THE SPIRIT IS MOVING

On this powerful Feast of Pentecost, we honor 15 young people who are being baptized and/or receiving their First Holy Communion. There is no more eloquent witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit than a young person excited to express faith in Jesus Christ. We are grateful to God for our beautiful partnership with St. Louis Catholic Academy. They know they are loved by our vibrant faith community, and we know we are blessed by their desire to know Jesus and to respond to the great commandment of love.

Each one of us is a beloved child of God; together, we make up the Body of Christ, which is life for the world. As we prepare to proclaim this Good News in the midst of a troubled world, let us breathe deeply this gift of God that is being given today. This is more real than anything we may hear in the news. God has called each one of us by name. Our love for one another cannot be shaken by the difficulties we face.

Let us once again accept the abundance of gifts being poured into our hearts as we strive to respond to the call of Saint Josephine Bakhita by opening wide our doors and hearts to worship, evangelize, and serve all God’s people.

God bless you.

Saint Josephine Bakhita, you are with us.

ASCENDING INTO THE DEPTHS

On this Feast of the Ascension of Christ, I invite us to let go of the image of Jesus ascending into heaven. The image of Jesus disappearing from the sight of the disciples, “He was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight,” does not mean Jesus was lifted higher and higher into the atmosphere. When the two dressed in white garments ask, “Why are you standing there looking at the sky?” we most often see their question as an encouragement to get about the work of proclaiming the Kingdom. What if it is actually an encouragement to understand where Jesus has really gone: “Jesus…will return in the same way you have seen him going to heaven”?

The whole story of heaven above, hell below, and us here suffering until we go up or down does not match well with the truth of God’s love revealed in the Gospel. The truth is that Jesus has departed from our physical presence and has sent the Holy Spirit to reveal the presence of God dwelling within us and all around us. We are invited to participate in the very life of God, to continue the works of love that Jesus taught us, and to transform this troubled world of ours into the very Kingdom of God. Along the way, descending into darkness leads to light. Ascending into heaven brings us into a deeper connection with the earth. Falling in love lifts us up. Rising to new heights sends us into the abyss to confront our fears.

Descending is not a downer, and ascending is not about traveling up. Both the movement of descending and the movement of ascending carry us deeper into the heart of Christ, deeper in love with one another, and deeper in relationship with all of creation. Let us ascend with Christ into God’s glory. God bless you.

Saint Josephine Bakhita, you are with us.
