“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3‬:‭9‬

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Scripture:
2 Peter 3:8 “But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.” (NASB)

Observation: I took my seat on my favorite pew that morning. Sharon and I had been wanting a child for the past two years. We had already been married about four years, so we wanted to start a family. But nothing was happening. I asked the Lord that morning, if we were going to have children of our own or would we be adopting. We both had talked and we’re open to both possibilities. I sensed in my heart that the Lord promised us we would have our own children.

Fast forward almost 8 years later, and we welcomed our first child, Michelle. And eight years after that, we welcomed our second child, Rachel. Michelle now is 26, married, and has our first granddaughter. Rachel just turned 19 the other day.

When I think back to the 16 years of waiting for the Lord to fulfill his promise to us, today, it seems like just a few minutes. Back then, of course, it seemed like an eternity. But this one thing I have learned in that experience, that the Lord is not slack in fulfilling his promise. Do you have a promise that the Lord has made you? Wait for it, he will fulfill it. Even if it’s not in your lifetime, it will come to pass. Trust Him!

Scripture:
Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” (NASB)

Observation: Some of you remember that I posted the other day about my father-in-law, and how good of a man he was. In that post I had made a comment of how I strive to be more like him in many of the attributes that he shown that Christ like. I think about him often, and even after that post the other day, my wife and I sat and reminisced about all the good things we remember about John.

As much as I want to show those attributes of Christ, I have learned in almost almost 40 years of serving the Lord that there is almost nothing I can do myself that would allow me to achieve that goal. You see, my nature is that of Adam and of sin. No matter how hard I try, I cannot meet God’s standards. Not for lack of trying, or even desire, but because by nature, I cannot do them. If I could… Why would there be a need for a sacrifice?

It is in this tone and thought that the aforementioned scripture was spoken. If we will accept Christ, and allow him to work in our lives each and every day, we will begin to show his attributes, and show them in a way that pleases him, more and more every day. Eventually, if we abide in Christ, the vine, we will bear fruit, fruit that is pleasing to him.

So stop striving… rest and abide.

Scripture:
Titus 2:7-8 "…in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us." (NASB)

Observation: I only wish I could be half the man my father-in-law was. He was one of the kindest, gentlest, and faithful men I have ever met. He treated everyone with dignity, kindness, and with a personal respect that even to this day, I feel a warm connection to him. I feel that connection because that’s the way he treated me.

I always knew where John was at 7 AM in the morning. And I know how he got there. He had one of those old alarms that the number would drop as each minute passed. He would set the alarm for very early in the morning. But the clock was so old that the alarm bell didn’t work… All you heard was a quiet click. And that was enough to wake him up. After getting ready for the morning, he would be at the kitchen table doing his devotion and reading his Bible. I knew exactly where John was every single morning at 7 AM… Doing his devotion and reading his Bible.

I have often felt the sting of failure, as I have compared myself to that man over the years. But one thing that I have learned, is that God‘s grace is not only for our failures (sin) in our lives, but is there for our growth. Let’s lean on God’s grace and mercy and take the opportunity to be faithful in striving to be more like Christ. Let us continue to improve through the spirit of God to show his attributes, his faithfulness, and his love to others.

Scripture:
Romans 5:9 “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.” (NASB)

Observation:
It’s something we don’t like to talk about, but in God’s Word (especially the Old Testament) we see God’s wrath. It was and is a terrible thing, but the act of one man changed the world and eternity forever. His precious blood was poured out for ALL. His willingness, despite the pain and suffering, to give up His life for us was the greatest act of love.

Have we ever spent some time at the foot of that cross realizing that the debt of our sin was paid in full? Now, we have a decision to make—do we accept Him in full or do we make some excuse and choose to walk away from that act of love? Because there was a Resurrection Day three days after the cross, we can be saved from the wrath of God through Jesus Christ.

Scripture:
Jeremiah 23:24 “’Can a man hide himself in hiding places So I do not see him?’ declares the Lord. ‘Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?’ declares the Lord.” (NASB)

Observation:
A good finish carpenter can hide a screw so no one knows it’s there. For years I hid my anger from most people. Only those close enough (those I was supposed to love) could see the anger. No matter how well I hid it from the outside world, God knew, my family knew, and I knew. In today's scripture the Lord asks a simple question, "Where can a man hide himself from God?" The answer is nowhere! Many times, we do things we think no one will ever notice.

To be honest, some of those things are sin. Falling short of what we know is right, what we know will honor God. We think that we can hide it. The reality is that God sees all and knows all. If we think we are fooling Him, we are sadly mistaken. We have to stop hiding our sin and confess it before Him. Think about it, where can we run where He doesn't see us and know? Brother, it's time to come clean.
