Precious in the sight of the Lord are the death of His saints. Psalm 116:15

It is with heavy hearts that we share that Pastor DeGroot has learned today, through Cameron’s mother, that Cameron has fallen asleep in Jesus.

We mourn with the family and lament all the things that could have been for a man so young, but rejoice in knowing that our Lord united Himself to Cameron in the waters of Holy Baptism.

Pastor DeGroot had been in touch with Cameron regularly since leaving Philadelphia, and a bond formed. Our family weeps from afar, and we ask that you please remember Cameron’s mother, family and friends in your prayers.

God bless Cameron, baptized into Christ yesterday. "He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit. For without me you can do nothing. " John 15: 5

Hello one and all! I wanted to update the story that had been shared months ago. I'm pleased to tell all of you that on Saturday of last week Cameron Hames and I were able to reconnect and speak on the phone for two hours. Cameron, as you may remember, was a man that had been struggling with addiction for many years. He had been homeless for much of his adult life and had never entered a Christian church until he found us at Shepherd Of The City.

I am very pleased to tell you that Cameron, by the grace of God, is five months sober, and is living comfortably with other young men who share in the same struggle. I thank God for your prayers and for your kind words toward Cameron and I am so happy that he was able to be brought to the waters of baptism last October 30th and that the Lord has been faithful to him in all of his days. Please continue to keep Cameron in your prayers.

Due to the Facebook powers-that-be, requests to change this profile page title were denied. Plus, we cherish looking back on the wonderful things God has done through our time in Philly.

Since many of our supporters and dear friends in Christ have been tracking with us here, we would like to share an important update, with more to follow, likely on a new page:

Faith in Christ Lutheran Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico has extended a Divine Call to Adam earlier this month to be pastor of their church plant, St. Andrews, in southwest Albuquerque. After a visit and some prayerful deliberation, the call has been ACCEPTED! Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!

Just as in Philadelphia with Shepherd of the City, St. Andrews is partnering with the Office of National Mission. This means that Adam, Melissa and Knox will not be able to move there until a fundraising goal has been met. We covet your prayers in this endeavor, as the families at St. Andrews patiently await their new shepherd.

With the LWML convention actually IN Albuquerque next week, both Adam and Melissa will be in attendance and be sitting at the St. Andrew's booth, along with Pastor Eli Lietzau and seed family member, Al Arnold. We look forward to meeting with LWML members, pastors and friends (maybe some of you!) and talking about this wonderful mission in an under-served area of ABQ. Please come say hello if you're going!

Our LCMS missionary page has been updated as you will see attached to this post, and online support is easily accessible through it if you are so inclined. Please feel free to share this with others and any friends eager to support missionaries. If you would like to talk with us more about it, please feel free to contact us via Facebook, commenting below or privately.

We thank you for all your prayers, emails, phone calls and support with the Lord's ministry in Philadelphia, commending Shepherd's members to God's care, our transition time, and now, as we prepare and seek to do His will in Albuquerque.

We look forward to updating you as we go forward. Soli Deo Gloria--To God alone be the glory!

Dear friends.... I would like to notify you all of upcoming changes to this page. Soon this page will be completely devoted to the Missionary Work and endeavors of the LCMS Office of National Mission and her Missionary Reverend Adam DeGroot. Please be notified that this page will no longer be associated with updates from Philadelphia.

So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, describing the conversion of the Gentiles; and brought great joy to all the brothers. When they had come to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they declared all that God had done with them. Acts 15:3-4

Greetings one and all in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I pray that this letter finds you all well.

Paul and Barnabas were sent on their way by the Church in the same way that missionaries and pastors are sent out in our own day. They were sent with a purpose and with the great tool of the Gospel. They passed through certain areas, shared joys, preached and taught and caused great joy to all the brothers much as the called men of God do today. Similarly, missionaries and pastors often find themselves passing through a certain territory for a brief amount of time. And it is this that I wish to write to you about this month.

