Meet the Puritans

Meet the Puritans To introduce the theology and piety of the Puritans to a new generation so they may be filled with love for Christ and his Church.

The Meet the Puritans ministry is a partnership between Rev. Hyde and the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. The purpose of Meet the Puritans is to introduce the theology and piety of the seventeenth century English Puritans in particular and of sixteenth-eighteenth century Reformed orthodoxy in general by means of sharing original research, writing theological and devotional commentary upon the

writings of the 16th–18th centuries, and recommending helpful print, audio, and video materials for your study of the Puritans and Reformed theology. Our goals in doing this are instruction concerning “the unsearchable riches of Christ” (Eph. 3:8) found in the writings of the 16th–18th centuries so that a new generation would be filled with love for Christ and his historic church so that it might serve him in the world more effectively. The Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals is a coalition that seeks to encourage and equip the Church with relationships and direct access to thousands of churches and church leaders. The Alliance has served the church for decades including hosting pastor conferences, reformation societies, and producing audio, print, and online resources.

“Follow your heart.” We hear this time and again, the world’s mantra to find assurance in emotion and intuition. Yet this is hardly a consolation for the Christian who knows that the heart is ever-fickle and oft-misleading. When the weight of sin overwhelms, or when doubts arise, or when fears assail, what comfort is there to be had? Read more from Jacob Tanner...

Calvin once said that we listen to ourselves too much, and we talk to ourselves too little. Specifically, Calvin meant telling ourselves the truth of the Word of God. Many Puritans followed Calvin in this encouragement, including Thomas Ho**er

Ryan McGraw asks, "Is it possible to undervalue Christ’s sufferings by overemphasizing the cross?"

Short answer: no. But we shouldn't neglect the whole of His sufferings.

Satan is the great enemy of our souls. When he realizes that he cannot stop God’s saving a person, he does all that he can to trouble and vex that soul. Recognizing this, the Puritans spent a great portion of their sermon ministering to wounded souls in their congregation. Read more from Don Kistler

When Satan tries to vex our souls, Christ offers a precious balm.

How John Owen Prepared Sermons • Jeremy Walker

I once spent a cracking day at the Evangelical Library in London, attending a "Reading John Owen" conference. Those lectures (including Nigel Graham's exceptional popular introduction to the life of Owen) left me hungry to do more reading and re-reading of John Owen. I was reminded, by my own effo...
