Throwing it back to 1979.

Our church was featured in the Saturday, November 2, 1979, edition of the Roanoke Times & World-News as the Church of the Week. An excerpt from that 1979 article reads as follows:

"People are our prime concern at First Church of God. We want to meet their needs spiritually, intellectually and socially. Programs are continually being devised and refined to reach these objectives as we minister to our ever-growing congregation," said the Rev. Stanley W. Weisbrod, pastor of the church located at 5008 Hildebrand Road.

As we celebrate our centennial, weโ€™re taking time to remember one of the ministries that shaped so many hearts and lives โ€” Church Court Day School.

For more than five decades, Church Court Day School served our community by nurturing children, supporting families, and planting seeds of faith, learning, and love that continue to grow today!

We would love to see this story through your memories:

โœจ PASTOR SPOTLIGHT: CHARLES TOWRISS (1969โ€“1978) โœจ

Charles Towriss stepped in as pastor of Roanoke First Church of God in May 1969, beginning a season many still remember as one of faith, family, and forward vision.

Under his nine years of leadership, God moved in powerful ways. The churchโ€™s debt was completely retired, leading to a mortgage-burning ceremony in 1974. Worship was refreshed with new hymnals and a new organ, and hearts were stirred toward something even greater.

By 1976, plans were underway for a new sanctuary. Ground was broken that August, construction soon followed, and while the building was rising, the church faithfully worshiped together in the Church Court Gymnasium. In September 1977, the congregation gathered for the very first service in the new sanctuaryโ€”built under Pastor Towrissโ€™ leadership.

A wing of our church still carries his name โ€” Towriss Hall โ€” a reminder that his legacy is not only in brick and mortar, but in lives.

โ€œThe years we were there certainly was an awesome time in our lives. The church truly was my extended family. Iโ€™m thankful for the lifelong relationships I have still to this day," said Stacey Towriss Davis, daughter of Charles Towriss.

Towriss passed away in 2010, but we continue to thank God for Pastor Towriss and a legacy that continues to bless Roanoke First Church of God.

Dust in the air. Equipment at work. A future being built.

By 1956, it was clear God wasnโ€™t finished with our story. Our church had outgrown its space, and in faith, a bold decision was madeโ€”to relocate and prepare for what was ahead. The original building and parsonage were sold to Pilgrim Baptist Church, and land was purchased on Hildebrand Road.

Before walls were finished, the church never stopped being the church. While construction was ongoing, the congregation gathered in the Fraternal Order of Police building on Preston Avenue.

Godโ€™s people continued the work of ministryโ€”worshiping, praying, serving, and believing. By October 1957, the doors of the new facility opened. Just weeks later, on November 3, 1957, the building was officially dedicated.

As we celebrate 100 years, we honor the faith that poured the foundationโ€”and the vision that kept building, even before the walls were up.

In 1925, Roanoke First Church of God began as the Rugby Church of Godโ€”a small group of believers gathering in homes and borrowed spaces in the Roanoke Valley.

They trusted God to do something greater than they could imagine.

By 1930, that faith took shape with a church building on Rugby Boulevard, and as the Valley grew, so did the vision.

In 1957, God led the congregation to Hildebrand Road, where the church became what we now know as Roanoke First Church of Godโ€”continuing to expand, serve families, educate children, and invest deeply in the community through every season.

Today, 100 years later, we are still here by the grace of Godโ€”standing on a foundation built by prayer, sacrifice, and obedience. What began humbly has become a lasting testimony of Godโ€™s faithfulness in the Roanoke Valley.

This is just the beginning of our story weโ€™re excited to share.
Stay with us as we celebrate 100 years of faith, community, and Godโ€™s goodness

โœจ Celebrating 100 Years of Godโ€™s Faithfulness โœจ

A sacred milestone honoring a century of worship, witness, and Godโ€™s grace in the Roanoke Valley.

Our story began in 1925 as the Rugby Church of God, gathering in homes and missions under the leadership of Rev. Harry Carr. In faith, land was purchased, a church was built, and a legacy was born. Through each season โ€” new locations, expanding ministries, debts retired, children nurtured, and lives transformed โ€” God has guided every step for us as Roanoke First Church of God.

From Rugby Boulevard to Hildebrand Roadโ€ฆ from a small sanctuary to a church reaching generationsโ€ฆ from the first service in 1930 to today โ€” we stand humbled and grateful.

As we prepare for our 100th Anniversary Celebration, we invite you to walk this journey with us.

Each week, weโ€™ll be sharing memories, testimonies, historic moments, photos, and stories that reflect Godโ€™s goodness and the people who have shaped this church through the decades.

Our official Save the Date card is included in this post โ€” so mark your calendars!

We are humbly grateful to God for the accomplishments He has allowed us in the Roanoke Valley. We invite you to become a part of the church today and a piece of its history tomorrow.

Hereโ€™s to 100 years of faith, fellowship, and forward vision โ€” and to all God is still going to do.
