Istay chiyoy to Many Moons Festival for having us for their inaugural festival! We had such a fun time with our Asian, South East Asian, and Pasifika cousins. From vending, to the indigenous attire fashion show, to singing and demoing — we had an absolute BLAST this past weekend. This was certainly one for the books. We are so proud to represent all that we have learned and shared over the years. Here’s to many more to come!

It’s time for our second round of weaving workshops with at !

Last week, we covered the foundational history of Kalinga weaving and made pitipit (thread balls) and demonstrated how to gelay (warp the loom).

This week, each student will help each other begin their own gelay! For those who are extra savvy, they may begin their sakyot (or the backstrap loom version of sleighing the reed).

This is perhaps one of the biggest undertakings for new learners - wish us luck!

Our first workshop in the series was such a fund day of introductions and warm personal stories. We learned the basics of Kalinga weaving history and terms, we sang together, and today, we’ll be warping together!

There are still some spots left in the Kalinga series so please reach out and check the QR code!

Over the years, the Alliance for California Traditional Arts has been a major supporter of the work that Kalingafornia Laga does. Tonight, we are proud to participate in the ACTA Round Table Artist Series happening from 6-8pm! If you haven’t RSVP’d already, we hope you’re able to snag a seat. We’ll be sharing about our experiences in the ACTA programs — from being Living Cultures awardees, to receiving Master-Apprenticeship intensives — each of these programs have been crucial to our development and impact as a circle. We’ll do some sharing about our experiences, followed by a short weaving demo. Manlaga Tako! We hope to see you there!

Join us in San Francisco on Monday, June 10, 2024, from 6–8 PM for an evening of art sharing and conversation with ACTA’s Apprenticeship and Living Cultures awardees, including members of Kalingafornia Laga, a weaving collective of Pilipinx-American women, Chavalos de Aquí y Allá, an organization that will share about their work in Nicaraguan traditional dance, and Pezhham Akhavass, a master Iranian percussionist of Tombak (Persian Goblet Drum). We’ll also have an info session about our funding opportunities for 2024. Refreshments will be served.
