On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, Pope Leo XIV has addressed a letter to the American people.

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all Americans on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This semiquincentennial marks that defining moment in the history of the United States of America, July 4, 1776, that gave enduring voice to the ideals of liberty, equality, the pursuit of happiness, justice and democratic self-government.
For two and a half centuries, generations of Americans have worked together to carry these principles forward — through sacrifice, service, innovation and civic participation. This anniversary stands as an invitation not only to celebrate the nation's remarkable journey, but also to reflect upon the responsibilities that the sons and daughters of this country bear to one another, and to the generations who will inherit the nation that is being shaped today.
Among the most cherished of these principles is religious freedom — the right of every person to worship according to conscience and to practice their faith openly, without coercion or fear. In marking this anniversary, it is important to recognize that freedom of religion has long been central to the American promise, protecting both individual dignity and the peaceful coexistence of a diverse people.
This same freedom has permitted the Catholic Church to take root and flourish within the United States, to the advantage not only of her own members, but of the entire nation. As faithful sons and daughters of the Church, Catholics are called to imbue every dimension of their existence with the charity of Christ (cf. 2 Cor 5:14), living out the Gospel in the circumstances of daily life. Such a way of living has given rise to the many benefits that the Church has provided over the years to the development of this nation. In particular, I bring to mind her service in areas of education, the preferential care of the poor, healthcare and basic social services, to name a few.
In the Encyclical Sapientiae Christianae, my predecessor Pope Leo XIII wrote that "no better citizen is there… than the Christian who is mindful of his duty" (no. 7). In fact, faith — far from standing in opposition to the responsibilities of citizenship — lends new vigor to the pursuit of justice, peace and the common good, bringing to perfection every natural gift bestowed by the Creator. Saint Paul himself encouraged the early Christians to pray for those in positions of authority in order to live a peaceful life in accord with the will of God (cf. 1 Tim 2:2). In this regard, it is in the faithful fulfilment of duty — to God and country — that Catholics are called to continue to serve the nation, as leaven for the growth of a civilization of love (cf. Mt 13:33).
Also among the principles that have guided the development of this country is the God-given dignity of every human life, each person being endowed with an inherent worth that calls for reverence, protection and care. In this spirit, a full understanding of this dignity leads to recognizing the importance of safeguarding human life from its beginning at conception until natural death, and of building a society in which the vulnerable, the suffering and the forgotten are always met with compassion, solidarity and love.
Defending human life also includes welcoming, protecting and assisting immigrants, whose hopes, sacrifices and contribution have formed part of the history of this country from its very beginning. In every generation, those who have arrived seeking freedom, opportunity and a place to belong have helped to shape the nation's character. To receive them with compassion and generosity is not only an act of charity, but also a recognition of the dignity that belongs to every human person.
In my recent Encyclical Letter, Magnifica Humanitas, I wrote about working together for the common good. "Building a world in which everyone can flourish requires shared responsibility and courage. No one can single-handedly bear the weight of the challenges the world is facing" (no. 13). We need one another, and we need to work together in unity to confront the challenges that the world is facing today.
May this milestone renew the shared commitment to the promise of freedom, justice, opportunity and democracy. May Americans honor the courage and vision of those who came before them by strengthening their communities, respecting their differences and working together toward a more perfect union.
Congratulations on this extraordinary national anniversary. May the spirit of 1776 continue to inspire hope and unity as the United States of America moves into the future. In assuring all of you of my prayers in your renewed efforts to strengthen the nation in the principles that guided its Founding Fathers, I entrust you to the intercession of the Immaculate Conception, patroness of this country, that she will continue to watch over America and protect all who dwell therein.

HOW TO PRAY THE CHAPLET & LITANY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
MEANING, METHOD AND CATHOLIC TRADITION
“The Holy Spirit is not merely a force, He is God Himself actively guiding, sanctifying and transforming the Church.”

Many Catholics are familiar with prayers directed to:
* Jesus Christ
* the Blessed Virgin Mary
* and the saints
Yet surprisingly, many Catholics know very little about direct devotions to the Holy Spirit.

Because of this, many believers are unaware that the Church also has:
* prayers of invocation to the Holy Spirit
* litanies dedicated to the Holy Spirit
* and even devotional chaplets centered on the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Some Catholics hear about these devotions and immediately wonder:
* Is there really a Chaplet of the Holy Spirit?
* Is the Litany of the Holy Spirit approved by the Church?
* How exactly are they prayed?
* Why do Catholics pray these devotions?
The truth is that devotion to the Holy Spirit is deeply rooted within Catholic spirituality.

The Holy Spirit:
* sanctifies the Church
* strengthens believers
* grants spiritual gifts
* guides discernment
* and leads souls toward holiness

Every authentic Christian life depends on the Holy Spirit.

1. WHY DO CATHOLICS PRAY TO THE HOLY SPIRIT?
The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Holy Trinity:
* Father
* Son
* and Holy Spirit
Catholics therefore worship and pray to the Holy Spirit because He is truly God.

