It was brought to Cuba in the 1830’s through the Atlantic slave trade. To this day, this traditional drumming plays a meaningful role in the Afro-Cuban identity. Of all of the drums, the Batá are the mo

st established in the mystical Santeria religion. Batá means family; they carry a tradition of harmony and happiness. The magic and power of the Batá is only manifest when everyone plays in harmony and a sacred give and take conversation ensues. There are four individual Batá drums in the Batá family: Iyá - the mother, Itótele- the brother or the strong arm, Okónkolo- the child. Omelenko stands in its own category. Of the four, it is most common for only the first three to be played regularly in Cuba. In ceremony, the folkloric traditions and significance of each drum is valued and adored. Through the playing of the Batá drums, and using music as universal language I seek peace, harmony and the unification of all people. The drums strengthen my desire to build and support my community from a place of peace and honesty. Followers or not, whether inside or outside of Cuba, may you love each other, help and support each other. We do not need to walk together physically; we can walk together united by good thought, good energy, good intentions, and good deeds. This is difficult, but not impossible. This is the challenge. Every day, we have an opportunity to demonstrate our humility and our greatness. Destruction is easy and holds little value. A tree may not be as big or lush as another, but only a little water can make a difference in producing good fruit. There is no need to fake perfection, just begin to believe, and you can to give voice to a dream. Perfect is God, Olodumare, Olofin, Zambi, Muna, Buddha, Allah, Jehovah. Whatever names, may they bless and guide us. Ashe, Amen.
