Feeling embraced by the Winter season can bring up a lot of emotions. ❄️ We’ve been sitting in the cold for a bit now, and have a little ways to go. This is an amazing time to explore self care techniques that help us unearth our emotions, formulate our thoughts, and tap into a space of healing.

One way we can do this is through the practice of journaling. 📔 ✏️Humans have been journaling since far before scientific research began highlighting its benefits. The oldest known diary is from 161 AD! Writing forces us to organize our thoughts into a cohesive story allowing us to create a clearer path towards new discoveries within ourselves. The cathartic act of journaling can help boost our immune systems, improve our moods, and regulate our emotions. 🌀It increases our working memory capacity which allows us to do multiple things at once and strengthens our cognitive processing!

Writing helps us focus on specific thoughts or emotions and identify triggers. It’s a safe space to release tension in your body and work out issues you’ve been ruminating on. It can even reduce inflammation and alleviate chronic pain ❗️

This may be your sign to get back into journaling or try it out for your first time. We recommend picking a topic, setting a timer for 20 minutes, and seeing what comes out. Don’t worry about staying focused on one thing. Let your mind naturally flow from one thought to the next, and release what’s inside. A consistent practice will produce magic ✨

Living with compassion is about showing up for both yourself and those around you. 🌀 Compassion is about honoring your needs, holding space for others, and remaining present and kind in the midst of suffering.

Compassion is a word that gets thrown around a lot. While people often use it as a self-describing adjective, it can be better used as a practice. Practicing compassion allows you to connect more deeply to yourself and your loved ones. If you regularly offer compassion to yourself it strengthens your compassion for others.

How do you energize your compassion? Do you support yourself with self-care regimens such as movement, nourishing food, and rest. 🧘‍♂️ Do you practice mindfulness meditation? Do you volunteer your time to those in need?

Compassion comes in many forms and looks a little different in each of us.

Sanctuary of the Inner Compass offers a space to share these practices, learn from our peers, and share our experiences. We love connecting with our hosts and guests and seeing how we can learn compassion from each other 💕

Check out our upcoming retreats through our link tree to see how you can connect with yourself and others ✨

Imagine wandering the woods and stumbling upon an old desk with a prompt “Supplies are in the drawers - sit down and write the letter you haven’t written yet.” What would you write? Who would you write to? 📝

The Writer’s Desk in the Woods was inspired by CEO of Everland, . He had a vision of an inviting desk filled with pens, paper, stamps—everything you needed to compose a letter, right there in the middle of the woods. The WORD project was an addition to the Writers Desk in order to complete this literary inspired zone, and was created by our Inner Compass community and staff. “In the beginning was the WORD…”

Words, both positive and negative, can be constructive or damaging to our attitudes towards life. Positive words encourage positive brain function. 🧠They can improve our ability to cope with difficult things and regulate stress. Words can affect our mood and actions, which allows them to indirectly affect our reality.

On the other hand, using negative words such as telling yourself something is catastrophic, even when joking or acting consciously hyperbolic, can activate your sympathetic nervous system, or “fight or flight.” This can cause feelings of dread, hopelessness, or anxiety.

Your words can affect other people in the same light. Choosing words of encouragement and positivity when interacting with those around you can brighten moods, stimulate productivity, and generate a gratifying outlook on life.

Books, letters, and conversations all contain words that change our world. 😌 As we go through life and interact with those around us, let’s be sure to choose our words wisely.

Abundance! We do enough, we have enough, we are enough.

Sometimes it can be so easy to slip into a scarcity mindset and always feel like we need more. Scarcity mindset tricks us into taking the people we love for granted, feeling dissatisfied with our lives, or wishing things were BIGGER, BETTER.

Living with abundance allows us to appreciate the small things. 🌱 It shows us beauty where we might not expect. It shines a warm light on the people we love. It teaches us how to honor our bodies, minds, and souls. We can learn so much when we stop worrying about what we don’t have and focus on everything that is right in front of us.

