Did you know The Gypsy Queen is buried in Oakwood Cemetery?

Lena Miller came to Sharon in 1921 to tell fortunes. The wife of the king of a gypsy tribe from Chicago died of pneumonia on May 10, 1921 while she was in town for a carnival. More than 1,000 people from across the country attended her funeral at the carnival grounds at Clark Street and Sharpsville Avenue. School was even canceled for the day. About 5,000 people crowded into our cemetery for her burial ritual. Gypsies threw coins on her grave and she was buried with gold and jewelry. For two to three months, the gypsies kept a guard posted to her grave 24 hours a day. Today visitors still toss a coin or leave a strand of beads at her grave-site.
