Keightley & Core Jerseys

Keightley & Core Jerseys KCJF has been focused on breeding quality Jerseys since 1955.

In that time, we have bred a National Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion, All American Junior Show Grand Champion, and two Jersey Jug Winners.

This week’s pick is Brooke’s.

BPF Fashion Pat of O-Ma-Braggin EX-93, or "Georgia" as she was known around the farm, since that is where she was from.

Brooke got Georgia after Brady picked Lacy. Georgia was Reserve National Champion of the Junior Show in both 2000 and 2001, and both times she finished behind Lacy. So maybe Brooke's pick should come with an "always a bridesmaid, never a bride" disclaimer.

Ironically, Brooke was Reserve National Champion of the Junior Show four different times. Twice with Georgia, once with Treasure, and once with KCJF Sambo Katey.

Georgia only left one daughter for Brooke to show, and unfortunately, that family is no longer on the farm today. But more than 25 years later, Georgia still gets Brooke's vote.

June Dairy Month seems like the perfect time to answer one of the questions we get asked most often:

"Why Jerseys?"

The short answer is because we love them.

The longer answer is that for generations, we've believed Jersey cattle combine everything we value. They are efficient, productive, long-lived, and full of personality. They produce milk with higher butterfat and protein, which is why Jersey milk is especially valued for products like cheese, butter, and ice cream.

But if we're being honest, it goes beyond the numbers.

These cows have helped build our farm, introduced us to lifelong friends, taken us around the world, and created opportunities for generations of our family.

Throughout June, we're going to take you behind the scenes of life on a Jersey dairy farm. From calves and crops to genetics, IVF, and the people who make it all happen, we'll share a little more about what happens here at KCJF.

We hope you'll follow along this month as we pull back the curtain on life at KCJF and share the stories behind the cows, the family, and the farm.

This weekend was spent cleaning, building, moving gates, and turning an old barn into a show heifer barn for Jackson.

With high school graduation this week, we decided to give him something he's been wanting for a long time: a space dedicated to his show heifers.

Jackson is the fourth generation on this farm and part of our family's fifth generation in the dairy business. He's been a huge help over the last year, and anyone who knows him knows how serious he is about showing.

The barn still isn't finished, but it's far enough along that he can start getting heifers moved in and making it his own. We're excited to see what he does with it and what is to come for him after graduation.

Come along with us as we take three generations of Dream to the IVF clinic.

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how technologies like IVF are used on today’s dairy farms. Much like IVF in humans, this process allows us to collect oocytes (eggs) from valuable cows, fertilize them, and implant embryos into surrogate cows.

For cows like Dream, a 2 time National Champion, IVF helps preserve genetics and continue cow families for future generations. Today was extra special because we had Dream, her daughter, and her granddaughter all along for the ride.

Do you see an All-American in the making in those oocytes? 👀

This week’s pick is Brady’s, and it’s none other than KCJF Tracers Ritzy.

There’s a lot more to this one than banners and show results.

When Jeff had his farm accident in 2008, Brady was still in college and basically had to put his life on pause to come home and help Mom keep the farm going. We honestly would not have made it through had he not.

As a thank you, Brady got to pick one calf on the farm to call his own. He picked Ritzy. He already loved her dam, KCJF Centurion Ritz, and with Tracer being a Treasure son, the pedigree was pretty special on both sides. But that black and white tail sealed the deal, and the rest is history.

Ritzy went on to be an All-American Junior 2-Year-Old in 2011 and win the Jersey Jug in 2012. Not bad for a calf picked out because of a black and white tail....and five generations later, that tail is still showing up in the Ritzy family.

Come along with us as we host a farm tour for the Kentucky Local Food Systems Summit.

Thanks to The Dairy Alliance for supporting the tour and helping connect people from across Kentucky’s food system, from extension and KDA to grocery, catering, and distribution, back to the farm.

Always glad to share our piece of the story and some of the challenges small dairy farms are facing.

to KCJF Responses Royal, Brittany’s favorite cow.

She never won the big one, and she only had bull calves, but if you asked Brittany which one she’d want back in the barn tomorrow, it’d be Royal.

A lot of memories are tied up in this one between the barn and the show ring, including a few best bred and owned banners along the way.

A different kind of horsepower in the field today.

We’re spraying herbicide over standing cover crops with the drone while the corn is already planted. The drone allows for a much more precise application using less water and fewer chemicals, while also keeping equipment out of the field to avoid crop damage and soil compaction.

Farming keeps changing, and technology like this helps us be more efficient while taking better care of the land and crops.

Thank you, Sutton Agrivision, for the great work!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there ❤️

Pretty fitting that this little one decided to make her arrival on Mother’s Day morning.

Special shoutout to the farm moms too. The ones balancing chores, kids, schedules, getting white pants clean and everything in between every single day. Farm life doesn’t slow down for holidays, and neither do they.

We’re blessed with one of the best at KCJF.

Our first Throwback Thursday and our first family member who couldn’t narrow it down to just one favorite. 😂

First up is the youngest member of the on-farm crew and the oldest grandkid, Jackson Powers. If something is happening on the farm, there’s a good chance Jackson is right in the middle of it, even while wrapping up high school.

His first pick takes us back to 2015 and the very first animal he showed in the open show, KCJF Million Dollar Krush. At just 8 years old, he won a huge March calf class at the Kentucky State Fair with her before he was even old enough to show in the Junior Show. Brooke, Brady, and Brittany never got that treatment… but I guess grandkids play by a different set of rules. 😉

Krush was also one of the first daughters from our farm-bred bull, KCJF One in a Million, which makes the memory even more special.

Coming in a very close second was Hirds Grandious Maid EX-94. Maid and Jackson were a great pair in the ring, and she always made it easy, unlike her Canadian herdmate, Dream. Maid and Jackson were named Supreme Champion of the Kentucky State Fair Junior Show in 2022, a win he'll never forget.

Stay tuned next Thursday for another family favorite and another trip down memory lane!
