WHICH ROCK IS OUR FOUNDATION?

Today’s Gospel scene unfolds in Caesarea Philippi, a prominent site in northern Israel. It is most notable as a place of pagan worship before Jesus uses it as a teaching tool for his disciples. The site is overwhelmed by a large rock formation, representing the awesome power of the pagan gods. So, when Jesus turns to Simon and says, “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church…” Jesus is comparing the new rock of our faith in the Son of God to the rock near which they were standing. Our rock of faith is more powerful than anything in this world.

Once we trust Christ as the center of our lives, our true foundation, then nothing we encounter in this world can shake our faith. Simon is the first to acknowledge Jesus as the Son of God; his proclamation prompts Jesus to give Simon a new name, Peter. Peter is also called to be a leader in the community. This mirrors the elevation of Eliakim in the first reading. Eliakim is chosen to take the place of Shebna as advisor to the King, Hezekiah. Peter steps forward as a faithful steward of the faith, one who will announce good news to all God’s children. We, too, are called to be faithful stewards of the mission, opening wide our doors and our hearts to worship, evangelize, and serve all God’s people. God bless you.

WELCOME THE STRANGER

Our scriptures this week encourage us to remember “the foreigners…my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples,” that Paul is “the apostle to the Gentiles,” and Jesus’ answering the prayer of the Canaanite woman, “great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish…and the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.” The thread that is woven through all of it is the glory of God revealed whenever we welcome the stranger in our midst.

Isaiah was preaching during the suffering of the Babylonian exile, encouraging the people of Israel that their return to Jerusalem would be accompanied by folks from the whole diaspora, indeed would include people from the ends of the earth. Paul’s entire mission was to the uncircumcised, those who would not have been included among the first followers of Jesus, the Gentiles from every nation on earth. And Jesus’ was encouraged by the courageous woman who sought his healing power for her daughter even though her family were not among Jews to whom the Gospel was first preached.

The message for us is clear: we must welcome the stranger. This is the first sign of true faith in Jesus, trusting that every human person is a temple of God, carrying the very Spirit of Christ in their heart, in their spirit, in their blood, and in their bones. It is the love of God at work in us which recognizes the face of Christ in every person we meet. God bless you.

TRUSTING THE SILENT WHISPER

We meet Elijah and Peter today, each approaching God and being transformed by the encounter. First Elijah has journeyed from the depths of despair, seeking some sign of hope. After defeating the prophets of Baal, calling down fire from heaven and putting them all to death, Elijah is still cast out of the community; he wants to quit and prays for death. Instead, an angel of God provides him just enough nourishment and instruction for a forty-day pilgrimage to the Mountain of God, Horeb. It is here that Elijah survives the mighty winds, the earthquake, and the fire, then to trust God’s presence in the silent whisper. From that moment Elijah accepts his true purpose and carries out God’s will until he is carried by chariot into the whirlwind.

We meet Peter also amid the winds, this time on the stormy sea where he seeks connection with Jesus. After hearing Jesus’ voice on the waters, Peter seeks confirmation, “command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus wishes Peter had not doubted, yet he grants his request. Once on the sea, with Jesus, Peter panics a bit and clings to Jesus; from that moment of profound connection, Peter’s life will never be the same.

We pray for the capacity to sense God’s love fully present to us, in the silent whisper in the depths of our soul and in the safety we experience in the midst of every storm. We trust that God is with us in every moment of the journey. God bless you.

Witnessing desperate immigrants seeking safety being separated from their children is heartbreaking. Being forced to self-deport because of prejudice is unconscionable. This is not the way.

Please continue to hold James Perkins and his family close in prayer as we commend his soul to the loving mercy of God.

James has deep roots in our faith community, having grown up at St. Nicholas Parish. Although he spent much of his adult life away from St. Louis, his family is bringing him home from New Jersey to be laid to rest among the community that helped nurture his faith.

A Funeral Mass celebrating James’ life and entrusting him to God’s eternal care will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, at Sts. Teresa and Bridget Church. Visitation will begin in the church at 9:00 a.m., followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery.

May the Lord surround James’ family and loved ones with comfort, strength, and peace during this time of sorrow. May they be consoled by the promise of the resurrection and by the love and prayers of our parish community.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

JESUS IS WEARY TOO

Today’s Gospel begins with Jesus grieving the death of his friend, John the Baptist. Jesus first seeks solitude, then ends up surrounded by over 10,000 people, all seeking his wisdom and healing power. Everyone, even God, is vulnerable. From that place of emptiness comes the beautiful multiplication of the loaves and the fishes. When only love remains, love shows up in abundance.

Our true rest is in the company of Christ. Jesus invites us to come and share a meal with him; even his closest disciples are recommending that we be sent away to find food for ourselves. It turns out that Jesus, Christ himself, is our true food. While in the presence of Christ, our appetite for everything else is diminished. We have only a desire for God, which once satisfied, makes us bearers of God’s love to the world.

Right now, the world is hungering for peace amid so much violence, seeking purpose amid so much chaos, and seeking love amid so much desolation. Our prayer is that we can be instruments of Christ’s peace, foundation stones on shaky ground, and compassion in the face of fear. Let our hearts and our doors remain open to worship, evangelize, and serve all God’s people. God bless you.

Please continue to pray for the repose of the soul of our dear parishioner, John Hancock, and for his family and loved ones as they mourn his passing.

John’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 1, at 12:30 PM at Sts. Teresa and Bridget Church.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM, followed by Masonic Funeral Prayers at 12:00 PM.

As we commend John to God’s loving embrace, may we surround his family with prayer, compassion, and support. Let us also be mindful of one another as we grieve the loss of a beloved member of our parish family.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.
