Holy Week (March 29-April 5)

Holy Week is a special time in the liturgical year where we enter into the passion of our Lord as we follow him from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to his last supper with the disciples on Maundy Thursday to his death on the cross on Good Friday, deeply embracing the reality of his sacrifice for us and remembering our call to take up our cross and follow him.

Those depths of sorrow then bring us to the heights of joy as we gather on Easter Vigil to recall "God's saving deeds in history," culminating in the return of the "alleluia" as we proclaim our Lord's resurrection and celebrate the sacrament of baptism. This celebration continues on Easter Sunday as we joyfully proclaim his victory over sin and death.

We hope you can join us for the full Holy Week journey!

Palm Sunday in the sanctuary (March 29 at 11am)
Maundy Thursday in the chapel (April 2 at 7pm)
Good Friday in the chapel (April 3 at 7pm)
Easter Vigil in the sanctuary (April 4 at 6:30pm)

Ash Wednesday services tomorrow (February 18) at 7am and 7pm in the chapel at Peace Lutheran (4512 France Ave N, Robbinsdale).

Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made, and you forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

Increase, O God, the spirit of neighborliness among us, that in peril we may uphold one another, in suffering tend to one another, and in homelessness, loneliness, or exile befriend one another. Grant us brave and enduring hearts that we may strengthen one another, until the disciplines and testing of these days are ended, and you again give peace in our time; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have us do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices; that in your light we may see light, and in your straight path we may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Almighty God, you created us in your own image: Grant us grace to contend fearlessly against evil and to make no peace with oppression; and help us to use our freedom rightly in the establishment of justice in our communities and among the nations, to the glory of your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

O God, you made us in your own image, and you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

O God, the Creator of all, whose Son commanded us to love our enemies: Lead them and us from prejudice to truth; deliver them and us from hatred, cruelty, and revenge; and in your good time enable us all to stand reconciled before you in Jesus Christ; in whose Name we pray.

Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

In these difficult days in Minnesota, we are having extra opportunities to gather as a church and pray: worshipping our Lord and interceding for our community. If you are interested in joining us, please email for details. As we gather, we have been praying various collects from the Book of Common Prayer. We will share some of them here over the coming days as an invitation to join with us in prayer.

Heavenly Father, you sent your Son among us to proclaim the kingdom of God in cities, towns, villages, and lonely places. Behold and visit, we pray, the communities of Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Robbinsdale; of Minnesota; and of the United States of America. Renew the bonds of charity that uphold our civic life. Send us honest and able leaders. Deliver us from poverty, prejudice, and oppression, that peace may prevail with righteousness, and justice with mercy. And at the last, bring us to your Holy City, the new Jerusalem, where we shall know perfect unity and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

The Presentation of Christ in the Temple (February 2)
Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that, as your only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple in the substance of our flesh, so we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts by Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty Father, who inspired Simon Peter, first among the apostles, to confess Jesus as Messiah and Son of the living God: Keep your Church steadfast upon the rock of this faith, that in unity and peace we may proclaim the one truth and follow the one Lord, our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
