Walkup Grove Cemetery

This is a quaint little cemetery down a gravel road outside of Fairfax, MO.

There is reports of it being haunted and that you can see a ghost of a kid at times here. The tree line makes for a gorgeous look to the cemetery and it appears to be well maintained. I’ll see if I can find some more info about this cemetery.

Cemetery #4

Smith Cemetery

A beautiful small cemetery just north of Rock Port, MO. I couldn’t find much information about the cemetery online. It’s well taken care of and a beautiful resting spot. It’s on the top of a hill looking over the beautiful farm land.

Cemetery #3. High Creek Cemetery.

The first burial in the High Creek Cemetery was May 31, 1883, when twin daughters of a family in the neighborhood died of diphtheria. A.M. Bradley was the teacher at the High Creek School at that time and he asked if any of the children wanted to go over to the burial. Charlie Hall and Charles Bartholomew wanted to go. When the boys came back to the school the teacher called them up to the window and looking out towards the cemetery he said "Remember you were at the first burial in the High Creek Cemetery and when you are young men that hillside will be dotted with graves."Some graves from the Steiner Cemetery were moved to High Creek after Steiner was no longer used. In about the year 1885 the Missouri river was engulfing the early day town of Sonora, which was located two miles west of the present day town of Watson. Fearing the river would also cover the cemetery those who could afford it moved the graves of their loved ones to the High Creek Cemetery on the bluff. Which graves were relocated are unknown, but all deaths dating before May 31, 1883, have been moved to High Creek from Steiner or Sonora Cemeteries.

High Creek is one of the older cemeteries in Atchison County, and therefore it contains much history. Names of some of the pioneer families represented there include; Barnhart, Bayless, Frede, Garst, Good, Hall, Hays, Million, Moore, South, Stoner, Watts and York. The eastern border of the cemetery is said to be called "Strangers Rest" the burial site of the poor and needy. Many of these graves are of unknown individuals and therefore unmarked.

Cemetery #2

Probably one of the sadder sites I’ve seen lately. Sonora Cemetery outside of Watson, MO. The floods have done a number on the cemetery. I imagine in its day this was a breathtaking cemetery. The Corp of Enigneers should have came in and repaired this cemetery after 2019. It’s a shame to see a place of rest in such conditions. In todays world we get upset about beer sponsors and people we don’t know, when we have beautiful things like this ruined by a flood that likely could of been avoided. Maybe I’m putting too much on the plate of the government but just my feelings about this.

Sonora was a town that moved and eventually became Watson, MO. One that happened over the years and floods the town was swallowed by the river and taken back by Mother Nature. A lot of families that could afford it, moved their loved ones to High Creek Cemetery as the town moved to Watson.

Cemetery #1.

This has to be one of the most beautiful cemeteries in our county. I’ve been doing a passion project where I’ve been taking pictures and documenting every Cemetary in Atchison County. I have a list of 34 total in Atchison County. I’ve visited about half of them. This one I’ve always seen from the interstate, but driving up to it and walking into it. It’s such a serene and beautiful place. A lot of the headstones are in German after looking the words up. Which makes sense since Corning in it’s heyday had a large German immigrant population.

I found this online from an old article of the Atchison County Mail:

Corning Mount Hope Cemetery is the silent sentinel on the high, steep loess bluff in Atchison County near Corning, Mo. That range, due to the nature of how it was created, has been there for thousands of years. It is unique because there are only a few places in the world where that soil structure can be found.

The history of Mount Hope Cemetery is vast and interesting. It is believed that Meriwether Lewis and William Clark would have passed through the cemetery grounds on July 13, 1804, during their stay near Rulo, Nebraska. The oldest headstone belongs to Eliza Hawks, who lived from September 25, 1805 to September 9, 1842. The first deed of ownership of the land is dated February 20, 1857, to Henry Bertram.
