Day 23 - God’s Chosen People: Identity
I Peter 2: 9-10 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
In these two verse, God gives us a snapshot, a succinct understanding of what it means to be His people. What is our identity as those who belong to God?
Notice first of all the four images he describes.
• A chosen people. So who is it that did the choosing?
• A royal priesthood. Who made you royalty?
• A holy nation. Who is it that made you holy?
• God’s special possession. Who made you a special possession?
GOD did it all!
Do you notice that those are all communal terms? What this is saying is that for you to experience the Gospel, you are brought into a new people. Until you are brought “in” through the person and work of Jesus Christ, your previous state was that of an individual, you were not “a people”, you are a person, separated from God. But Praise God, through the atoning blood of Jesus “you” become a “chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession”!
