A Promise of Peace
I was fascinated by my kids’ papers and drawings they had done a few days ago. They were clearly learning about the great humanist and civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today, so often when we think of Dr. King, we think immediately of the needs and rights for African Americans. What many forget was that Dr. King held the basic tenant of human rights for all of us. All of us. When we look to his work, he wanted everyone – regardless color, creed or gender to all have the same basic rights as any one else. He was an equal opportunist freedom fighter long before we had a commission to govern such discriminatory practices. From women, Jews, to the victims of war… he strove for a peaceful world; a world of equality; a world of non-violence and social justice.
So it is not such of a stretch to integrate our own heritage with our children when we celebrate the great leaders.
