Tuesday, May 14, 2024: Matthias
Today’s biblical word is a name: Matthias. On May 14 of each year, the Church celebrates the feast of the Apostle Saint Matthias. What does the Bible tell us about this pillar of the Church?
1. Matthias was a disciple of the Lord. To replace Judas and thus complete the number of twelve Apostles representing the twelve tribes of Israel, the Christian community presented to the Apostles two candidates, Joseph called Barsabbas, also known as Justus, and Matthias. These two men were disciples of Christ. They accompanied Jesus from his baptism in the Jordan until his ascension into heaven (Cf. Acts 1:21-22). As a disciple, Matthias was in the school of Christ. He listened to him, he loved him and he allowed himself to be transformed by Jesus. Nothing could shake him out of his convictions. He followed Jesus from start to finish.
2. Matthias was presented by the community and chosen by God. As much as it is true that it is God who calls everyone to serve Him, it is also important to emphasize the role of human mediation for the realization of God's plan. The community presented two candidates according to their human appreciation, but it was God who made the choice, answering the prayer of his people. The Church is God’s institution in the hands of imperfect people. Even though he was a disciple of Jesus, Matthias was not a perfect man. He was chosen, not because he was already perfect, but because God wanted to perfect him through the mission He entrusted to him. God calls us where we are and as we are, sometimes through others. We just need to pay attention to the signs of the times and discover his voice.
3. Matthias was an Apostle. When the lot fell on Matthias, he was added to the eleven Apostles (Acts 1,26). An apostle, from the Greek word “apostolos,” is an envoy, the one who is sent. Numbered among the pillars of the Church founded by Jesus, Matthias was an envoy, a missionary, charged with announcing the Good News of salvation. To him apply the words of Jesus to the other Apostles: It was not you who chose me, it was I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain (John 15:16).
Like Matthias, all Christians, by virtue of baptism, are disciples of the Lord, presented by the Church and chosen by God, then consecrated and sent by Jesus to proclaim the Good News of salvation. Let us all embrace our different vocations with joy and confidence in the grace of the Lord who does not call the perfect, but rather the imperfect in order to perfect them. With God’s grace, we will bear fruit like Matthias.
Have a blessed day !
