IJUBÁ
Ijubá: Means to give Iba (reverence)
Iba: I give reverence (meaning solemn respect and homage to authority)
Mo Jubá: We give reverence (used when in a group, just as when someone gives Iba).
In the Yoruba Religion it is mandatory to give Iba before starting any ritual.
Every time a rite to Òrúnmìlà, Òrisá, Ìrunmòle, Ancestors, etc., is carried out in a gathering of people, an Iba should be recited before beginning. It is a way of recognizing those present and an act of respect to colleagues, peers, and elders in the religion who are present.
It is important to highlight that reciting Iba to Olódùmaré, Orí, Òrúnmìlà, Ifá, Ìrúnmòle, Òrisá, ancestors, and to the people present is the correct way to count on their support and blessings in order to achieve a strong connection with the forces of nature.
Olódùmaré (The Creator) is the supreme being in the Yoruba Religion and it is to Him that all prayers are directed. Therefore, it is essential that when praying He be included, as it is fitting that He be honored when reciting Iba. There is no single standard format for prayers in the Yoruba Religion; the practice adapts to the teachings each student has received and varies according to knowledge and ritual.
Examples of Iba (Reverences):
- Iba Olódùmaré, Oba a te rere k’ayé – My reverence to Olódùmaré, who governs everything in the universe.
- Iba Orí – Reverence to my head, the extension of God.
- Iba Òrúnmìlà Eleri Ipin – Reverence to Òrúnmìlà, witness of human destiny and creation.

- Iba Ìgbà Ìrúnmòle ojukosìn – Reverence to the 200 Ìrúnmòle at the left hand.
- Iba Ọkànléní Irínwó Ìrúnmòle – Reverence to the 401 Ìrúnmòle that journey alternately between heaven and earth.
- Iba Akodá – Reverence to Akodá (first disciple of Ifá).
- Iba Asedá – Reverence to Asedá (first disciple of Ifá).
- Iba àwon Ìyá – Reverence to the Mothers, the mystical birds.
- Iba Egúngún – Reverence to the Ancestors (here we mention our own ancestors).
- Iba Olúwo – Reverence to my initiator.
- Iba Babá Ifá – Reverence to my Ifá teacher.
- Iba Babá – Reverence to my Father.
- Iba Yèyé – Reverence to my Mother.
- Reverence to my spouse, children, biological and religious family.
- Reverence to all Babalawos and Iyanifá worldwide.
- Iba gbogbo Ab’Orisa patapata – Reverence to all Òrisá devotees in the world.
- Reverence to all those present (if applicable).
- Iba tó tó tó mo jubá – My humble reverence, my modest respect.
- Asé, Asé, Asé ó.
**Important note:
This procedure is vital because our greatest support comes from Òlódùmarè (God). As we give reverence and invocation, the energetic level rises and we achieve stronger spiritual connection. This strengthens our spiritual lineage and makes it more effective by obtaining the blessing of our elders, who support us in our practice and teaching of Òrisá and Ifá. Through this, we acquire stronger Asé within us, and when making petitions or rituals the benefit in the results will be greater.
Morning supplications contain verses or prayers that can save our lives, or the lives of our relatives and friends. Life gradually changes when practiced faithfully. Ifá always encodes its information, and by understanding what each verse means and does, changes manifest immediately on physical and spiritual levels.
We must remember that when doing this daily, we must watch our words, as divine power has been given to them. In the sacred Odù Ose Otura, Ifá says that in the mouth of the awo exists Iba and Asé. For this reason, it is most important to maintain patience and good character. In another Odù, Òfún Otura, Ifá teaches: before speaking, it is wise first to think.

IJUBA
