John Biermann brings us more words of encouragement.....

Sometimes life seems crazy doesn’t it? Food costs more, gasoline costs more and well, everything costs more. The news around the world is hard to watch at times and many people are totally unsure of what comes next. The big news right now is that we may not be able to purchase all the Christmas gifts we want to receive and give! Wait a minute, isn’t Jesus the biggest Christmas gift? Things are out of whack aren’t they. You may suffer from a broken heart, a broken life and Jesus says, Come to the Father!

In a Christian song I am reminded that every tear you cry is precious to the Lord in his sight. The song writer reminds us to Come to the Father in Jesus the Son. Why is it that we only view what is happening around us as the real life we live. Isn’t real life, living in a relationship with Jesus? When we turn our eyes upon Jesus, we are looking at the very love of God.

Everything that God has done, has been done for us in Jesus Christ. The Power of his Written Word (the Bible) shares the power of Jesus on the Cross to bring us back to Him – for eternity! Everything God has done is done so that you might come in faith to Him! Even in crazy times like this, God invites us to Come!

Nothing you’ve done could make God love you less or close the door! Everything he’s done was done so that you might come! Never give up on God, he never gives up on you! He wants you to come, to believe in Him and to live with Him.

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says to us: Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Wow, what an invitation to Come! If you have never received Jesus into your heart, now is the time, even in these crazy times. Come to him in prayer and ask Jesus to be your savior, to love you, to forgive you and to bring you real life!! If you are already a Christian, pray to Jesus to renew your faith in him each and every day.

Jesus is the constant in life, who will never leave you or forsake you. When you come to him, he is yours and you are his – for life. He will love you with an everlasting love. Deal with your life through a relationship with the one who has invited you to Come to Him – Jesus!

Amazing Grace for Today

Are you feeling hopeful or hopeless as you wake up every day? Each morning’s newscast seems to bring more and more negative thoughts about every facet of our lives. I hear people sharing many feelings of discouragement, feelings that are deeply seated in happenings that are completely out of their control. I’ve noted how quickly political ideals clash, how separated many feel from people whom they used to call friends and how loneliness begins to set in. Oh yes, hope is still alive! I believe it is found in the word GRACE! Why the word grace? Because the giver of grace is non other than God himself. That grace come from God’s Son, Jesus the Christ! Here is the way the Bible puts it in Ephesians 2:8, “you have been saved by grace through believing. You did not save yourselves, it was a gift from God.”

In a message this last week, Dr Charles Stanley shared the fact that God daily shares His grace with us! It is so easy to only think of grace for a particular time, event or place. However God continues to share his grace with us each and every day. We are loved and cared for by God every moment of lives. This is what we are called to focus upon as opposed to all the negatives of our world.

I am sure that most of you have heard or sung the gospel hymn Amazing Grace. Two of my favorite artists who sing that song are: Reba McEntire and Alan Jackson. As I listen to them sing this old hymn, it is as if hopelessness is turned into Hope! My Grandma’s first name was Grace and she lived out that song in her life, affecting my attitude when I was in her presence. God’s grace was showered on me when I was with Grandma, Grace Hanson. My mother in law, Arlene Shaw was another giver of God’s Grace in my life. She had very little materially, but she freely shared Gods Grace with others. My mom’s middle name was grace, Muriel Grace Biermann. She too was a big time sharer of God’s grace in my life.

We strive to find hope, encouragement and positive thoughts by our own power. Really, it is not how much we try, but our focusing on God’s gift of Grace that He so freely gives each and every day. When I read from the Bible, I experience God’s Grace. When I receive Holy Communion, I am receiving God’s grace. When I watch a baptism, I see God’s grace in action. There is so much to be hopeful about – especially when we are centered on the giver of GRACE – God. Someone once shared with me an acrostic using the word Grace – Gods Riches At Christ’s Expense. As you wake each morning, be prepared for receive another day of God’s love in the word GRACE!

Just think about it – God is ready to dump Grace into all the aspects of your life. Go for it, focus on it and give grace away to others!! John Biermann

Living for Jesus

Not sure about how you face each day in your life, but I know that I need to face my daily living with my Lord and Savior Jesus. With all the stress, conflict and pressure of each day it is very easy to lose sight of what is really important. I would like to challenge you today to start your day with thinking about God’s presence and what He might envision for you each and every day.

In my daily devotion I read the story of Jesus healing a l***r. Talk about how horrible each day might have been for a l***r in Jesus’ day. The only thing a person with leprosy had to look forward to was pain, suffering and being shunned by his or her fellow human beings. Jesus saw this man, had pity on him and healed him of his horrible disease. Just imagine how life changed for this man – all because he had encountered the Savior of the World, God’s Son, Jesus the Christ.

