1776 Stout Family Bible

1776 Stout Family Bible Help to preserve the Stout Family Bible! Contact us: [email protected] It took three years to produce. Very few copies of this bible exist today.

Christoph Saur, 1693-1758, printed the first European language Bible in America in Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1743. The 1776 edition of the Saur Bible was printed By Christoph Saur II . This was in the first state of printing, before remaining copies of the Bible were confiscated by American authorities during the Revolutionary War. Based on research, this book appears to have been printed and st

itched together before the Battle of Germantown, October 1777. After that event, remaining copies of the Bible were seized by American authorities because of Saur’s refusal to take the loyalty oath to the new nation. A “Blessings List” is planned to record names of those contributing $25.00 or more. This list is to be retained with the historic Saur Bible recognizing donors for preserving local history.

Gordon and Lois Stout visited Perkasie this morning. Gordon is a descendent of Jacob Stout, the first settler in Perkasie, Pennsylvania. The Stout's were returning to their home in Texas after a trip to New England. We showed them our historic venues as well as the Stout Land deed and C. Saur Bible on display in Perkasie Borough Hall. We thank them for their interest, support and donation to Perkasie Historical Society and wish them a safe return home.

This group of photos was taken in the Germantown Academy vault. These artifacts date back to the founding of the school in 1759 before the revolutionary war. Very few have gotten to experience this collection. Can anyone identify the alumni from class pictures? Enjoy.
