As many of you know by now, this past Friday, Mike Stevens, a great man of God, went home to be with his Savior Jesus Christ. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, and he kept the faith. Now there is in store for him the crown of righteousness, and I know that Jesus has told him, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Come and share your master’s happiness!”
While we rejoice that Mike is with Christ, it is also a time of mourning for his family and those of us who cared deeply about him. Please lift up Rita and the rest of the family in prayer now and in the next several months ahead.
Three years ago, when Mike was first diagnosed with cancer, his son Jeremy collected a bunch of letters from individuals whose lives had been greatly impacted by Mike. Jeremy gave those letters to his dad to remind him of the impact he’s had on so many people in our community for the Kingdom of God.
I was one of those individuals.
New Creation exists because of a father’s love for his son and the vision his son had for our community and incarcerated men battling addiction.
I wanted to share the letter I wrote for Mike with all of you as a testimony to Mike’s faithfulness in following Jesus. Every word still rings as true today as it did when I wrote it three years ago.
Dear Mike,
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. May this letter find you with great peace, joy, and encouragement.
You’ve become a father to me through the gospel of Jesus Christ, which means more to me than words can ever express. You are someone that I look up to, someone that I’m proud of, and someone I have a great deal of respect for.
You welcomed me as family from day one and showed me grace, mercy, and love at a time in my life when there was no one and I didn’t know what those things meant. When I see you, I see Jesus. A man of compassion and commitment to the Lord.
There are two things I know for sure about you: one, bed time is 8 o’clock, and, two, if you’re driving somewhere and we’re supposed to leave at 6:00 and I show up at 6:01, I’m driving myself.
One of the stories I tell often, especially to the guys in the jail, is about when you made the decision to get serious about the Lord in the church parking lot, with Rita in the passenger seat and Jeremy, Justin, and Jeff in the back. You put your arm on the back of the seat, turned your head, and told the boys that from now on the Stevens family would be at church Wednesday night, Sunday morning, and any other day those doors were unlocked. The boys grumbled and said, “Aww, come on, Dad,” but you held firm.
That story had a profound impact on me. Whenever I think about the multiplication effect, it reminds me of that decision you made in the parking lot. It had a huge impact on your family, which in turn enabled your family to have a major effect on the lives of people around them in our community and in the workplace. The Stevens family has definitely made an impact in our community for the Gospel.
I can’t help but wonder if you hadn’t made that decision in the parking lot, would New Creation Ministries be here today? Apart from raising your boys to know the Lord, your persistence and determination to ask for money in the middle of a recession, to not give up when people laughed and told you to your face that you were an idiot, but your willingness to follow the Lord’s leading—you did it anyway. You listened to God and trusted Him to work everything out. A perfect example of walking by faith and not by sight. (2 Cor. 5:7.)
New Creation has ministered to hundreds of men over the years, and continues to do so. I’m thankful to have been one of those men. If it wasn’t for you and Jeremy, my family wouldn’t have the life we have today.
Through the years I’ve watched how you love your wife as Christ loves the church, as well as how you love your sons, daughters-in-law, and all your grandchildren. You are a man of integrity, and when you say you’re going to commit to something, you give it 110% every time. You’ve showed me what it looks like to be a man of God, a leader, and a man of commitment.
You’ve showed me what it looks like to be a man honest to his employer, a hard worker, and a man committed to the church. You’ve showed me what it looks like to be a man of prayer and a
man whose faith in the Lord never wavers, no matter what your circumstances. And I think most of all, you’ve showed me how to treat everyone the same. You’ve never met a stranger, and the
way you’ve loved me throughout the years is how you’ve loved everybody, whether you know them or not.
Over the years there have been times I’ve thought, “If Mike can love that guy, I can love him too.”
You’ve blessed our family through the years, your home has always been open, and if I ever needed to borrow anything, you told me that if you had it, I was welcome to borrow it.
Mike, you’ve always encouraged me, but there are three things that mean more to me than you’ll ever know. One, you’ve always called me ‘son’; two, you’ve always told me you loved me; and, three, you’ve always told me you’re proud of me. Love, affirmation, and confirmation. I’ve never heard my biological dad tell me he loves me or that he’s proud of me. I’m extremely grateful for you.
When I think about you, Titus 2:6-8 comes to mind. “Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show
integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.”
Thank you for your faithfulness in being a follower of Jesus Christ and pointing other to the cross.
Love,
Tim
P.S. Look out your kitchen window—I think there’s a mole in your front yard.
