“To be a Sikh and to be young necessarily means to be adventurous. Sant Bhindranwale offered us the adventure.”
- Amar Shaheed Bhai Harminder Singh Sandhu
Bhai Sandhu devoted his life to the cause of Sikh freedom. As General Secretary of the All India Sikh Students Federation, he played a central role in revitalizing Sikh student activism across Punjab, drawing thousands of university students into the struggle for Sikh self-determination.
During the 1980s, Sandhu emerged as one of the movement’s most effective organizers. Under his leadership, the Federation evolved from a marginal student body into a formidable political force. His organizing alongside Bhai Amrik Singh earned the trust of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, making him one of Sant Ji’s closest lieutenants.
Known for his intellectual rigor and gifted articulation, he served as Sant Bhindranwale’s primary interlocutor with foreign press, helping translate a largely misunderstood Sikh political struggle to the outside world. Alongside his AISSF work, Sandhu was also the driving force behind the Dasmesh Regiment, a standing watch of Singhs within Sant Ji’s Jatha.
His writings remain striking for their clarity and foresight even today. At every point in his life, Sandhu sought to materialize the vision of sovereignty that Sant Bhindranwale had conveyed with urgency and conviction. At the time of his death, Sandhu was completing a doctoral dissertation on Sikh history.
The response to Sandhu’s murder on January 24, 1990 revealed the depth of his life’s impact. Condemnations had poured in from across the Sikh world. Bhai Harjinder Singh Jinda and Bhai Sukha, themselves former students inspired by Sandhu, captured the nation’s collective grief when they wrote: “This is not Sandhu’s murder but our murder… Bhai Sandhu was our life and heart, our heart used to beat with his.”
To remember Bhai Sandhu is to confront the questions he sought to resolve through the establishment of Khalsa Panchayats and self-rule in Punjab. Sandhu chose action when retreat was easier. As we honor Bhai Sandhu today, let’s draw strength from his example of advancing the Panth and do our part to build on his legacy.
