Encouraging Words: Which voice do you follow?

Read 1 John 4:1-6 (NLT)
Thought for the Day: I need to follow the right voice!

When I was in Kindergarten, my parents had me participate in a learn-to-play baseball league. While I didn’t love it (I ultimately realized I’m more of a musician than an athlete), I finished out the season. At the very end, we had a town event for all the kids who participated in Little League. I was very excited because I got to march in with my team. But that day, something happened that has stuck with me.

After the event was over, I went looking for my parents so we could go home. But, because ‘David’ is a very common name and I was so little, I accidentally followed the wrong voice. Someone else had called out my name. When I got to them, I quickly saw that they were NOT my Mom and Dad. As you can imagine, little Kindergarten David was in tears. But my parents quickly found me and took me out for frozen lemonade. That day, I learned the cost of following the wrong voice.

In 1 John 4, Christians are instructed to follow the right voice. While many influencers and would-be prophets will try to get us to follow them, we are to follow the testimony of Scripture and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Rather than following everything that attempts to get our attention, we must test the spirits. With so many trying to influence us in our culture today, let’s keep it simple: anything that doesn’t point us to deepen our relationship with Jesus isn’t worth following. We must test the spirits and follow the right voice!

Pastor David

Encouraging Words: Jesus Strong

Read 2 Timothy 2:1-4 (NLT)
Thought for the Day: Our strength comes from Jesus!

While many situations and circumstances we go through might feel “unprecedented” at times, they aren’t. Christians have faced difficulties ever since a group of people decided to wrongly arrest and execute Jesus. But, we should always remember something amazing: the same Jesus who was wrongly put to death rose from the dead! Evil never wins!

Writing to young Timothy, the Apostle Paul gave timeless advice: Christians will face difficult times. However, we should never lower ourselves to ‘woe is me’ or ‘all is lost’ attitudes. Instead of going through struggles and blaming those around us, we are to “Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Soldiers don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them.”

Do we hear the good news in Paul’s words? At those times when we feel frustrated, we are not alone! We will never face anything that Christians have not already faced over the last 2000 years. In fact, any difficulty we face today is nothing compared to the persecution of the Early Church. This is why it is important to learn the same lesson those early Christians learned. We must not get caught up in the things of today that will be gone tomorrow. Instead, we can always find our strength in Christ. He is eternal!

Let’s never forget that we don’t have to feel strong. Instead, our strength comes from Jesus, and He has promised to never forsake us. We are Jesus strong!

In Christ,
Pastor David

Encouraging Words: Choose Encouragement

Read Acts 13:1-12 (NLT)
Thought for the Day: I can choose to encourage others!

When I was a freshman in college, I became friends with an upperclassman named Chris. At times when I found myself struggling or frustrated, Chris was right there as a positive presence. When I was discouraged, he would listen and then ask if I wanted to go play music with him in the chapel. When I was lonely, we would get food together and then gather a group to watch a foreign film or go on a hike. The more I got to know Chris, the more I saw that he lived out his faith in Jesus by encouraging his friends. He didn’t try to fix anyone. Instead, he simply listened, stayed positive, and valued bringing all of his friends together.

In the days of the Early Church (documented in the Book of Acts), the believers took Jesus’ teachings and established the Church from the ground up. As a community, their focus was on allowing Christ’s teaching and mission to permeate their day-to-day lives. In Acts 4, we read about a man named Joseph who was so committed that he was given a new name by his fellow believers. They called him Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”). When it came time for the Apostle Paul to begin his missionary journeys, the leaders at Antioch gathered to worship and pray: “One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.” Just as God had directly called Paul to plant ministries throughout the world, the Holy Spirit selected an encourager for Paul. Throughout his travels, Paul relied on Barnabas as a steady support of positivity and focus. Even at the times when they experienced setbacks, Barnabas chose encouragement.

Each of us has the opportunity to be a Barnabas - an encourager! Too often, we may find ourselves becoming sons and daughters of criticism or complaining. We may find ourselves focusing on negatives and obsessing over what is wrong with our current circumstances. We may focus on trying to change the unchangeable rather than accepting life on life’s terms. Even at times when this is the case, today is a great day to pause and prayerfully reflect on our attitude and mindset. When we pause, we see that the world doesn’t need one more critic or complainer. Instead, each of us can be a Barnabas to someone today!

Encouraging Words: Faith over appearances

Read 2 Corinthians 5:1-10 (NLT)
Thought for the Day: “...walk by faith, not by sight.”

A few years ago, I bought a kayak and used it all summer. However, in the years since, my kayak has spent far too much time sitting in my parents’ garage. For me, my seldom-used kayak is a good reminder of how we can misunderstand what it means to have faith. If I have faith in something, I have both a strong confidence in it and I rely on it. In other words, I know that whatever I have faith in is true, and my behavior demonstrates my belief. I back up my belief with action. With my kayak, I have confidence in it, but it ends there. In my heart of hearts, I know that whenever I use it, my kayak works. However, because it has sat alone for a few years, I have no action to back up any confidence. As believers, we are called to have confidence and act on our faith throughout each day.