Now you may not be suffering from leprosy, but you and I still have a need to encounter Jesus every day of our lives! There are so many self imposed road blocks to keeping us from starting our day with the most important person in the world, someone that can change our daily world view! This morning I listened to the SeaHawks coach Pete Carroll cast his positive vision for all of his team and all of the fans of that team. His talk had very little to do with sports. His talk had everything about how we approach each day that we are alive on the face of the earth! How do we approach each day?

Again, I would like to challenge you to have a moment of encounter with God every morning! If you miss a day or two, make it a priority to start tomorrow! Find a devotional series, open the Bible to the book of Psalms, just bow your head and pray to God to make himself known to you this day. It may only be a minute or two or much longer – just do it! Focus your life on the Savior of the World, not just the problems of the world. I am not asking you be simplistic and deny all that you have to face, but to start with God and move into the day with his presence. Our own pastor Dave is preaching on “Going Deeper” for the next weeks – listen to what he has to say – Go Deeper with God!

Let me close with my favorite prayer from my daily devotional series:

Father, help me to live this day to the full, being true to You, in every way. Jesus, help me to give myself away to others, being kind to everyone I meet. Spirit, help me to love the lost, proclaiming Christ in all I do and say. Amen.

A great word from John Biermann

Loneliness
Recently I have been dealing with a sense of loneliness. I think it is just a part of getting older and losing people you love in your life. Don’t get me wrong, I have led a blessed life, have a wonderful wife and a God who loves me with an everlasting love. What I am talking about is the reality of often feeling alone in a world that is constantly changing and not always for the better.
Today one of our neighbors moved away. We didn’t know them very well, but did share our faith in God. Friends across the street are also planning a move in the near future and I will miss them greatly. Another neighbor will pull out for a trip in their travel trailer and the cul de sac will grow a little quieter. Most of the people in our neighborhood will be gone this weekend and again if feels lonely.
This last year, I lost two of my best friends. One was a person and their family with whom we traveled and camped. We spent so much time together, it still feels unreal that he is gone and now with the Lord. Recently I lost another friend with whom we spent so much time. We shared our faith in Jesus, went on many boating trips together and literally raised our kids with one another. However, once again, he is gone to be with the Lord and I miss him.
I have learned a lesson about loneliness this past year. Loneliness is not my destination, Jesus and His eternal kingdom is my destination. God has given me a real soul mate in my wife Sharlee. I treasure her presence in my life and thank God for her every day! Yes, I still experience a sense of loneliness at times, but my life is filled with God’s presence, his friendship and his Hope. What helps with the sense of feeling lonely is the Joy that only God can give.
Listen to the words of Nehemiah 8:10, “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” What a sense of encouragement, that the Lord of the Universe wants to fill our loneliness with His presence. Praise Be to God.

Staying Connected with God!

So where are you in life during these stressful times. Where do you turn for peace and understanding? Are you a Mask supporter or not? Do you have the vaccine or not? Do you know anyone with Covid or have you experienced it yourself? Have you sadly lost someone you love to the Covid virus or do you want to just ignore it? When you begin to make a list like this, it can be rather daunting and frightening can’t it? Where do we put our thoughts and how do we decide what to follow to proceed through the coming days?

I am not sharing my thoughts this morning to see if I can cause you more angst. However, during turbulent times like this, whom or what we follow will determine much of how successfully we live our daily lives.

Yesterday, I was privileged to hear two outstanding sermon messages. One was presented by Pastor Tim Bayer of Our Savior Lutheran Church. The other was by our own Pastor, Tom Shaw of Puyallup Nazarene Church. Both Pastors so encouraged me once again with the Hope, Power and Presence of Jesus Christ in my life, especially right now. I was reminded that I can choose who or what I follow. If I choose to only follow the events of each day as if that is my only choice, I may end up with fear and tension as my constant companion. Why would I want to spend all my time on what I cannot totally control? Both Pastors suggested that it might be better to choose to follow Jesus! Ask in prayer what God would have me do with my life. Ask for the leadership of the Holy Spirit in all my decisions and directions. I am not trying to be simplistic here, but to truly rely on God’s presence and Grace in my life! Engage life with the Hope that only God can give to handle whatever comes my way!!

I would like to challenge you to keep in contact with God each and every day. How about making your first moments of each day a time with Jesus? Read some Scripture, Pray and Proceed. Invite God to be the director of your life! Don’t punish yourself if you forget a day or two, just pick up and go again with God.

One of my favorite passages in the Bible is: John 20:31, “these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name”. Jesus is the real power for my life, both here and in eternity. Rejoice with Him each and every day. Yes there will still be big challenges in life, but you will be following the one who has the answers to real life!

Blessings, John Biermann

John Bierrmann shares....

