Worthwhile Adventures

Worthwhile Adventures We are Joshua and Alisha Garber – postmodern Anabaptist mission workers. However, in 2022 we realized God had other plans.

When we met in college, we discovered we are very different people who share a very particular calling: to serve and love people in an international setting. Fast forward to 2010 when we found ourselves first in the Czech Republic and then in Lithuania in 2012. In 2017, we began serving in Barcelona with the hope that it would be a life-long calling. Now, with a missional understanding formed by 1

0+ years of serving in post-modern, post-Christendom environments, we are preparing to serve in Glasgow, Scotland.

Exactly one year ago, we were walking through Glasgow with Kevin Johnson, preparing to meet Robin Mark McDade, Viola McDade, Chris McKenzie, David Miller, Kirsten Miller and get to know the Mosaic Church crew.

We had no idea what God had in store for us, and we're so excited for the future that has been unfolding this past year.

We're still looking for a few more folks to join our team so we can deploy. If you're interested in learning more, please reach out!

Joshua Slabaugh Garber has incorporated a Celtic element every time he's led worship since returning stateside in 2022.

This Sunday at Trinity Mennonite Church, he shared a new composition set to the tune of "Sally Gardens." An excerpt:

"Brooding Spirit, move among us;
be our partner, be our friend.
When our mem'ry fails, remind us
whose we are, what we intend.

Labor with us, aid the birthing
of the new world yet to be,
free of servant, lord, and master,
free for love and unity."

First week of school is in the bag! When school ended last year, we didn't know if Asher would be returning to school in Phoenix or starting school in Scotland. The past four years have been anything but predictable, and yet through everything, Asher's rolled with it.

We're in the home stretch for reaching sustainable funding -- that our recurring support equals our anticipated living and ministry expenses. We're so grateful to everybody who has already pitched in.

School starts this week, and we're recognizing Alisha: equal parts teacher, pastor, and force of nature, she's a sight to behold in Trinity Mennonite Church's kids Sunday school classroom.

Serving in post-Soviet Lithuania and post-dictatorship Barcelona has helped shaped our ideas about building bridges with those whom we disagree. Glasgow will inevitably teach us so much more.

Joshua shares some of our gleanings with Anabaptist World.

An additional nod to Mennonite Central Committee’s Peaceful Practices curriculum!

Disagreement is inevitable: you just need two people and time. So the question is not whether you’ll find yourself in a disagreement, but how will you respond.

𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄: We fell for each other before knowing one of us was a lifelong pacifist and the other a National Guard soldier. What happened to make that last over 22 years (and counting)?

As we prepare to move to Glasgow, a city known for sectarianism and violence, we've been reflecting on what it will look like to be a peaceful presence. Joshua writes in Anabaptist World about the importance of listening and trying to love those you disagree with.