The Apostle Paul understood the importance of going through life with both confidence and action. In 2 Corinthians 5:7, he acknowledges that believers are called to “walk by faith, not by sight”. The Greek word that is used for “sight” describes outward appearance. As a disciple of Jesus Christ, each of us is asked to match our confidence with action. When we fall into habits, it’s usually because we outwardly appear to follow Christ but fail to bring that belief into everyday life.

When you look at my kayak in the garage, I appear to be an enthusiastic kayaker. However, anyone who sees my kayak and then spends time with me quickly can see that there is a disconnect. I don’t use it! If we outwardly profess faith in Christ but do not back it up with a Christ-centered lifestyle, it doesn’t help us any more than having a nice kayak taking up space in a garage.

It is easy to come up with a thousand reasons not to get in the kayak today. To name a few: kayaks are heavy, lifting them can cause back pain, and I don’t have enough time in my schedule. Today, we may not come up with excuses about kayaks, but it is easy to come up with excuses to rely on ourselves and not Christ.

Fortunately, God doesn’t look at the past and say, “Well, that’s it. Game over. Who’s next?” Rather, God is the God of second chances (and third and so on). Jesus’ work on the Cross is sufficient, and this means we can breathe easily and realize that today is a great day to choose faith over mere appearance!

Encouraging Words: Bloom where planted

Read Genesis 39:19-23 (NLT)
Thought for the Day: No matter where I am, I can make a difference for God!

Never in a hundred million years would Joseph have chosen his circumstances. Consider this: Joseph’s unsupportive brothers hated him. Then, he was humiliated, thrown down a well, and sold into slavery. Once there, things went from bad to worse. Despite living with integrity, he was falsely accused of a crime he did not commit and was thrown into an inhumane foreign jail. But, despite his circumstances, Joseph never compromised or resorted to a survivalist mentality.

Rather than letting situations and circumstances crush him, Joseph kept moving forward. “The Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the Lord made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden.” As a man of intense personal faith, he stood strong in his convictions and willingly served those around him. And let’s not miss this: Joseph was authentically himself, trusting God even in prison. We are left to conclude that this is what impressed the warden so much.

Let’s not miss the lesson of Genesis 39. Like Joseph, we typically won’t have the ability to choose our circumstances, but we can always choose to live with integrity. Even if today is difficult, let’s be careful not to retreat into a state of panic and fear.

How can we bloom where planted? By acknowledging that God is sovereign, we can remember His faithful love as we pray, regardless of what else is going on. For the rest of today, let’s live the day with integrity, focusing on making the next right choice as we move forward. Then, tomorrow, let’s do the same thing!

Encouraging Words: Prayer Sets The Tone

Read Mark 1:35-39 (NLT)
Thought for the Day: Prayer sets the tone for the day to come!

When I was a 4th Grader, my Dad often took me to a library in Providence to play chess. Facing a combination of kids my age and adults, whenever I played against a weak player, I often took my time to win. Rather than setting the tone with a strong opening game and working to capture the center of the board, I played down to my opponent’s level. Although I would win, I also developed some bad habits. If I played a few weaker players, when it came time to face a strong opponent, I often became easily frustrated. Over time, I learned two workarounds:

1) When a match was relatively easy, I needed to focus on staying disciplined. Specifically, I needed to set the tone with a strong opening game.

2) When a match was challenging, I needed to enjoy the challenge and remember to once again set the tone with my opening game.

Put simply, I learned that regardless of my opponent, I needed to begin each match by setting the tone. With this new strategy, I improved pretty significantly.

Jesus never played chess, but He set the tone with His opening game: “Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray. Later Simon and the others went out to find Him.” Rather than first starting the day with breakfast with friends or a little extra time sleeping in, Jesus knew the best way to have a great day is to begin with prayer.

Regardless of what today holds, things will only go better when we begin by praying to God, taking time to honor Him first, and asking for His strength for the day. Let's keep it simple: prayer sets the tone!

Encouraging Words: Observing Memorial Day

Read 1 Samuel 7:3-13 (NLT)
Thought for the Day: We remember those who gave their lives in service!

“Samuel then took a large stone and placed it between the towns of Mizpah and Jeshanah. He named it Ebenezer (which means ‘the stone of help’), for he said, “Up to this point the Lord has helped us!” 1 Samuel 7:12

No matter the circumstances we face, we can always turn to God and remember that He alone helps us. With faith in God, we are never alone!

We take time today to remember all those who give their lives in service to our nation. As you enjoy time with your family, we hope you can take a moment to reflect on how acts of service make a difference in our communities and our nation. When we learn from our past, we can live better today!

Together, let’s be thankful and observe this Memorial Day.