Three years ago the Lord God called Melissa, Knox and me to the mission field in Philadelphia to tend to the sheep of Northeast Philadelphia, Shepherd of the City Lutheran Church, Logos Lutheran Fellowship, St. John’s Lutheran Church (Springfield, Pa.). I was called to preach and teach and to give account of the great works of our loving God. For three years, we faithfully saw to the care of the souls that were given to us and yet there are times, just like in Acts 15, when God sends His men through places with His promises of faithfulness, His promises of protection and He prepares those men for new work within his church. Paul and Barnabas were protected as they faced the uncertainty of the early Christian Church and yet they were guided and girded by the great promises of God, and so are we.

I write this month’s newsletter with a heavy heart, with great sorrow and yet exceeding joy. My heart is heavy and sorrow is present because Melissa, Knox and I, like so many missionary families before us in various places in the world are no longer in the fields we were originally called to. As of March 19, 2017 we have moved from Philadelphia in order to await the Lord’s direction and calling into another field. As time permits and as your curiosities may arise, I am willing to discuss this matter with you personally but for the time being we continue to be missionaries awaiting another field of placement as we, exactly like Paul and Barnabas in all their circumstances, trust the promises of Almighty God. It is because of this, in the midst of entrusting 15 souls to the care Almighty God, in the midst of leaving a neighborhood, friends and families that we grew to love immensely, that we have to occasion for great joy! Paul faced many worldly uncertainties from the 15th chapter of Acts onward, but he was constantly cared for, provided for and protected by Almighty God. This is our certain hope, that as we await the Lord’s gracious provision of another placement into His harvest that we would be continually provided for.

The United States and her mission field, as you no doubt know by now, is the world’s third largest mission field and we are excited for and continue to wait with eagerness for another placement into the mission field in the United States. I thank all of you for your continued prayers and financial support. Our Synod and district mission leaders are praying about these mission opportunities and seeking God’s wisdom about which place to send us. Due to the sensitive nature of placing missionaries, it would not be appropriate to announce which places are under consideration. A decision will be made soon and we hope to able to announce the location in our next newsletter. Please pray the Holy Spirit would guide our mission leaders in this decision.

We are excited that we will be able to serve God’s mission. Sometimes, we find it difficult not knowing what God has in store for us, yet we are continually reminded that God is in control, He is the Lord of the Church and it is His direction that we heed. He is doing what is best for His mission work. His plan is far greater than we can imagine.

Thank you for your prayers and your partnership in God’s mission work. Thank you for your patience, your kind words, your notes, and your cards. God works through you to give us strength and patience. It is because of your partnership that we are able to proclaim the Gospel to the lost, the wayward and the erring in the United States of America. Thank you.

Almost every school day and police detail Oxford Circle and Castor Gardens as 6,000 Middle and High School students walk home. Pastor DeGroot talked with one of the officers 👮 today, and he said they are cracking down as delinquency, vandalism and violence are getting worse. Our Lord bless and keep these officers that they may protect all and safely stop any who would bring harm.

A blessed Monday to all. While most of us awoke from our beds warm and refreshed, this cardboard mat placed next to Shepherd was a soul's room last night. The person, however, was nowhere to be found. Thankfully he grabbed some food that we leave out from Trader Joe's donations and was hopefully nourished in some small way.

This is not unusual here. Two weeks ago it was someone else in the church stairwell.

Since Pastor DeGroot holds prayer offices almost every morning, this has afforded him the opportunity to find individuals resting near the church and to minister to them in whatever ways the Lord sees fit. Sometimes it's a simple conversation or a few hours rest and food inside the church. Sometimes it's bringing them to the waters of holy baptism. Most times they are never seen again. But we trust that through the Office of the Holy Ministry God is seeing His Word return to Him--not us--in efficacious ways that give these souls life and a true home in Jesus.
