Liberia Celebrates First Major Cassava Harvest Under RETRAP Cluster Farms!
Big things are happening in Liberia’s agriculture sector — and our farmers are leading the way!
The Ministry of Agriculture, through its Rural Economic Transformation Project (RETRAP), has celebrated a bumper cassava harvest in Pokundu, Grand Cape Mount County — the first of four pilot cassava cluster farms transforming farming from subsistence to commercial production.
In 2024, tractors rolled in.
320 hectares were mechanized and prepared.
50 farmers per cluster organized.
80 hectares per farm cultivated.
Expected output: 1,600 metric tons of cassava per cluster!
This is what transformation looks like.
Speaking on behalf of Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, Deputy Minister for Planning and Development Mr. David K. Akoi called the harvest a turning point:
“Today’s harvest marks a turning point in our efforts to transform agriculture from subsistence farming into a commercially driven sector that creates income, jobs, and opportunity for rural communities.”
Through RETRAP, farmers are now working in organized clusters, benefiting from shared infrastructure, improved technologies, and stronger market access. From Pokundu to Kakata, Todee to Zansue — the results are visible, measurable, and inspiring.
RETRAP’s National Project Coordinator, Mr. Galah Toto, praised the farmers’ hard work:
“If you had not worked hard, we would not be seeing such big cassava tubers today. We hope to continue in 2026, exploring new areas to expand cassava production across the country.”
And the momentum doesn’t stop there.
The Country Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Liberia, Dr. Agbessi Komla Amewoa, reaffirmed WFP’s commitment to buying locally grown produce:
“Liberia has the potential to feed itself.”
Since 2023, WFP has not imported food for its operations in Liberia. Through the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, WFP purchases from 15,000 smallholder farmers, feeding 80,000 schoolchildren with food grown right here at home.
“When you produce more, WFP can buy more, and together we strengthen Liberia’s pathway to full food self-sufficiency.”
This harvest is more than cassava.
It’s income for families.
It’s an opportunity for rural communities.
It’s proof that agriculture is the backbone of Liberia’s economic transformation.
Liberia is growing. Liberia is producing. Liberia is feeding itself.