Practicing gratitude is a widely researched method for improving mental and physical health. Our gratitude spiral is the perfect place to breathe, receive, and renew 🌀

“What you believe is what you receive!” -Caroline Castrillon

Live in a mindset of abundance! And see where it takes you ✨

There is immense value in creating alignment between the moon’s cycles and our life’s cadence 🌕 Research has shown that behaviors such as activity, reproduction, eating, photosensitivity, migration and molting are also aligned with the lunar calendar.

Take advantage of the third annual offering of the Moon Calendar, created by a group of women gathered across diverse cultures and backgrounds around the world.

The intention of this calendar is to help you easily organize your time around the moon phases, shifting into a cyclical way of living that honors internal rest and stillness as much as external output and productivity ✨

Instead of a standard 12-month calendar, this Moon Calendar organizes each “month” by moon cycles that begin with the date of each new moon, waxing into the full moon and waning into the dark moon (about 29.6 days), before it flips to the next moon cycle (and new moon).

🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓🌔

This Moon Calendar offers wisdom from different cultures, astrological journaling prompts, lunar quotes and suggestions, original artworks, and inspiring writings from the 15 different women artists who collaborated to bring this calendar to life.

The theme of this year’s calendar is WATER, 🌊 which was chosen to honor the non-profit beneficiary of this year’s fundraiser, Atitlán Water Protectors.

All proceeds support cleaning the waters of Lake Atitlán, Guatemala.

Don’t miss this opportunity to get your calendar! Follow the link pictured here!

Did you know only humans possess the cognitive function needed to recognize music in its entirety? 🎶 While music is a core experience for us, most animals only contain the ability to perceive certain aspects of music, for example, rhythm or melody.

In contrast, only humans can piece together all the components to interpret its whole sound.

Music is healing, unifying, and emotional ✨ We can use music as a tool to sit with sadness and process difficult times. We can connect with others through music, sharing it, analyzing it, and loving it together🌀It’s one of the things that separates us from other animals, making it an entirely human experience.

Have you seen these GLOW UP photos of our bathrooms??
✨SWIPE TO SEE!✨

Our new bathrooms were beautifully crafted by Victor Rivera. All the wood used was salvaged from our own property, in alignment with our ethos of upcycling 🪵whenever possible.

These stalls are the true epitome of “rest” rooms and we are so grateful to be able to bring Victor’s beautiful additions to our guests 💫

Previously, the retreat center building was a Korean Christian Ministry built in the 80’s. We have spent the past 3 years updating the roof, floors, paint, furnishings, and it was only a matter of time before these bathrooms got a facelift. These updates reflect the rustic yet modern and worldly design. The bathrooms feature hammered copper basins in one and hand carved Moroccan brass sinks in the other, with spaces for guests to store their items during their stay complimented by Geometric Wood Art and preserved moss.

The ongoing process of curating our retreat center atmosphere to be the ideal place for guests to rest and recharge has been an exciting process.
Next up: the kitchen! 🛠

Victor Rivera is an artist/designer/builder, based in Colorado, who specializes in using reclaimed materials in his work. He also designs and builds large-scale art installations and stages for the music/entertainment industry, working in recent years with collectives such as Meow Wolf. Victor is also working to develop an art-sustainability-education focused community retreat called, New Sky Ranch, based in the San Luis Valley. He was the perfect person to take on these upgrades for the Inner Compass!

“I’m so grateful and humbled to get to bring these improvements to life, and be a part of the Inner Compass’s vision and story. I absolutely loved working with the whole crew, and am looking forward to creating more with the Inner Compass family!”

Come see these glorious bathrooms in person! Check out our retreats page on our website to find the perfect getaway for you 🌀

Calling all creators!

We are in search of some new wall art to beautify our retreat center and help you sell your pieces! We want to show off your work to create a peaceful, healing, and inspiring environment for our guests. Our guests often decide to take a reminder of their retreat time home with them, and we love supporting our artists.

Themes that focus on nature, wellness, self-discovery and spirit are often a good match. 😊

Artwork of any size is accepted and must be ready to hang with wire. Send an email to [email protected] if you think you’re a good fit. There is no deadline to apply.

Thank you for contributing to our mission to co-create a space for connection through art, nature, and play. We are foreseeing magic with this next round of art ✨ and are so excited to see what you have to share
