Albuquerque YAV Program

Albuquerque YAV Program Young Adult Volunteer Program, located in Albuquerque, NM
Presbytery of Santa Fe
217 Locust Street,
Albuquerque, NM 87107

The ABQ Young Adult Volunteer program gives young adults the opportunity to experience New Mexico’s historic convergence of Native American, Hispanic and Anglo communities. Living in Albuquerque, YAVs experience the beauty of the high desert and Sandia Mountains juxtaposed with the high levels of poverty and daily challenges faced by many New Mexicans. Volunteers work with a variety of local nonpr

ofit organizations engaged in education, outreach and social justice, while learning about and building relationships with diverse communities across New Mexico.
ABQ YAV is a site of the Young Adult Volunteer Program of the PC (USA).

This past weekend was our final retreat of the 2022-2023 ABQYAV program year, in the beautiful Gila Wilderness. Allison, Emma, and YAVA housemate Savannah had time to relax, reflect, and enjoy time together to wrap up their YAV experience in New Mexico.

We are so grateful that Allison and Emma have spent this past year with us in ABQ, for the gifts and talents they have shared, for the spirit of curiosity and openness they've demonstrated. As Emma heads to Texas, and Allison prepares for a new chapter in ABQ, we say THANK YOU to you both!

This weekend, ABQYAV was invited (along with our friends at Tucson Borderlands YAV) to a meeting of the Synod of the Southwest to share updates from the YAV program, and think about ways to collaborate together! ABQYAV alum Savannah Gold shared how her YAV year impacted her, and how she saw the ripples of the YAV program impact the broader community. Thanks for sharing , and thanks to for the invitation and ongoing partnership!

This weekend the ABQYAVs had a Lenten Silent Retreat at the Norbertine Center! This incredible retreat space in the South Valley offers numerous spaces to enjoy solitude, whether exploring the trails, sitting in any of the beautiful chapels, or walking the meditative labyrinth. Throughout their silence (and the struggle to just "be"), Emma and Allison were reminded: "You are beloved not because of what you do, what you make, or what youaccomplish, but simply because of whoyou are as a beloved child of God."

📍The Norbertine Community rests on the unceded ancestral lands of the Puebloan peoples, including both the Tiwa and Piro tribes.

This week's community day took the ABQYAVs to the Coronado Historic site. These ancient Tiwa pueblo ruins sit on a beautiful bluff overlooking the Rio Grande, with the Sandia Mountains in the distance. Coronado site marks the area where Francisco Vasquez de Coronado (the guy looking for the Cities of Gold) found/was found by the Tiwa peoples, Puebloan communities that had lived in the area for thousands of years.

Our reconnecting retreat was a great success! We were able to enjoy Incredible hikes to connect us to the land, visit a wonderful Presbytery church that supports us, and still have time to laugh together and dream for the months ahead.

Coming back from the holidays is an important time for ABQYAVs to spend time together in intentional community, sharing about their experiences back home while dreaming and setting goals for the rest of their time in New Mexico. The view from Chimney Rock is a great place to hang out, too.

📍Ghost Ranch rests on the ancestral lands of the Puebloan and Ute peoples.
