Psalm 23

I have memories of Brother Jordan teaching this over the years. I was amazed to find out what it described then.

Hey I was a teen in the 70’s and always pictured a worldly poster that was popular about this Psalm.

Psalm 23 is the most memorized passage in the entire Bible.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS??

"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want."

Beautiful poetry. Familiar words.

And every single line is describing something specific, physical, and real that most people are unaware of.

David was a shepherd. And he was not writing poetry. He was writing a job description.

Here is what Psalm 23 actually says when you understand what a first-century Middle Eastern shepherd did for his sheep.

"He makes me lie down in green pastures."

Sheep do not lie down voluntarily. They are prey animals wired for constant anxiety. A sheep will not rest unless it is free from fear, free from friction with other sheep, free from parasites, and free from hunger.

A shepherd who makes his sheep lie down has solved every source of anxiety in their lives. They are not resting because they chose to. They are resting because he made it safe enough to stop running.

"He leads me beside still waters."

Sheep are terrified of moving water. Their wool absorbs water and they drown. A shepherd never leads his flock to a rushing stream. He finds a calm pool or physically dams a stream with rocks to create still water.

He reshapes the environment so his sheep can drink without dying.

"He restores my soul."

The Hebrew word for "restores" is yashuv. It means "to turn back" or "to bring back." It is the word used for a shepherd who goes out, finds a sheep that has wandered off a cliff or into a thicket, and carries it back on his shoulders.

It is not a metaphor. It is a rescue operation.

"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death."

This is not a metaphor either. There is a real valley near Jerusalem — a narrow, steep-walled ravine between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. Predators hid in the shadows of the cliff walls above.

The only path to green pasture went directly through the place where death waited.

"Your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

Two different tools. The staff has a crook — used to pull sheep out of crevices and guide them back to the path. The rod is a weapon. A short, heavy club used to fight wolves, lions, and bears.

The sheep are not comforted by a walking stick. They are comforted because their shepherd is armed and has already proven he will kill for them.

"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies."

This is not a dinner table. The Hebrew word for "table" refers to a flat, elevated grazing area — a plateau. Shepherds scouted these tablelands in advance, clearing poisonous plants, killing snakes, and driving predators from the edges.

The shepherd did not remove the enemies. He fed his sheep in front of them.

"You anoint my head with oil."

Shepherds poured oil on their sheep's heads because flies and gnats would burrow into the sheep's nasal passages and lay eggs, causing infection and sometimes death. The oil created a barrier the insects could not pe*****te.

Anointing was not a ceremony. It was protection from the things that would destroy them from the inside.

"My cup overflows."

At the end of the day, the shepherd counted his sheep through a narrow gate one at a time, inspecting each one for wounds, thorns, and parasites. If a sheep was injured, he poured oil and water from his cup into the wound.

An overflowing cup meant the shepherd had more than enough to treat every injury. No wound would be ignored.

Every single line. Every image. Every phrase. David was describing what a real shepherd physically did for real sheep in the real hills outside Jerusalem.

And a thousand years later, Jesus stood up and said, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."

He was not borrowing a metaphor. He was claiming the job description David had written.

The shepherd who solves every anxiety. Who reshapes the river. Who carries them home. Who walks them through the valley. Who fights with a weapon. Who feeds them in front of their enemies. Who protects them from the inside. Who treats every wound.

That is Psalm 23.

God is not offering us a poem. He was offering him a shepherd who had already killed the predator, already walked through the valley, already poured oil into every wound.

Psalm 23 is just one passage. There are thousands more moments like it waiting in the pages you have already read.

Did you know that the Ark of the Covenant contained three objects — the broken tablets, the rejected manna, and the questioned rod — and that the Mercy Seat where blood was sprinkled sat directly on top of all three? That the gospel was physically sealed inside a gold box in the desert?

Did you know that when Jesus said "It is finished," the Greek word tetelestai was the same word stamped on receipts in the Roman Empire to mean "paid in full"? That His final declaration was not a statement of ending but of completion. A cosmic debt marked as settled.

Just the roots that make everything you have already read suddenly land with the full weight God intended.

The Bible is not confusing because it is unclear. It is confusing because we are reading it without the foundation that made it clear to the people it was first written for.

David knew what every line meant because he had lived it. He had dammed the streams. He had killed the lion. He had carried the wanderer home.

Jesus made seven statements in the Gospel of John that the religious leaders tried to kill Him for.
Most Christians have heard every one of them.
Almost none know why those words were dangerous enough to die for.

"I am the bread of life."
"I am the light of the world."
"I am the door."
"I am the good shepherd."
"I am the resurrection and the life."
"I am the way, the truth, and the life."
"I am the true vine."

Seven statements. All recorded in the Gospel of John. All beginning with the same two words.

I AM.

Most Christians read these as beautiful metaphors. Jesus comparing Himself to familiar objects.

They are not metaphors. Each statement is a direct answer to a specific Old Testament revelation. And the phrase "I AM" itself was a claim the Pharisees understood instantly — and tried to execute Him for.

Here is what each "I AM" actually meant.

"I am the bread of life."

Jesus said this in John 6 — directly after feeding five thousand people. The crowd followed Him across the lake the next morning hoping for another free meal.

