Absolutely. He WANTS you to come to Him. Your avoidance in the little things, the distance created by trying to figure it out on your own--it's not making you stronger. When you turn to Him for even the "little" things, He doesn't respond with disappointment--He provides faithful care and deeper security.

Maybe God hasn't brought you to the end of yourself because He is careless or cruel. Maybe, by letting you feel overwhelmed and burned out, He is allowing you to feel the crushing weight of holding on to things that will never bring you what you truly need. Maybe what you're feeling actually is the Lord making space for the peace and simplicity you've been asking for...but you haven't let go of the things that are killing you. Maybe that's why it hurts so bad.

It's ok to choose to let go and rest in Him.

We all struggle with identity. This is why in counseling, I generally start with identity work. No one has told me that identity is the "issue", but it always comes up. We want to start with anger or anxiety or trauma or relationships. Now please hear me say that those things matter! BUT...How can we heal from the things that are slowly killing us if we don't know that we are going into that fight accepted, redefined, and un-alone? Knowing who and whose we are, as believers, changes everything.

One of the things I love about my job is that I get to sit at the foot of the cross with my clients as God reveals His character during session. The kindness and complexity of that is hard for me to wrap my mind around. And at the same time, I don't know why I am still surprised that He continues to show up and be the God He has always been! He tells us over and over that He doesn't leave and gives us what we need, including providing loving reminders to us about who He truly is. He really is the Wonderful Counselor.

Yes. God is not like us. He uses it all and gives meaning. Even our pain. With the Lord, our pain doesn't have to just stay pain--it always gets turned for something more.
"As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today." Genesis 50:20

God often does His most profound work in seasons we would never choose. If you're walking through difficulty today, remember that He is present, purposeful, and faithful.

As a Biblical counselor, reading the Word is a key intervention both in sessions and through assigned "homework". This is because God's word is alive and active. It isn't lost on me that Bible study is HARD. There are so many underlying issues that we have to battle before we even open the Bible! Here are some issues that I have struggled with when studying:

I don't understand what this is saying.
I don't know how to study.
It's hard to find time with the other demands of life.
There are distractions everywhere.
I don't really want to do it.

See what I mean? It's hard! Like this morning--I have every intention to go deep in study because I have been given a VERY unusual kid-free morning; I want to use the time well. I make my plan and set off. Plans A & B for study were a bust. So, I go to Plan C. I get re-settled. I am so thankful for the time and I am prepared...and the lawn crew at this location starts mowing, stirring up dirt and grass which get blown all over me, on the pages of my Bible, in my mouth--everywhere. I tried to just power through. Then, the dirt on my pages makes my pen stop working.

Initially, I was frustrated; then I started laughing out of the craziness of this situation. Then this truth hit me--God's Word is every bit as fruitful and He is just as honored through my intention and actions taken to rest in and study His Word, whether it's 3 verses or 100 chapters, whether I have dust and grass in my mouth or not.

Friend, let that speak louder than your reasons "why not" today. God sees your heart. He sees your struggle. Do it even when it's hard. He meets you there--dirt, grass, broken pen and all.

I have had a hymn that I grew up with stuck in my head for the past week--"He Keeps Me Singing". Do you know it? If you do, you know that an upbeat, chipper melody is the background of these lyrics. But I think that this song sung in more of a minor key is more fitting. That seems to match more of life, doesn't it? I think there's a temptation for happiness to be the only emotion that can accompany sweetness with Jesus. But, that's not true. If this is where you are today, you are not alone. Your cry sung in a minor key is just as sweet to Him as the one with an upbeat melody.
