Opportunity to Help Residents of Dawn's Place

Dawn’s Place has been at the forefront of providing direct services to women recovering from the trauma of s*x trafficking and exploitation. Their year-long, residential program combines intensive therapy with a proven program providing adult survivors with the opportunity to learn how to become self-supporting and live independently. We have long supported Dawn's Place financially, and we now have a more concrete way to help.

When new residents arrive, a room is furnished for them. These furnishings are theirs to keep when they leave for either transitional housing or as they begin to live independently. Below is a link to an Amazon Wish List set up just for PCCH to furnish a room for an incoming resident. When checking out, please use the shipping address that will populate for "Meaghan Patterson's Gift Registry Address".

Any questions, please reach out to Melissa Montgomery, [email protected] or 610-506-0898.

Please join us this Sunday for our next Day of Service.

TONIGHT: SOULS SHOT PORTRAIT PROJECT EXHIBITION OPENING RECEPTION, 7-9pm

Souls Shot Portrait Project to Receive Honor at Friday's Opening Reception in Widener Hall

Souls Shot Portrait Project will be officially designated as a Zone of Peace, an honor bestowed on the project by the Religious Leaders Council of Greater Philadelphia. The Council’s Call to People of Faith to Stop Violence aims to “make our homes and neighborhoods zones of peace free from fear, filled with respect, and marked by deeds of kindness.” The group will present a banner to Souls Shot Portrait Project during the Friday evening program (doors open at 7pm, program starts 7:30pm). The project was lauded for the “compassionate process that goes into each portrait: the careful selection of artists, the relationship that is created between the grieving family and the artist, the goal of creating an image that is both true to the life lost and relatable to others.”

NEXT WEEK: VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WITH URDC

URDC's annual volunteer week with the Interfaith Community Building Group (ICBG) runs from Monday, 7/24 through Thursday, 7/27. ICBG is an interdenominational collaboration of contractors between URDC members St. Vincent's and Mishkan Shalom synagogue. During that time, 10-15 members of ICBG (and other volunteers) will be repairing the homes of up to 7 low-income, senior homeowners. Individuals can volunteer for one or more days next week and not even for the full day, if necessary.

The day will start at 8 AM at either First United Methodist Church of Germantown or Second Baptist Church of Germantown and will end by 3 PM. There will be a number of skilled contractors working in tandem with volunteers, so there will be plenty of supervision on each site. In addition, a volunteer day sponsored by First United Methodist Church of Germantown (FUMCOG) is planned for Saturday, 8/12.

If you are interested, please reach out to Jeff Podraza with your availability, and phone number, and we will forward the information on to URDC; you'll be contacted with more details. Thank you!

Before we head into the slower summer months, the Social Witness Committee wants to THANK YOU for your support this year, and leave with you an important reminder!

First, PCCH’s Matthew 25 call to serve “the least of these'' continues to be answered by many of you, through your volunteerism and contributions!

• Our congregational Days of Service helped to provide food, health supplies, books, and clothing to our neighbors. In May, a group made home repairs and improvements for senior homeowners in Germantown, Mount Airy and West Oak Lane. You have also helped to increase awareness of the increasing toll of gun violence in our community, and improved the gardens at PCCH - providing food for community fridges in Northwest Philadelphia. Many congregants participated with enthusiasm and joy, and we hope to have MORE opportunities to serve in the very near future!
• You have generously donated cash, clothing, food, health supplies, backpacks, Thanksgiving turkeys and groceries, and Christmas gifts for those in need.

PLEASE remember that need does not take a summer holiday. Our mission partners “down the Avenue” continue to rely on our support throughout the year:

• Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry operates their Food Cupboard all year, and the need is more critical than ever now that Federal SNAP benefits have been reduced. When you are grocery shopping, remember to add a few non-perishable items to your cart and bring them to church on Sunday - we collect donations on the shelves inside the Reception Room.
• Face to Face always needs toiletry kits. Please consider donating individually packaged toothbrushes, full size bottles of 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, or toothpaste. They also welcome new washcloths.
• Stay tuned for our annual backpack and school supply drive later in the summer.

Marci Auld Glass is a friend of John’s who serves as pastor of Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco (www.calvarypresbyterian.org) . Marci and John are making a very friendly wager on the outcome of the NFC Championship Game. If the 49ers win, John will wear a 49ers hat during worship (and post pictures). In addition, and more importantly, he will make a donation to Safe House, a San Francisco organization that works to empower women who are experiencing housing instability and s*xual exploitation or trafficking. (Visit www.sfsafehouse.org to learn more.) If the Eagles win, Marci will wear an Eagles hat during worship and make a donation to Dawn’s Place, an organization long-supported by PCCH that offers a safe and caring residential setting for survivors of commercial s*xual exploitation (CSE) or s*x trafficking. (Visit www.ahomefordawn.org to learn more).
