Today, the 28th of August, we joyfully celebrate the Dormition (“falling asleep”) of the Mother of God.

When the time came for Her repose, the Apostles (besides Thomas) who were preaching throughout the world were miraculously gathered in Jerusalem to be with Her. After Her passing they laid her body in a tomb near the Garden of Gethsemane. When the Apostle Thomas arrived three days later with the desire to see her body, the tomb was found to be empty, confirming her bodily assumption.

The Church understands this as Her being taken up into heaven, body and soul, to share in the glory of Her Son. This feast is not simply about death, but about the victory of life in Christ, showing us the destiny that awaits all who are united to Him.

In this mystery, we see the fulfillment of God’s promise that death has been overcome and that those who are faithful will not remain in the grave. The Dormition is therefore both a comfort and a path: a comfort because we are reminded that Christ has prepared eternal life for us, and a path because we are led to follow the Theotokos in her purity, humility, and unwavering obedience to God.

The Dormition reminds us that the Theotokos continues to intercede for us as our loving Mother, drawing us closer to her Son, the source of life and resurrection ☦️🙏

Troparion, tone 1: In giving birth, you preserved your virginity, and in falling asleep you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos. You passed into life as the Mother of Life, and by your prayers, you deliver our souls from death

The Dormition Fast ☦️ The Fast will commence on Friday, August 14 and conclude on Friday, August 28.

Fish is permitted on the feast day of the Transfiguration, which falls on Wednesday, August 19.

This is a special time for prayer, self-control, and turning to Bogorodica for help, repentance, and preparation as we honour her falling asleep and being taken into heaven.

During this fast, we eat only plant-based foods and only in moderation. Fasting also means not eating until we are full but to limit the amount we eat. True fasting is not just about the body. It is about lifting up the soul and controlling sinful thoughts and desires.

If we fast from food but still speak badly, do wrong things, or keep anger and bad feelings in our hearts, then our fasting is meaningless. We must give up bad habits such as criticising others, envy, laziness, drunkenness and spend more time in prayer.

Saint Paul tells us to test ourselves to see if we are worthy. No matter how good we think we are, we are never worthy on our own. Holy Communion and our salvation are gifts from God.

We all make mistakes and fall but we must keep repenting, getting back up, and turning to God. Saint Gregory Palamas said that God can do anything but He will not unite with an unclean soul.

Please follow the fasting guide for each day’s details.

Let us enter this fast with open hearts and a desire to be renewed.

Bogorodica, who stands before the throne of God as our advocate, pray for us.

Most Holy Bogorodica, save us!

Yesterday we celebrated the feast of the Venerable Martyr Paraskeva-Petka, the Patron Saint of our Church.

A blessing for our Church was the visit of the Miraculous Icon of the Mother of God from Abalask Siberia, which was brought by Father Boris from the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR).

May have the intercession of Sveta Petka and our Most Holy Mother of God 🙏

☦️ This Saturday is the feast of St Petka, our parish’s big celebration day.

It is an important day for all of us to try and attend this Saturday. We wouldn’t be MOY without our parish Church, and it is beautiful and gracious that we can come together to worship, celebrate, and give thanks to the Lord on this special day for our blessed community.

We will also receive the blessing of welcoming the miracle working Abalak Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God. This is a rare and special opportunity to venerate this holy icon and receive its blessing.

After Liturgy, everyone is invited upstairs to the hall where we will eat, enjoy some speeches and entertainment to celebrate this occasion together.

God willing, we’ll see you all there! ❤️
