DAY 6 - Wed, Dec 1 - A GREAT MIRICLE HAPPENED THERE … and CAN HAPPEN FOR YOU, TOO!
Christians take the One-Day-Birth of Jesus and somehow get “The 12 Days of Christmas.” So, I - as a Jew - am going to take the 8 nights of Hanukkah and slightly stretch them into “The 12 Days of Hanukkah” … seems only fair … and much more plausible.
Tonight is the 4th night of Hanukkah (Wed, Dec 1).
Check back each of the next 6 days for insights and encouragement from the events of Hanukkah.
Gather with us in person or on our YouTube Channel to celebrate Hanukkah on Sat, Dec 4th, 6:30pm. Details on our website - www.rockofagesmjc.org
DAY 6 - Wed, Dec 1 - A GREAT MIRICLE HAPPENED THERE … and CAN HAPPEN FOR YOU, TOO!
What if we could appreciate BOTH Jehovah’s character AND His power?
In a previous 12 DAYS OF HANUKKAH blog I mentioned the “dredyl” - a four-side top and key part of Hanukkah.
Having been forbidden by the Greek overlords to teach the children in Israel any Hebrew or any of the Scriptures - someone came up the idea of putting items to teach on the flat sides of a top, the dredyl. If the Greek patrols came around, they quickly picked up the dredyl and gave it a spin.
The flat sides were instantly blurred and to the patrols it appeared that those in the circle were just playing a game!
Today, on the four sides of a dredyl, traditionally there are placed 4 Hebrew characters, one on each side. They are -
“Nun” which starts the word “Nes” meaning “Miracle”
“Gimel” which starts the word “Gadol” meaning “Great”
“Hay” which starts the word “Haya” meaning “Happened”
“Shin” which stars the word “Sham” meaning “There)
Together saying “A Great Miracle Happened There” (in Israel, or more specifically in The Temple, during the events of Hanukkah).
In Yiddish, the letters additionally stand for words that are the instructions for a gambling game that is played for fun with the dredyl.
But let’s talk about miracles for a moment!
I think just about everybody would be excited and overjoyed if they experienced a true miracle - where a great need is met, or a great desire comes to pass - especially if it seems there is no way such a thing could happen. Would you agree?
Some people do funny things with God when it comes to miracles. When they don’t see the miracle they want, many times they start saying, “Well, seems to be he really isn’t God, or at least He is not Someone who has the power to do miracles.” Or, perhaps worse, they say, “There He is with all that power, and yet He is not giving me my miracle… He must have a warped, crappy character to not help me when He is able to do so!”
So let’s look at God who often gets attacked by us from one side or the other.
Scripture tells us that God has a name and it is “Yehovah.”
This is the name of The One who spoke and the worlds came into being and who called Abraham out from among the nations to form the Jewish people. It is The Name the God of Israel declared to Moses was His personal name and The Name by which He wanted to be known for all generations - Exodus 3:13-15.
In Hebrew “Yehovah” means “I Am.”
In longer form, the sense in this name is - “I always exist and I am The One who keep on always existing,” or “being, I will always be.”
Additionally, there is the idea of choice that always is reality - “I Am, and I will be what I will be” (and then implied, “and nothing can stop Me from being whatever I choose to be.)
In our Liturgy, at times I have my congregation read “The One Who Can Choose Anything.”
Having no beginning, and having no end, always being - Jehovah has power that is unmatched among anything that exists. He is perfectly capable of performing miracles.
Look at creation, He spoke and it all came into being.
Look at anything new/young coming into existence and how whether tree, or fish, or duck-billed platypus or human - how perfectly designed and how supremely well all the parts work together! Utterly miraculous!
Scripture is filled with stories of Jehovah doing beyond what man can ask or imagine. And since Bible times, those who have trusted in Jehovah and in “Jehovah with us” - Yeshua - those believers have reported miracle after miracle - things happening in their lives that only The Lord of All could do.
So why doesn’t the God of Israel always do the good thing I want or need Him to do?
For me, I am satisfied with this answer. Jehovah “so loved this world that He gave His only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus)… that whoever believes in Him will not have to perish, but will have everlasting relationship with Jehovah and Yeshua (cf. John 3:16 and John 17:1-3 re: “everlasting life”.)
If Yehovah loved us enough to offer us His Son … if Yeshua was willing to suffer and die by crucifixion for my good … to me - in my sane moments - it seems to me He has proven His love towards me. It doesn’t make sense that I should doubt His character … He has done more than enough to prove His character!
And, since He is able to see and understand all things at all times… and since - if I’m honest - I canNOT … it seems I shouldn’t trust myself, I shouldn’t “lean on my own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5,6). Better, I should “trust in Yehovah with all of my heart…”
The Macabbee heroes of Hanukkah and their compatriots had no hope of victory on their own, in their own strength. But with trust in Jehovah, they believed He could give victory over the enemy. They believed He could change the situation to good… AND THEY ACTED LIKE THEY TRUSTED HIM… and then they saw miracles!
I can’t remember the artist but in their song it said, “Sometimes He calms the storm. Sometimes He calms His child (i.e. you or me).”
BOTH are miraculous.
And He knows which option is the better one for His plans and for our good.
What are you facing today that needs a miraculous answer?
Jehovah invites you to “Call on Me, and I will show you great and mighty things you have not yet seen - Jeremiah 31:3”.
Why not call on Him NOW ???
Here’s a great song about having faith in The One who can “bear every burden and heal every hurt in my heart" called WHERE THERE IS FAITH
