Today the Cauldron of Life Wiccan Coven pauses to remember all the people who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Br. Freyr, our High Priest, offered incense and prayers before the Wiccan altar. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ™β€οΈπŸ€πŸ’™ We also prayed for those who they left behind. May all beings be happy and be well.

A member of the Coven Brother Dagda made the following statement, that the Coven shares with his permission:

Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember and honor those that gave their lives in the service of their country. The mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters who died for one another and for those they didn’t know. But it’s also for the ones that came back but never made it home. So today as we live our lives and have a cookout or take our 1st dip in the pool, please take time to remember the ones that gave all. You are not forgotten!

That bright yellow blob that appeared on your mulch overnight isn't a disease. It isn't killing anything. And the bleach isn't necessary.

It's a slime mold. Not a fungus, not a plant β€” a single-celled organism that can grow to the size of a dinner plate. One cell. No brain. No nervous system. It flows across mulch eating bacteria and decomposing wood fibers.

The yellow phase is brief. It appears after warm rain, feeds for a few days, then dries into a dark crust and releases spores. Gone.

It doesn't attack plants. It doesn't infect roots. It doesn't poison soil. The most it can do is sit on top of a low plant for a day and shade it.

The part most people miss β€” slime mold only shows up where decomposition is active and microbial life is thriving. If it's on your mulch, your mulch is working.

🌿 What to do:

- Leave it β€” gone on its own within a week
- If the look bothers you, hose it off with water and rake the mulch apart
- Skip the fungicide β€” slime mold isn't a fungus, and broad fungicides damage the beneficial fungi your plant roots depend on

Proof your soil is alive. It just looks alarming on the way through πŸͺ΄

For all you mothers, parents and nurturers for whom this is a happy day, Happy Mothers’ Day! But for all of you who wanted to be mothers and couldn’t, or didn’t, or who have lost children, or have estranged children, for whom this is a painful day for whatever reason, for anyone who is not getting flowers or chocolates today, I’m not going to offer hearty, reassuring words about the many ways we can mother and nurture. I just want to give you a rose!

Happy Beltane! Br. Freyr saw this image and was inspired to give a short teaching based on it:

"This is "rebirth" or " reincarnation."

For me, I see the creation and the creator as being one.

We can learn a lot when we slow down and observe nature around us... and we can learn and understand even more when we come to realize that nature and us are not two, are not separate, but that we are part of nature... we are nature.

Nature is a constant cycle of life, death and rebirth and renewal.

Isn't it amazing to be part of such a sacred system?

πŸŒ·πŸŒ²πŸŒ±πŸŒΏπŸ¦—πŸπŸ•·πŸ¦πŸΏπŸ‡πŸ¦ŒπŸΎπŸ¦¨

Happy Beltane. Blessed be, blessed be!"

A branch fell off your oak last fall. You've been meaning to haul it to the curb. It's been on the ground for six months.

In that time, it became an apartment building.

Year one: Fungi colonize the exposed wood. You can see the first brackets forming on the bark β€” small, shelf-like growths that are breaking down the lignin and cellulose inside. The branch is getting softer.

By year two or three: Beetle larvae have tunneled into the softened wood. Their galleries β€” winding channels the width of a pencil lead β€” aerate the interior. Woodpeckers find the branch and drill into it to extract the larvae.

By year five: A red-backed salamander has moved into one of the beetle galleries. She lives in the damp, rotting wood and hunts pill bugs, mites, and springtails on the surface. The branch is now a hunting ground and a shelter.

By year ten: The branch is mostly soil. The fungi, the beetles, the salamander, the woodpecker β€” they converted a fallen limb into nutrients that are feeding the tree it fell from.

🌿 A different way to see the branch:

- A fallen branch is not debris β€” it's a building under construction
- If it's not blocking a path, leave it where it fell
- The fungi that colonize it aren't disease β€” they're decomposers doing their job
- One fallen branch can support more than thirty species over its lifetime

You almost hauled it to the curb. Thirty species are using it now. 🌿

Happy Earth Day!🌍

We share this poem by the amazing Joy Harjo in celebration of the beautiful Earth ship we all call home, and to all of our fellow passengers, both flora and fauna, that we are traveling with. Blessed be, blessed πŸ™

Remember
Joy Harjo (1951 –)

Remember the sky that you were born under,
know each of the star’s stories.
Remember the moon, know who she is.
Remember the sun’s birth at dawn, that is the
strongest point of time. Remember sundown
and the giving away to night.
Remember your birth, how your mother struggled
to give you form and breath. You are evidence of
her life, and her mother’s, and hers.
Remember your father. He is your life, also.
Remember the earth whose skin you are:
red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth
brown earth, we are earth.
Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their
tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them,
listen to them. They are alive poems.
Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the
origin of this universe.
Remember you are all people and all people
are you.
Remember you are this universe and this
universe is you.
Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.
Remember language comes from this.
Remember the dance language is, that life is.
Remember.