God’s Peace is Ours

This morning as I watched the news on TV, I was struck by how many things are going sideways in our world today. Amidst all this latest report of what is wrong with the world and our personal lives comes a God of Peace. Really, you might ask? Look at the scary situation with Covid’s latest dramatic rise in new cases. Look at the drought and the lack of relief from it. Reading the newspaper today a lead article portrays the dramatic situation for farmers of wheat in Eastern Washington. If you really want to be a little more discouraged, I am sure I could share more!

Look at Psalm 106:1-3, “Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! Who can list the glorious miracles of the Lord? Who can ever praise him enough? There is joy for those who deal justly with other and always do what is right.” I might add that this - joy includes Peace in our lives. Romans 5:1 puts it this way: “since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.” Wow, we are encouraged to turn to God to find joy and peace in the stress of daily living.

When is the last time that you watched the news and said to God: Thank you Lord for the peace that passes all understanding. This is not just a peace and quiet, but a peace that focuses upon the Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is a peace that many won’t understand unless they know Jesus and trust him. This peace is not something we accomplish, but a gift from God! Focus on God amidst all of life and you too will realize the tremendous gift of God’s peace in Jesus. Pray for others in your life to come to faith in Jesus that they too may share in God’s Peace!

This day “praise God, Give thanks to the Lord!”

Blessings, John Biermann

Here is the latest from John Biermann......

Everything!

This week in our “Lifegroup” we have been reading a devotional that looks at Romans 8:28. “We know that in everything, God works for the good of those who love him.” As I have said before, I don’t know all the challenges in life that you are facing as you live day to day in the craziness of the world. However, I find myself having a hard time understanding some of how to see God in the “everything’s” of life. Let me explain.

I often tell people that I have had many wonderful times of blessings in my life. I look at my family as one of the great blessings of God. My wife Sharlee, my children Heather and Holly, my son’s in law Lupe and James, my grandchildren Keelin, Ben and Evie, to mention a few. However, there have been times of discouragement and the wondering about God’s presence. Early in our marriage, Sharlee and I lost two unborn children and we were hurting and angry with God. As I graduated from PLU, I was excited that I had an appointment to the Naval Academy as a Navy Aviator. Then I was sent a letter that I was “denied” that opportunity because of my eyesight! I was not pleased. Or another time when I almost lost my life in a car accident, had to spend three months of sometimes painful recovery. Really, what about the words “in everything, God works for the good…”?

Perhaps you can identify with events in your own life that bring to God’s promise doubt and wonder. I have found that even in the hard times, whether an event in the past or the current events of daily living, I have been driven closer to the Grace of Jesus and how He is always walking with me. Oh sure, that doesn’t make all the “everything’s” of life fun all of the sudden, but it does drive me to God to rest on His unwavering promises to walk with me through both blessings and disasters.

One of God’s wonderful promises is that, by grace through faith in Jesus, we will receive an eternity beyond our imaginations, an eternity with Him! Perhaps the way He works to help us in the tragedies of life is to keep us focused on Him and His promises. Here is what I am trying to say: God is With Us, no matter what life brings our way. Rejoice in a God who loves and cares for you, a God who will never leave or forsake you. Even with all the “Everything’s of Life” God truly loves you.

Let me know what you think, John Biermann

God’s Gift of Other People

Not sure about all of you who are reading this, but there are times in life that I need other people to walk with me in my daily life. There are so many times that I need other’s “good God advice” to walk with me. Right now there are choices that we need to struggle with in our world. Mask or no Mask is a big deal and we need others to help us make a Godly decision. Vaccine or no vaccine is another hot topic in the world today as we face the latest strain of the virus. What is God’s will for us in our daily living? Go to worship or stay home on Sundays is another question that might be a struggle for you as a Christian. There are no simple answers to these situations for any of us. Sure, you might think that your answers are the right ones and everyone else is wrong! The challenge goes on and on doesn’t it?

I would like to submit that much of our decision making on all levels has a great deal to do with our understanding of where we look for and who we look for advice and direction in our lives. Too often our lives get confused when we only look into ourselves or the popular opinions of others. Have you ever considered that God is the source and final authority on how we live our lives? In Proverbs 1:7 of the New Century Version of the Bible this is how it is put: “Knowledge begins with respect (fear) for the Lord.” Wow – direction for our lives begins and ends with God! Here is how the Passion Translation puts the same verse: “How does a man gain the essence of wisdom? We cross the threshold of true knowledge when we live in obedient devotion to God. Stubborn know-it-alls will never stop to do this, for they scorn true wisdom and knowledge.” Again – it all starts and ends with God! Could it be that in all our decisions of life – God wants to direct us? Not that decisions are easy, but God sure wants to be involved.

