Deaconess Anne House

Deaconess Anne House Deaconess Anne House is a service year community of young adults living, praying, and serving in Old North St. Louis as part of the Episcopal Service Corps.

Deaconess Anne House, the St. Louis branch of the Episcopal Service Corps (episcopalservicecorps.org), was founded in 2013. Since then, young adults in their twenties have come to serve in our amazing city and live together in an intentional Christian community based in Benedictine spirituality. Corps members serve 32 hours per week with one of our incredible non-profit placement sites and grow with one another through prayer and action.

When ended the year with a budget surplus, they granted all the Episcopal worshiping communities with $1,000 to use for outreach. The 9.0 corps members incorporated these funds into their end of the year praxis project, which had many parts. One part was to create a beside the for folks to enjoy and stay a while to be rejuvenated. They purchased, sanded, stained, and came up with a simple design for this picnic table reststop. The Director put on the finishing touches this week and left the table accessible for neighbors to enjoy. May it be a place for rest, rejuvenation, and conversation! Funds from the art auction also went to purchasing supplies for the Little Free Pantry that will be distributed throughout this coming year. All are invited to give what you can so others can take what they need.

The community contributed the remaining outreach funds, about $700, to the the Emory Washington Convocation’s campaign to !

The campaign is operated through RIP Medical Debt (https://ripmedicaldebt.org/) a New York based nonprofit started by former debt collectors. It uses donations to purchase the unpaid medical debt of low-income families for pennies on the dollar to abolish the debt. $1 purchases and cancels $100 worth of debt.

*Medical debt is the number one cause of bankruptcy in the U.S.
*Medical debt is one of the leading causes of financial instability for low-income families
*Debt relief provides a unique solution that strengthens individuals and families while reducing the stress on the healthcare system
*Debt relief brings attention to the moral bankruptcy of a healthcare system that punishes people for seeking adequate care.
*It’s also an embodied enactment of the prayer “forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.”

You can visit https://ripmedicaldebt.org/campaign/episcopal-medical-debt-forgiveness-campaign/ to make a donation toward the convocation’s goal of raising $26,000 which will cancel more than 2.5 million dollars of debt.

And with a lot of shared meals, laughter, and even some tears between the Share Back Day, Last Eucharist, and a Closing Retreat at the river, our 9.0 corps members have gone through DisOrientation and are sent with so many prayers and love into their next chapters. Thank you to all those across the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri who supported, befriended, and mentored these young adults this year. It takes a diocese.

And a final note from and farewell to corps member Krista! We continue to hold your discernment in our prayers as you do another Episcopal Service Corps year in Seattle! Go with God, Krista!

“I came into this year not knowing what to expect. I was excited to start a year of service, and I knew Deaconess Anne House was a great program with lots of connections to the community, but I couldn’t know how much it would change me. I’ve learned a lot this year. I’ve learned how to cope when things don’t go the way I expect, but I’ve also learned how nice it is to have work that I really find meaningful. I’m especially proud of my culminating project, a paper about the history of LGBTQ+ women at Trinity Episcopal - St. Louis. The community here, and the friendships I’ve formed, have helped me to grow. I’ve also had a lot of fun just living in St. Louis. I enjoyed living somewhere with fireflies and cicadas for the first time in my life. After leaving DAH, I’ll go back to visit my parents in Spokane, Washington and then in August I plan to start another year of service with the Seattle Service Corps.”

Our 9.0 corps members are going forth to continue their discernment, seeking always to respond faithfully for how God is calling them to be in the world! We are so proud of them and grateful for what each brought to this program year. We will highlight a farewell for each one. Next is Re*****on!

“My experience this year has been filled with connections. This year has made me feel comfortable enough with St Louis to stay here permanently. Which is saying something because I haven't lived in one place for more than eleven months since 2018!

As far as what I'm taking away, it is definitely the fact that connections can make all the difference in your life. I've found I love to go out and have a good time with a friend, as opposed to going or being alone.

What's next? Well, I'm staying in St Louis until I don't know when. I've been hired on at my placement site, St Vincent Home for Children, as their new office manager. I'm also planning to try and go out more with my new found connections. 🙂”

Go with God, Re*****on!

“I thought, when starting this year, that I had a pretty good sense of what a service year would look like. I was right about the buzzwords (community, growth, spirituality), but had no idea how completely it would transform me. This year has pushed me so much deeper into relationships with others, with myself, and with God. It’s made me stay in relationship when it’s hard, made me know myself way more, and made me just stand in awe at all the ways God is showing up in the communities I’ve been a part of this year. There are so many things I’ll be carrying with me going forward, but most importantly, I’m leaving with a sense of deep gratitude for everyone I’ve interacted with who has taught me, in words or actions, who God is and how God acts. Next year, I’ll be working in Seattle for 10 months while applying to seminary, and will hopefully be off to seminary in the fall of 2023!”

Go with God, Megan!

Our 9.0 corps members are going forth to continue their discernment in the world, seeking always to respond faithfully for how God is calling them to be in the world! We are so proud of them and grateful for what each brought to this program year. We will highlight a farewell for each one. First up is Erin!

“Some of my favorite parts of this year included serving at The Rockwell House Campus Ministry, helping host backyard diners and Eucharists at DAH, spending Friday mornings in Chapter Meeting, and going on runs around and . From my housemates, people at Trinity Episcopal - St. Louis, and people around the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri diocese, I've learned that there are so many ways of showing God's love to others. I've learned how valuable listening can be in building community, and I also feel more grounded in my own faith. After leaving DAH, I'll be heading home to Buffalo to visit family before moving to Mississippi, where I'll be joining a great Episcopal Church community and starting a new job as a software engineer in August.”

Go with God, Erin!

Honoring our namesake, by crowding up one whole pew for our last time worshiping together at our host church, Trinity Episcopal - St. Louis. It’s been real special, y’all. 🙏❤️

Heading into our last days at placement sites and then closing retreat! 🥹😭

Also, corps member Krista presented on her final (23 page!!) paper from her time serving in the Trinity archives researching the history of LGBT and Q***r Women at Trinity! She did great and there was an incredible turn out in support.