He told them they were chasing the wrong miracle. The bread He multiplied was just an echo. The real bread had already come.

For forty years in the wilderness, Israel ate manna. Bread that fell from the sky every morning. They could not store it. They could not earn it.

Jesus said the manna was not the gift. It was the preview. He had come down from heaven the way the manna came down — daily, undeserved, sustaining life itself.

"I am the light of the world."

Jesus said this during the Feast of Tabernacles. During that festival, four enormous golden lampstands were lit in the Temple courtyard. The light commemorated the pillar of fire that led Israel through the wilderness.

Jesus stood in front of those lampstands and said, "I am the light of the world."

He was claiming to be the pillar of fire. The same presence that led Israel through the dark for forty years.

"I am the door."

The Tabernacle had only one entrance. One door. No side gates. Anyone who wanted to approach God's presence had to enter through that single opening.

Jesus said He was that door. Not a door. The door. The same uncompromising structure God had built into the Tabernacle fifteen hundred years earlier.

"I am the good shepherd."

David wrote Psalm 23 a thousand years before Jesus. The shepherd who solves every anxiety, who carries the wanderer home, who has already killed the predator.

Jesus did not borrow the metaphor. He claimed the job description. David was a shepherd boy who became a king. Jesus was the King who became a shepherd.

"I am the resurrection and the life."

Jesus said this standing outside the tomb of His friend Lazarus. Four days dead. The body already decaying.

The Old Testament had described one moment that looked like this. Ezekiel standing in a valley of dry bones, asked by God, "Can these bones live?" And God breathed life into the skeletons until they stood up as a great army.

Jesus did not say "I will perform a resurrection." He said "I AM the resurrection." Then He called Lazarus out of the tomb.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life."

The High Priest entered the Holy of Holies through one specific path. Through the outer court. Past the altar. Through the veil. Into God's presence.

One way. No shortcuts.

Jesus said He was that path. Not a teacher of the path. The path itself.

"I am the true vine."

Isaiah 5 records God's most heartbreaking complaint. Israel was His vineyard. He had cleared the ground, planted the choicest vines, expected good fruit.

It produced wild grapes.

Jesus stood in front of His disciples the night before He died and said, "I am the true vine." He was the one who would finally produce the fruit God had been waiting for.

Seven statements. Seven Old Testament revelations. Each one a claim that He was the fulfillment of something Israel had been reading about for a thousand years.

But here is the part most Christians miss."I AM" is not a normal phrase in Greek. It is a translation of the Hebrew name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush. When Moses asked God who he should say had sent him, God answered: "I AM has sent you."

Every time Jesus said "I AM," He was using God's own name.

The Pharisees understood this. In John 8, after Jesus said, "Before Abraham was, I AM," they picked up stones to kill Him. Not because they thought He was speaking poorly. Because they understood exactly what He had just claimed.

He was claiming to be God.

That is what I realized the night my daughter came home from her first semester of college.

I have been teaching Scripture my whole adult life. More than 18 years. And last fall my daughter came home for Thanksgiving as a college freshman. She had taken a religion class. Her professor told the class that Jesus never claimed to be God — that the divinity was added later by the church.

She sat at the kitchen table and asked me a question I will never forget.

"Dad, if Jesus actually claimed to be God, why didn't anyone try to kill Him for it?"

I started to answer her with John 8. Where Jesus said, "Before Abraham was, I AM" and the crowd picked up stones to kill Him.

She looked at me and said, "But why did they pick up stones for that? It just sounds like bad grammar."

I opened my mouth. And I stopped.

Because I had read that passage hundreds of times and never once asked why "I AM" was a stoning offense.

That night I went to my study and traced every "I AM" statement Jesus made and connected it back to the burning bush in Exodus 3. I sat at my desk until three in the morning.

In 18 years of teaching, I had never connected the seven "I AM" statements to God's name at the burning bush. I had taught each statement individually. I had explained the metaphors. I had never told my congregation that Jesus was using God's own name every time He said those two words.

My daughter had asked the question my entire ministry had failed to answer.And it was not her fault. It was not her professor's fault. It was not my fault.

Nobody had ever given any of us the roots.

The next morning I started writing. Genesis. Everything someone needs to know before reading Genesis. Who wrote it. When. Why. What was happening. The main themes. How it connects to the larger story.

Not a sermon. Not a devotional. Just the roots.

Then Exodus. Leviticus. Numbers.

Every single book of the Bible.

Sixty-six pages. One page per book.

It took me three months. Three months of putting 18 years of studying into a format any believer could use completely on their own.

No pastor required.

When I finished, I printed a copy and gave it to my daughter.

She came back two weeks later and told me her professor was wrong. And that this time she had the roots to prove it.

I started giving copies to people in my church quietly. One at a time. Every single person said the same thing."This is the first time I have ever understood what I was reading."

Not because I am some brilliant teacher. But because I finally gave them what they actually needed.

The roots.

And once you have those roots, the Bible you thought you knew becomes something you have never actually encountered before.

David played, and demons fled.
Paul and Silas sang, and chains fell off.

Worship has never been just music, it’s a weapon, a language of surrender, and a doorway for God to move. Yet somewhere along the way, we reduced it to a moment, a setlist, a routine.
