to reschedule my husband's surgery.

We thought we would have several weeks to prepare ourselves, but instead his operation would be in the morning.

I was terrified. The last time he had surgery, he ended up in the intensive-care unit for weeks. That procedure was supposed to have been minor surgery. Instead, he almost died.

I knew my husband needed me to be strong, loving, and supportive. Instead, I was filled with fear. I trembled as I read his pre-surgery brochure, barely able to focus on the words.

I decided to do a spiritual exercise and ask for help from the ECK, the Holy Spirit. The ECK is the force that sustains all life.

I closed my eyes and put my attention on the Mahanta*, my Inner Guide. Then for several minutes, I sang HU, an ancient name for God.

"Please, help me to be calm, strong, and loving for my husband, no matter what the outcome," I asked inwardly.

A short time later, I felt calmer and walked outside to get the mail.

In the mailbox, I found a large, pretty envelope with a picture of a butterfly on it. It was addressed to me. I have always loved butterflies. For me, they symbolize transformation.

Inside the envelope I found a beautiful, gold-and blue butterfly made of metal. It came with a matching card, along with a letter from my daughter.

It was a very special thank-you note for something I had done for her recently. She also thanked me for being her mother.

This wonderful and unexpected gift immediately opened my heart. It was the kind of letter every parent would be happy to receive and was a gift all by itself.

A wave of warmth, light, and love spread through me, and tears sprung up in my eyes. My inner prayer for calm and strength had been answered so quickly!

The Holy Spirit had used my daughter's gift of love to open my heart and remind me of God's many blessings.

Now I was able to be calm and loving for my husband. The next day, his surgery went smoothly, without any complications.

This experience taught me an important and simple spiritual lesson: when your heart is full of love, there is no room for fear.
