Covenant of Love

Covenant of Love A call to action, an initiative, and a outreach offered to Catholic parishes designed to strengthen marriages through a variety of resources.

Created by The Alexander House, Covenant of Love (COL) is more than a ministry: It's a call to action, an initiative, and a outreach offered to Catholic parishes, designed to strengthen existing marriage ministries or to help form a solid foundation for marriage ministry. Covenant of Love works to educate, strengthen, promote, and advocate the splendor, beauty, and truth of God’s plan for marriage

. In the Gospel, Jesus Christ teaches us in that a married couple is “no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” (Matthew 19:6) But marriage is hard, and too often, couples receive little or no help from their local parish. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) reported that a majority of married couples show a real desire for more marriage enrichment and educational activities at the parish or diocesan level, such as adult faith formation classes, support groups, retreats, and mentoring for couples who are experiencing difficulties in their marriages. Long before these desires were identified, The Alexander House was already piloting what is now know as Covenant of Love. Since 1999 The Alexander House has helped hundreds of couples reconcile and assisted them in living out joy-filled marriages. Through this apostolate they also saw a clear need for a parish-based marriage ministry. Their approach has been called, by others the practical application of Theology of the Body, for it combines theology, psychology, and practical experience to strengthen, sustain, and restore marriages. COL advocates for the dignity, sanctity, and permanence of marriage, being a vehicle to provide practical tools for couples to joyfully live out God’s plan for their vocation of marriage, supplying husbands and wives encouragement and hope in their marital relationships

Covenant of Love coordinates, creates, and offers various marriage education and enrichment opportunities for the parish and is comprised of several sub-ministries (i.e. Marriage Preparation, DATE NIGHT, Marriage Disciples, United in Christ – United in Love). If you already have a marriage ministry, we can assist you in adding new dimensions that will enhance what you are already doing. Our programs can be easily blended into an existing marriage ministry or can become the foundation to build a new one. Contact us to discuss further.

There used to be a time when we would ask, “What is God’s plan for marriage?” and we would be met with the deer in the headlights stare. Now, when asked, without hesitation, people shout out – To get each other to heaven. To which I respond, “How do we do that?” And the dear in the headlights looks returns. Too many times we learn the sound bites or catchphrases to respond to various questions, but we need not only to learn the appropriate response but to “live” the right answer as well.

A question that I’ve been asking, lately, is, “What is the purpose of Marriage?” One could ask, isn’t the goal and purpose the same thing? Ah, not exactly. A goal is an objective, something you strive to achieve. This is why heaven should be our ultimate goal in life, and marriage is a relationship to assist each other in getting there. A purpose is a reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. The purpose of marriage is for each spouse to be transformed into the image and likeness of Christ. We are called to learn to love like Jesus.

To love like Jesus, we have to identify the ways in which he loved. His love was unconditional, merciful and sacrificial. Therefore, we must exercise those same characteristics if we are to love like Christ. For a spouse to exemplify unconditional love, he/she needs to have a spouse who fails to meet all of their conditions in marriage. If you had a spouse that met all of your conditions you would not be able to practice unconditional love. Get the picture? If you have a spouse that was perfect and never messed up, you would not have the opportunity to extend merciful love. To know and experience sacrificial love, you need to have a spouse that does not cater to all of your “selfish” needs. So, when we have a spouse who fails to do things the way that we like to have them done or requires for us to extend mercy or requires us to go outside of ourselves to do for them – we complain! We complain because we fail to see that God has given us an imperfect person that allows us the many opportunities to learn to love like his son, Jesus Christ!
