Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
{Matthew 18:3-4}
Wanting to be the first, the best, and the brightest is nothing new. It goes back to at least Esau and Jacob. Even among the disciples, this was a point of contention.
In God’s kingdom, however, the status quo is entirely different. Those who the world deems important will not even be able to enter the kingdom of heaven, unless they learn to humble themselves and be able to adopt a faith as sincere and simple as that of a little child. Jesus tells the disciples to become like a child (again). This must have been quite shocking, because children were not considered to be role models in those times. Children were seen as unimportant in societal roles. They didn’t have a say in any way or form. The teachers of the scriptures and the law often emphasized the importance of knowledge and the adherence to the rules and regulations. Here, Jesus seems to say something else matters much more. The Greek philosophers and Romans despised humility as weak and undignified, and Jews were known to focus on their morals.
But Jesus wants His followers to be humble first and foremost, because He Himself is the ultimate example of humility. He wants them to be different from those around them. Although He was the King of kings, the Prince of peace, Jesus took on the lowly appearance of a man, the Son of an ordinary carpenter in order to save all of humanity. And the plan He enacts in order to reconcile Himself with mankind, is one that puts Jesus in the role of a Servant, the One who sacrifices everything to make us whole.
That’s the example the Lord sets for us. Our faith needs to be born out of love, the desire to serve others the same way Jesus served us. If we care for the small and overlooked people, if we love them, and consider them to be important, like our Savior does, then whatever we do, we do for Jesus Himself. And He will honor us for serving others with love in the kingdom of heaven.
