The SBC family mourns the loss of our longtime member, Dr. Richard Holmes.

In 1965, Dr. Holmes took a historic step, becoming the first Black student to enroll at Mississippi State University. He went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees there.

In August, the university unveiled a monument on campus in honor of him in the newly named Holmes Plaza.

We honor Dr. Holmes’ life and legacy and are grateful for his courage to pave the way for generations of students to follow.

We pray for comfort and peace for Dr. Holmes’ family, friends and all who hold him dear.

Today, the SBC family remembers and honors the life of our beloved church member, Charles “Lala” Evans.

A trailblazer, community servant, and friend to all, Lala had a bright smile and infectious energy that filled up the room.

He made history as Starkville’s first Black mail carrier, but his service to the community lasted long after his retirement from the U.S. Postal Service.

In 2021, our Youth Ministry produced a video paying tribute to history makers in our church. Of course, Lala was featured! Enjoy this highlight from that video.

We extend heartfelt prayers to Lala’s family and all who love him. We will forever honor his memory and lasting legacy.

Victims of domestic violence often suffer in silence and shame. We want to remove the stigma and talk about it.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and we invite you to join us for our 10:45am service as we share information and resources.

We will have a special presentation during our Sunday, October 11th morning service from the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Together let’s stand in solidarity with survivors and point them toward safety and healing.

What a wonderful tribute to SBC member, Dr. Richard Holmes, on the Mississippi State University campus.

Friday morning, MSU president, Dr. Mark Keenum joined students and staff to cut the ribbon and unveil a monument in the newly named Holmes Plaza.

The space pays tribute to Dr. Holmes’ historic step in 1965 when he became the first Black student to enroll at MSU. He went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

We celebrate this proud moment with Dr. Holmes and thank him for his courage that opened the door for thousands more to follow.
