Since trees act a carbon sink & planting them provides employment, it makes sense to plant in rural areas where farming isn’t working.

We’re Headed To Vegas Baby!

The next Climate Reality Leadership Corps training will take place in what may be the fastest warming city in the US – Las Vegas, Nevada. We’ll be training a new cohort of Climate Reality Leaders in the desert city from March 8-10 – if you know anyone who might like to attend, share the application with them now!

Las Vegas warmed more than 5.7 degrees Fahrenheit between 1970 and 2018. Las Vegas is feeling the heat, but is also seeing the effects of the climate crisis in myriad other ways from dwindling water sources, wildfire risk, and pest infestations.

It’s time to start talking in Las Vegas.

Ever hear the expression, Nero fiddled while Rome burned? There is only one global crisis that is inexorably, changing our climate for the worse. Most churches, politicians, local governments are not reacting to this threat to you.

The hero in this predicament can be YOU. You can take many small ACTIONS every week that add up to ginormous movements by many heroes around the world. 1) Will you call your local politicians and TV meteorologists to simply say, “I want to hear more about the climate crisis.” 2) Eat less beef. 3) Drive less. Carpool or take a bus or light rail.

You can be a local hero by joining other climate heroes around the world! Do eet! 😎

Enough talk, let's get out there and accomplish some creation care!

“You Think You Can Change the Climate?”
I was not prepared when an acquaintance at a Super Bowl party asked this question in response to my sharing that I am working on the climate crisis. It seemed a long time before my response, “yes I do.” That got me thinking.
Being a climate activist is a challenge. Although science interests me, debating does not. I feel God’s presence in my life, but not the impulse to proselytize. Good public speakers inspire me, but the thought of presenting a formal paper makes my knees knock. And I definitely do not relate the climate crisis and creation care to politics or tribal orientation. Being a citizen who leads by example is my style. That doesn’t engender followers, but perhaps that technique will stimulate action. To that end, I offer the following list of actions the Green Team and I have taken that do indeed, change the climate:
- We have begun a program to limit single use plastic at church and home.
- The team has planted a demonstration garden with elementary students.
- We have recycled plastic and cans from the Salt River Recreation Area.
- Our preschool has planted a veggie garden.
- Recycling plastic, aluminum, glass and corrugated directly helps.
- We collect green waste and dig it into gardens to trap carbon.
- We personally finance as well as plant trees to increase O2 (oxygen.)
- Repurposing unwanted household items reduces mfg. new items.
- We have divested our retirement accounts away from fossil fuels.
- Our family car is a hybrid with terrific mileage with batteries/gasoline.
- When forced to fly we buy carbon offsets (AZ Interfaith Power & Light.)
- Added insulation causes our home air conditioner to run less.
- Our community garden helps avoid trucking food into the stores.
- We installed a high efficiency heat pump at home & church.
- We switched lighting at home & church to reduce power needs.

These are a few activities that have proven to improve our environment, changing the climate. The time for action is now. Can you help?

I still love you, but you’re making it very difficult…
This may be the sentiment that God has in response to our treatment of His gift of the earth and everything living upon it. He is definitely calling us in the night. “I will go Lord, if you lead me,” the hymn offers. The General Board of Church and Society is offering leadership in the publication of Social Principles(1), in part, a response to the climate crisis.
“God has granted us stewardship of creation.”(p22) “…developments have led to regional defoliation, dramatic extinction of species, massive human suffering, overpopulation, and misuse and overconsumption of natural and nonrenewable resources…”
“The whole earth is God’s good creation and as such has inherent value. We are aware that the current utilization of energy sources threatens this creation at it’s very foundation.” “We encourage persons to limit CO2 emissions toward the goal of one tonne per person annually.”(p23) Currently some are responsible for emitting 10 times that amount. “We strongly advocate for the priority of the development of renewable energies.” This is a much easier lift now that renewables are cheaper than fossil fuels.
“Science and theology are complementary rather than mutually incompatible.”(p25) We therefore encourage dialogue between the scientific and theological communities and seek the kind of participation that will enable humanity to sustain life on earth and, by God’s grace, increase the quality of our common lives together.”

Still a bit fuzzy how you can help protect God’s gift today? Slow down on eating beef; make a game of how long you can leave the car at home; plant an edible landscape; recycle especially plastic and aluminum; join EarthKeepers (2); buy local produce/products, but most importantly, talk about the climate crisis with others. Share ideas. God still loves you but his patience is wearing thin.

A SINCERE THANK-YOU.
As a New Year takes it’s place on the calendar the Green Team wanted to give thanks for the many, many good climate deeds you performed throughout this year. A lot of your efforts may fall into the category of that John Wooden quote (paraphrased), “The true test of a person’s character is what they do when no one is watching.”
We ARE making a difference in the effort to protect God’s gift, the Earth and everything that lives on it. And more and more people ARE watching what you do and are joining in the effort. 2019 will present new challenges and new opportunities, so let's work as a team and take advantage of both.
Let's stay in touch . See you out there!
