The video quality is poor (circa 2018), but the message has never been clearer. Our kids are always watching us, even when we don’t see. We are their guides for how to act, think, and feel from the time they’re born. This video memory was a wake up call to me because it’s easy to forget.
Especially as we move into a holiday season filled with food, clothing, family, and societal pressures it’s more important than ever to remember that how we talk about ourselves, food, our bodies, and others may have a lasting impact on our kids’ views of themselves, others, and the world.
🍎🍯Practical Tips for a happy and healthy holiday:
➡️Things to leave out of conversations:
- “Wow! You lost so much weight!” “You look so skinny!”
- “I can’t believe I’m eating all this garbage!”
- “I’m going to have to do a cleanse after this holiday.”
- “She is TOTALLY on Ozempic!”
- “Oh honey maybe you shouldn’t eat so many cookies! You want to fit in your outfit tomorrow!”
➡️Things to say instead:
- “Shana Tova u’mesuka!”
- “I LOVE your dress! You look so happy in it.”
- “Let’s enjoy these delicious honey cookies, AND let’s make sure to eat some other foods that help us grow, stay full, and stay energized so we can feel our best.”
- (sees woman on Ozempic) “Hi! It’s so nice to see you!”
Wishing us all a sweet and TRULY HEALTHY new year! 🍎🍯🫶🏻
