Mission San Gabriel pauses with deep gratitude to honor and remember the brave men and women of the military who made the ultimate sacrifice for us and our country. As you walk through our historic grounds and peaceful gardens today, we invite you to take a quiet moment of reflection to hold these heroes in your prayers. Wishing our Mission community a peaceful, grateful, and blessed Memorial Day.

In commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, Pope Leo XIV has proclaimed a special Jubilee Year and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has designated Mission San Gabriel Arcángel Church as an official pilgrimage site. Founded on September 8, 1771, under the Presidency of Saint Junipero Serra, Mission San Gabriel was established by Fray Cambon, OFM, and Fray Somera, OFM, along the banks of what we now know as the San Gabriel River. We invite all to visit our pilgrimage site as we celebrate this special jubilee year.

Look who’s showing off her Spring Green!
May your days be many and your troubles few. May all God’s blessings descend upon you. May peace be within you, may your heart be strong. May you find what you’re seeking whenever you roam. May the strength of God pilot us, may the wisdom of God instruct us. May the hand of God protect us, may the word of God direct us. May by Salvation, oh Lord, be always our this day and for evermore. Amen.

The historical connections between China’s Qing Dynasty and the might not be obvious ones, but a study of the vestments at Mission San Gabriel reveal that trade routes in the 17th century brought silk to Alta California.

Beginning in the 16th century, Chinese artisans weaved, embroidered, and painted patterns on silk cloth used for Catholic liturgical purposes.  With information from Mission San Gabriel’s annual report in 1783, this red painted silk taffeta chasuble was brought from China by Fray Pedro Benito Cambón.

In 2022, during the fire restoration work, four niches along the north facing wall of Mission San Gabriel Church revealed themselves as the crew scraped away burned and charred plaster. Of the four niches, only two were opened up. Interestingly enough, the niches were filled with a layer of rock and stone topped with large adobe bricks that could have been placed there sometime in the mid-to-late 1800’s. Those same adobe bricks were used to reinforce and restore balance to the pedestal in the baptistery that holds the original hand-hammered copper baptismal font brought by the Franciscan priests in 1771. The pedestal was thought to be made of cement but flooding to the baptistery area revealed that the cement top was only a “cap” and that beneath the cap were original large, rectangular, adobe bricks. camissionhistory 21camission camissiontours missionsangabriel SGV sgvtours

Mission San Gabriel’s campus now holds only three remaining original structures that were constructed during the Mission Era: the Old Mission Church which was constructed between 1795 and 1809, the sacristy that is directly attached to the Church, and the convento which now serves as the Museum. Of the three, the Sacristy is the only room that boasts a beautiful barrel-vaulted ceiling. During the restoration, the restoration core team had to devise a way to bring in electrical wiring, audio, and WiFi. The crew had to core their way through almost 6 feet of rock and stone to do so. If you haven’t already done so, come visit Mission San Gabriel Church and witness the enginuity that was created 230 years ago.
