Our Story

The National Hospitality was established by Mother Lillian Brooks Coffey, Second General Supervisor of the Department of Women (seated center, 1953). The function of the National Hospitality began in 1951 when the first National Women's Convention was organized (Official Women's Handbook, 2002). According to Dr. Anthea Butler, "The women in the Church of God in Christ wielded social, political, and spiritual power in the church by their example of living the sanctified life." These women were able to connect to community and civic leaders in the early 20th century.

By 1956, a team of three women, Mother Mattie McGlothen of Northern California, Evangelist Lou Ella White of Southern California, and Missionary Mattie Wigley of Tennessee were given the responsibility of coordinating a venue large enough to host a reception to entertain the profound educator and civil rights leader, Mary McCleod Bethune, who was the Women's Day speaker during the 1956 Holy Convocation.

The National Hospitality has continued to operate under the Department of Women. Mother McGlothen was appointed the First National Hospitality President. She led the National Hospitality until her elevation to Fourth General Supervisor of Women. The succession of General Supervisors and National Hospitality Presidents since the establishment of the National Hospitality are as follows:

General Supervisors of Women: Mother Lillian Brooks Coffey, Second General Supervisor (1945-1964); Mother Annie Bailey, Third General Supervisor (1964-1975); Mother Mattie McGlothen, Fourth General Supervisor (1976-1994); Mother Emma Frances Crouch, Fifth General Supervisor (1994-1997); Willie Mae Rivers, Sixth General Supervisor (1997-2017); and Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis now serves as the Seventh General Supervisor.