One of the great gifts that God gives us is other Christian people, often called mentors. We are talking about people that not only talk a lot about God, but people who live out their faith in God! I was privileged to be a mentor to young pastors from Fuller Theological Seminary for several years. What a privilege to listen, learn and share how God is present in all of our lives and how that shapes all the facets of daily living. I have a dear Christian Pastor friend who is a great spiritual advisor/mentor in my life. Over the years he has been a great mentor to me, to advise, listen and turn me back to Jesus’ presence in my life!

The point? All of the decisions and situations we face need the presence of God’s viewpoint and the presence of Godly people to live our lives.

Blessings, John

More Wise Words from John Biermann

KNOWING WHERE TO TURN

In my devotions this morning I was reminded that no matter what I face, what you face or even what anyone faces, God is always present. I don’t know about you, but when I watch the news each day, I often feel down about what is happening in the world around me. I hear of the gun violence, of people throwing rocks off freeway bridges onto cars, of the new outbreaks of Covid and other negative news. I want to cry out to God and ask – what is happening Lord? That is when I am driven back to the Bible – the inspired, written Word of God.

In God’s Word I find hope and encouragement. I will never find that same hope in negative events that are happening in the world! Oh, sure there are bright spots in some wonderful stories of people’s kindness and special events that are taking place. However, I am reminded in reading God’s Word that I am a child of God and that through the actions of Jesus I find my real HOPE. That is when the Holy Spirit drives me deeper into the wonderful gift of God to me – the Bible. As I read God’s book this morning, I came across some words that He spoke to the prophet Isaiah. In the Old Testament book of Isaiah, Chapter 40, verse 31, God says, but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint”. Wow what an assurance these words bring.

Too often we are consumed by negative events and yet the God of all creation loves us enough to send His Son – Jesus to rescue us from both sin and death. Listen to these words from Colossians, Chapter 2, verse 4, “So then just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught and overflowing with thankfulness”. Verse 12 continues, “having been buried with Him (Jesus) in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead”.

God’s Hope and presence is ready for all your life! Praise God and have a great week!

Wise Words from John Biermann

Look to the Mountain?

Where do you look for support, help or answers for daily living? There are many answers to this question, some helpful and others not. Ever hear the phrase: “When the going get’s tough, the tough get going”? If phrases like this were really true, life would be pretty simple wouldn’t it? However, life is not simple unless you live under a rock. There is the fatalist who says – there is no hope and the optimist who maintains that every problem is really an opportunity. Yes, there is some truth in each clever statement, but that still does not prevent situations where we need to look far beyond ourselves.

On Wednesday Sharlee and I drove to one of our favorite spots – Mt Rainier. The drive gave us the opportunity to get out of the house and view the beauty of the mountain. Mt Rainier National Park was so relaxing, so beautiful and almost felt like a different world. However, at the end of the day we had to drive back home. Not that home is a bad place, but it is also a place where we face the joys and pains, the highs and lows of daily living.

Here is the way the book of Psalms puts it in Psalm 121:1-2, “I look up to the hills, but where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Even with its beauty, Mt Rainier doesn’t have all the answers to life. Only God has real answers to life and wants you to know that you can turn to him no matter what your life throws at you!

The writer of the book of John, reminds us that the Bible, the inspired word of God, was given to us to point us to the real source of life and where to focus our daily life. Here’s what it says, “these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Then by believing, you may have life through his name.” We find real answers to daily living in the very person of God’s Son, Jesus the Christ.

Enjoy the mountain and remember the one who made it!

John Biermann shares words of wisdom for us all.....

Talking with God

Last Saturday began very differently than I had planned. After a nice breakfast with my wife Sharlee, she suddenly became very ill. Things got to the point where I had to call 911. When the firemen came, first to arrive was a full hook and ladder fire truck. That was followed by the fire department’s ambulance. Soon Sharlee was on her way to Good Samaritan Hospital. Her journey took her to the ER, to many different scans and tests and finally a diagnosis. Four days of hospitalization was not at all what we had planned!
The responses of many of our family and friends really helped me walk through this time. God’s presence was always with both Sharlee and me. Perhaps the greatest word for me was Prayer – the wonderful ability to have conversations with God. I was able to share my fears, hope and dreams with my wonderful Savior Jesus! I truly felt the presence of God’s Holy Spirit all the time. So many people used the phrase – “we are praying for you.” Wow, what a privilege to enjoy the very presence of God in Prayer.
You and I always have the gift of God to converse with him in Prayer. One morning we had a wonderful visit from Pastor Dave while Sharlee was still in the hospital. During that visit he led us in Prayer. As he prayed we held hands and talked with God. That afternoon my good friend Jay Bowen (a leader in the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe) sent me a message – “sending healing prayers for your lovely wife” Thanks Dave, Jay and all others who prayed!
No matter what you or I face, God is always available to converse with us in Prayer. The writer of the Book of James puts it this way, “When a believing person prays, great things happen.” (James 5:16, NCV). Always remember God’s desire to hear from you!
Have a great week, John Biermann