The Holy Spirit is not merely:
* an energy
* a symbol
* or an emotion
He is Divine Personhood active within the Church and the believer.

Catholics especially invoke the Holy Spirit for:
* wisdom
* discernment
* holiness
* purity
* guidance
* strength
* and spiritual renewal
Without the Holy Spirit, the Christian life becomes spiritually powerless.

The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church.

2. WHAT IS THE CHAPLET OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?
The Chaplet of the Holy Spirit is a devotional prayer centered mainly on:
* the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

These gifts are:
* Wisdom
* Understanding
* Counsel
* Fortitude
* Knowledge
* Piety
* Fear of the Lord
The chaplet is prayed to ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen these gifts within the soul.

Though different versions exist, the devotion is commonly structured around seven sections corresponding to the Seven Gifts.

The chaplet is especially prayed for:
* spiritual growth
* discernment
* purity
* guidance
* and deeper union with God

The Holy Spirit does not merely give gifts…
He transforms lives.

3. HOW IS THE CHAPLET OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PRAYED?
The exact format may vary slightly depending on devotional tradition, but a common structure includes:

* Opening Sign of the Cross
* An invocation to the Holy Spirit
* Acts of adoration and prayer

Then each section focuses on one Gift of the Holy Spirit.

For each gift, Catholics may pray:
* one Our Father
* followed by several Hail Marys
* while meditating on the particular gift

Example:
* Wisdom
* Understanding
* Counsel
* and so forth

The chaplet usually concludes with:
* a closing prayer
* invocation to the Holy Spirit
* and the Sign of the Cross
The goal of the chaplet is not mechanical repetition but openness to the transforming action of the Holy Spirit.

4. WHAT IS THE LITANY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?
The Litany of the Holy Spirit is a devotional prayer of invocation in which the faithful call upon the Holy Spirit under different sacred titles.

It is prayed in a response format similar to many traditional Catholic litanies.

The prayer invokes the Holy Spirit as:
* Spirit of Wisdom
* Spirit of Understanding
* Spirit of Counsel
* Spirit of Fortitude
* Spirit of Knowledge
* Spirit of Piety
* Spirit of Holy Fear
* Spirit of Love
* Spirit of Truth
and many other titles.

After each invocation, the faithful usually respond:
“Have mercy on us”
or
“Come to us”
depending on the version used.

The Litany of the Holy Spirit is deeply meditative and spiritually powerful.

5. HOW IS THE LITANY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PRAYED?
The litany is usually prayed:
* slowly
* prayerfully
* and reflectively

One person may lead the invocations while others respond.
It is commonly prayed:
* before Pentecost
* during retreats
* before discernment
* before important decisions
* and during periods of spiritual renewal

The repetitive structure helps the soul meditate deeply on:
* the presence of God
* the gifts of the Spirit
* and dependence on divine grace

Catholic litanies are designed not merely for recitation…
but for contemplation.

6. ARE THESE DEVOTIONS OFFICIALLY CATHOLIC?
Yes.
Devotions to the Holy Spirit are fully rooted within Catholic spirituality and tradition.

The Church has long encouraged prayers invoking the Holy Spirit because:
* the Holy Spirit sanctifies believers
* strengthens the Church
* and guides souls toward truth
While different devotional formats may exist regionally, the spirituality behind them remains deeply Catholic and orthodox.

The Church has always recognized the necessity of invoking the Holy Spirit in Christian life.

Every sacrament depends on the action of the Holy Spirit.

7. WHY ARE THESE DEVOTIONS IMPORTANT TODAY?
Modern life often fills people with:
* confusion
* anxiety
* spiritual weakness
* temptation
* and distraction

The Holy Spirit gives believers:
* clarity
* wisdom
* courag
* holiness
* and peace

Many Catholics seek guidance from everywhere except the Holy Spirit Himself.

Yet Sacred Scripture repeatedly shows that:
* the Apostles
* the saints
* and the early Church

depended completely on the Holy Spirit.

Without the Holy Spirit, Christian life becomes merely external religion.

The Holy Spirit transforms religion into living relationship with God.

8. THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Seven Gifts traditionally associated with the Holy Spirit are:
* Wisdom
* Understanding
* Counsel
* Fortitude
* Knowledge
* Piety
* Fear of the Lord

These gifts help believers:
* know God more deeply
* resist sin
* discern rightly
* and grow in holiness

The Chaplet of the Holy Spirit especially centers on praying for these gifts to flourish within the soul.

The Holy Spirit equips believers not merely to survive spiritually, but to become holy.

IN SUMMARY: CALLING UPON THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Chaplet and Litany of the Holy Spirit are beautiful Catholic devotions that help believers:
* seek God’s guidance
* grow spiritually
* and open themselves to the action of the Holy Spirit

These prayers remind Catholics that the Christian life cannot be lived by human strength alone.

The Holy Spirit:
* teaches
* strengthens
* sanctifies
* and transforms the soul.

Today, reflect:
Do I truly invite the Holy Spirit into my daily life, or do I try to live spiritually by my own strength?

“Where the Holy Spirit is welcomed, hearts begin to change.”
